Stridor as initial clinical presentation of tracheal chondroma.

Chondromas are benign cartilaginous tumours that are uncommon in the head and neck region. Only few cases of chondroma have been reported in the trachea. We present a 70-year-old patient who presented clinically with severe dyspnoea requiring urgent tracheotomy. An oval, expansive, well-delineated tracheal tumour was evident on magnetic resonance imaging. The mass was removed surgically in its entirety, preserving tracheal rings, and the histopathological diagnosis was chondroma. The patient was decannulated after 2 months, and was followed for 3 years. Urgent tracheotomy is an unusual initial…

Lumbar spinal chondroma presenting with radiculopathy: case report.

Chondroma is a very unusual cartilagenous neoplasm of the spine. Here we are present a case of spinal chondroma with radiculopathy. A 54-year-old female patient consulted with progressive low back pain and left femoral numbness. Lumbar spinal Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging studies showed an extradural mass lesion in the left L2 body. Computerized tomography (CT) did not reveal any osteolytic lesion of the bone. The mass lesion was excised totally by left partial hemilaminectomy and the intradural compartment was also checked. The histopathology of the lesion was confirmed as chondroma. Preope…

Spinal chondroma of the lumbar tract: case report.

BACKGROUND: Cartilage-forming tumors are benign cartilaginous tumors that rarely affect the spinal canal: they account for 2% of all spinal tumors and 2.6% of all benign bone tumors. Pathologically, they may be classified as chondromas, osteochondromas, chondroblastomas, and chondromyxoid fibromas. This oncotype may remain asymptomatic (it is confined within the vertebral structure) or may present as a hard paravertebral swelling (it invades the paravertebral structures) or more rarely, with a slowly-developing neurologic syndrome (it extends into the vertebral canal). METHODS: Thirty-one cas…

A lumbar chondroma originating from the intervertebral disc.

BACKGROUND: Chondromas, benign cartilaginous primary bone tumors, seldom occur in the spine. Most spinal chondromas arise from the cartilaginous parts of the vertebra. Chondromas originating from the intervertebral disc are extraordinarily rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 65-year-old female experienced recurrence of low back pain and left-sided lumbar radiculopathy after microdiscectomy and microdecompression. A mass continuous with the intervertebral disc was found to be compressing the left L3 nerve root and was resected. Histologic examination revealed a benign chondroma. CONCLUSION: Chondromas …

Para-articular extraskeletal chondroma mimicking first metatarsophalangeal synovitis.

Extraskeletal chondroma is a rare benign tumor with symptoms that could mimic other common musculoskeletal pathological entities. We present a rare case of an extraskeletal para-articular chondroma of the first metatarsophalangeal joint which was initially misinterpreted as joint synovitis, based on magnetic resonance imaging findings. Histology revealed benign chondroma of the foot, which was finally treated with radical surgical excision. More than 2 years postoperatively, no recurrence of the tumor has been encountered.

Characteristic CT and MRI findings of intracranial chondroma.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial chondromas are rare benign tumors. To date, few data are available on their neuroradiological features. PURPOSE: To describe a series of patients with intracranial chondroma and to analyze and discuss the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features that may distinguish chondromas from other intracranial neoplasms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed clinical and medical imaging data of six patients who had pathologically confirmed intracranial chondromas in our two institutions between July 2006 and September 2011. Both CT and…

Chondroma located in cerebral parenchyma without meningeal attachment.

Intracranial chondromas are rare benign tumors, which usually originate from skull base synchondrosis. In rarer cases, intracranial chondromas originate from the cerebral parenchyma without meningeal attachment, which is defined as intracerebral chondroma. In this paper, an 18-year-old male patient with intracerebral chondroma is presented. There are only 5 cases of intracerebral chondromas without meningeal attachment published in the literature. According to the clinical data, the intracerebral chondromas are hard hyaline cartilage, irregular lobulated grayish-white mass macroscopically and …

Extraskeletal Chondroma in the Middle Ear: A Case Report.

Extraskeletal chondroma, also known as soft tissue chondroma, is a benign cartilaginous tumor most commonly found in the hands and feet. The occurrence of extraskeletal chondroma in the external auditory canal is extremely rare. We report the first case of extraskeletal chondroma arising in the left middle ear. A 68-year-old female was referred to our department with a diagnosis of a left external - middle ear tumor accompanied by left-sided hearing loss. Otoscopic examination revealed a mass contacting the posterior surface of the anterosuperior quadrant of the tympanic membrane, protruding o…

Falx chondroma with hyperostosis of the scull: a case report.

INTRODUCION: Intracranial chondroma is a very rare, slow growing, benign cartilaginous tumor that arises usually from the base of the scull. Chondroma located at the falx is extremely rare. According to our best knowledge 15 cases of falx chondromas have been reported in the literature. CASE OUTLINE: This is the first case report of falx chondroma located in the parietal area associated with hyperostosis. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a 3x4x4 cm solid, calcified, ring-shaped, well-defined tumor at the posterior falx. The patient underwent surgery and complete resection was p…

[Malignant transformation of multiple chondroma. Apropos of a case].

Malignant transformation of multiple chondromas observed in Ollier's disease is a well known possibility. In the clinical case of a 52 year old woman reported here, the sarcomatous transformation of two endochondromatous foci occurred successively in less than one year. One was located in the calcaneus, the other within the proximal metaphysis of the ipsilateral fibula. This case is worth reporting for two reasons: the successive occurrence of these sarcomatous lesions led to a amputation below the knee, later completed by an extended radical resection of the fibula. This combination allowed t…

Osteoma or chondroma of the tongue; a clinical and postmortem study.

The occurrence of an osteoma or chondroma in the soft tissues of the oral cavity is rather uncommon. This anomaly occurs mainly on the tongue. Less than 60 cases have been published in the literature. In the first part of this treatise, 2 other patients are described, a 61-year-old female with a chondroma on the dorsum of the tongue and a 31-year-old female with an osteoma in the foramen caecum area. In the second part, the result of a post mortem study of 130 adult human tongues is reported. Not a single case of bone or cartilage formation was encountered in the cadaver tongues. The possible …

Laryngeal chondromas: Current knowledge and future directions.

OBJECTIVE: Cartilaginous tumors of the larynx are rare, representing less than 1% of all laryngeal tumors. Chondromas are benign mesenchymal tumors characterized by a slow-paced growth, primarily originated in the cricoid cartilage, followed by the thyroid, arytenoid, and epiglottic cartilages. This scoping review aims to understand the extent of evidence on the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, morbidity, and recurrence of the laryngeal chondroma (LC). DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Elsevier), Web of Science (Clarivate), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Systema…

[A case of intracranial chondroma presenting with pontine hemorrhage].

A rare case of parasellar chondroma accompanied by pontine hemorrhage is described. A review is made of the previously reported 6 cases of intracranial chondromas complicated with hemorrhage. A 21 year-old woman was admitted to our clinic because of consciousness deterioration progressing to coma within a day, and right hemiparesis. CT scan showed a contrast-enhanced mass in the parasellar region and a hematoma in the brain-stem, which was clearly demonstrated by MRI to be abutted on the dorsal part of the tumor mass. The tumor was removed through frontotemporal craniotomy and confirmed histol…

[Cranial vault chondroma: a case report and literature review].

Intracranial chondromas are unusual tumors, which most commonly arise from cartilage rets in the synchondrosis at the base of the skull. They are most likely found in the sellar and parasellar regions, usually located extradurally. In rare instances, these tumors originate from the dura mater of the convexity. In these cases their neuroradiological features may mimic other intracranial tumors. We present the case of a 50-year-old male presenting a large parasagittal tumor originating in the frontal convexity. MRI-scans revealed a cavitated tumor strongly enhanced after gadolinium infusion mimi…

[Carpal scaphoid chondroma complicated by fracture: a case report].

The carpal scaphoid is an uncommon localization for chondroma. Ten cases have been reported in the literature. We report a new case of right carpal scaphoid chondroma complicated by fracture in a 30 year-old man. The diagnosis was strongly suggested by the computed tomography scan and confirmed at pathology examination of the operative specimen. Treatment consisted in tumor enucleation and a cortico-cancellous graft to fill the gap followed by plaster case immobilization. Clinical and radiological outcome was favorable.
