OBJECTIVE: We systematically reviewed the evidence of an association between male circumcision and penile cancer.
METHODS: Databases were searched using keywords and text terms for the epidemiology of penile cancer. Random effects meta-analyses were used to calculate summary odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI).
RESULTS: We identified eight papers which evaluated the association of circumcision with penile cancer, of which seven were case-control studies. There was a strong protective effect of childhood/adolescent circumcision on invasive penile cancer (OR = 0.33; 95% CI 0.13

After early ending of controlled randomized studies in three African countries, where it has been shown that male circumcision diminishes the risk of their HIV infection even by 60%, campaigns recommending such procedures were undertaken in many countries. However circumcision does not provide to males absolute protection against HIV and it is necessary to apply other strategies diminishing the risk of infection, like delaying sexual initiation, reducing the number of sexual partners and consistent and proper use of condoms. It has not been unequivocally clarified so far how male circumcision

BACKGROUND: Male circumcision significantly reduced the incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among men in three clinical trials. We assessed the efficacy of male circumcision for the prevention of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) and human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and syphilis in HIV-negative adolescent boys and men.
METHODS: We enrolled 5534 HIV-negative, uncircumcised male subjects between the ages of 15 and 49 years in two trials of male circumcision for the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Of these subjects, 3393 (61.3%) were HSV-

Public health initiatives in Zambia encourage the uptake of early infant male circumcision (EIMC) as an HIV prevention strategy. This study assessed EIMC parental decision-making during perinatal care in Lusaka, Zambia, focusing on the influence of sociodemographic factors, family, and friends. A longitudinal pilot perinatal intervention, Like Father Like Son (LFLS), was implemented among 300 couples attending antenatal clinics in four urban community health centers. Participants were assessed postpartum regarding subsequent EIMC decisions. Partners, religion, and marital status were associate

Even though circumcision is low-risk, complications may occur, necessitating careful management. Here, we describe a 5-month-and-28-day-old infant who developed necrotizing fasciitis following Plastibell circumcision. This report emphasizes that clinicians should use standard equipment and appropriate-sized rings to prevent these unusual complications following circumcision.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The authors review three common clinical controversies encountered by primary care providers of adolescent males: management of varicoceles, the role of circumcision in the acquisition and transmission of sexually transmitted infections, and the value of teaching testicular self-examination.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent findings in adolescent varicoceles have advanced knowledge regarding the cause of varicoceles, the mechanism by which they may lead to infertility, new screening methods, and optimal surgical management. Accumulating evidence shows circumcision to be protective a

BACKGROUND: While female involvement in voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) has been studied among adults, little is known about the influence of adolescent females on their male counterparts. This study explored adolescent females' involvement in VMMC decision making and the postoperative wound healing process in South Africa, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.
METHODS: Across 3 countries, 12 focus group discussions were conducted with a total of 90 adolescent females (aged 16-19 years). Individual in-depth interviews were conducted 6-10 weeks post-VMMC with 92 adolescent males (aged 10-19 years

BACKGROUND: Male circumcision has health benefits and cultural significance in South Africa and elsewhere. We sought to understand perceptions about male circumcision among participants enrolled in a preventive human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vaccine efficacy trial in South Africa.
METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study with 28 consenting people aged 18-35 years old who self-reported that they were not living with HIV and who were participating in the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) 702 vaccine efficacy trial in Soweto. Using a semi-structured guide, we facilitated four focus group di

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Evidence of the protective effect of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) against HIV is well established. However, evidence of the protective effect of VMMC against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has been inconsistent or scarce across different populations and settings. This review summarizes the current evidence on the effect of VMMC for HIV prevention on acquisition and transmission of other STIs in heterosexual men, women, and men who have sex with men (MSM).
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent findings continue to strongly support the protective effect of male

South Africa promotes male circumcision (MC) as an HIV prevention method and implemented a national plan to scale-up MC in the country from 2012 to 2016. Literature has suggested that female risk compensatory behaviours (RCBs) are occurring in countries where these programmes have been implemented. Behaviours such as decreased condom use, concurrent sexual partners and sexual activity during the circumcision wound-healing period have the potential to jeopardise the campaigns' objectives. Literature has shown that directly providing women with MC information results in correct knowledge however

BACKGROUND: Male circumcision reduces men's risk of acquiring HIV and some sexually transmitted infections from heterosexual exposure, and is essential for HIV prevention in sub-Saharan Africa. Studies have also investigated associations between male circumcision and risk of acquisition of HIV and sexually transmitted infections in women. We aimed to review all evidence on associations between male circumcision and women's health outcomes to benefit women's health programmes.
METHODS: In this systematic review we searched for peer-reviewed and grey literature publications reporting associatio

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the principal cause of invasive cervical cancer. There is some evidence that male circumcision (MC) may protect against HPV infection and related disease in both men and women. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature to assess the association between MC and genital HPV infection indicators including genital warts.
METHODS: A systematic search of Medline was conducted to identify all relevant studies from February 1971 to August 2010. Effect estimates were included in random effects models.
RESULTS: A t

Traditional male circumcision is still widely practised by the Xhosa population throughout South Africa. Male circumcision is carried out mainly during summer and winter seasons. This is a retrospective record review of the male circumcision-related fatalities at Mthatha General Hospital during 2005 and 2006. The purpose of this study is to highlight the problem of circumcision-related deaths in the Mthatha area of South Africa. Twenty-five deaths related to traditional circumcisions were recorded over the period. The common causes of deaths were septicaemia (9 patients; 36%), pneumonia (5; 20

The majority of those infected with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to antiretroviral therapy, which is known to prolong the lives of HIV-positive persons in industrialized countries. Although the availability of antiretroviral therapy for those infected with HIV has increased worldwide, the infection rate out surpasses those started on such treatment. Without an AIDS vaccine or curative treatment, and given the difficulty in getting persons at risk to adopt healthy sexual behaviors, alternative approaches to decrease the spread of HIV infection are urgently needed. Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) is a priority human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) preventive intervention. Challenges in funding national VMMC programmes mandate us to adopt new methods to provide circumcisions in a primary care setting. This study aims to test the practicality of instrument-assisted circumcision in primary care in pre-school-age boys. The study setting was one primary care centre in Western Cape, South Africa. The methodology adopted is prospective case series of minimally invasive voluntary circumcision using the Unicirc instrument in boys less than 6 years of age.

BACKGROUND: Complications after male circumcision are numerous and may be presented as an adhesion between the glans penis and the preputial remnants, these adhesions may acquire different forms and troublesome the affected children.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 95 consecutive children of presumed glanular-preputial adhesions referred for correction of circumcision. They were assessed and classified as having either an early preputial adhesion or a well-formed skin bridge into 2 groups; group (A) who have a simple adhesion that was resolved through a conservative pre

Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) is an effective strategy for HIV prevention in areas with high prevalence of, and risk for, HIV. More than 361,000 male neonates are born each year in Zambia, many of whom could be eligible for Early-Infant Medical Circumcision (EIMC). Building on successful implementation strategies utilized in our Spear & Shield program, this pilot study, "Like Father, Like Son" (LFLS), evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of offering combined EIMC and VMMC services and couple-level behavioral interventions. A total of N = 702 pregnant women and their male pa
