PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to review the literature regarding the evolution of current thoughts on management of mandibular condylar fractures (MCFs) in children.
METHODS: An electronic search in PubMed was undertaken in May 2012. The titles and abstracts from these results were read to identify studies within the selection criteria. Eligibility criteria included studies published in English or German from the last 20 years (from 1992 onwards) reporting clinical series of MCFs in children and adolescents until the age of 18.
RESULTS: The search strategy initially identified 542 st

INTRODUCTION: Our goal in this study was to propose an alternative closed reduction method to avoid open reduction in the management of pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures. A temporary Kirschner wire is inserted to the proximal part of the humerus to be used as a joystick to have a better control of the proximal fragment.
PATIENTS: Twenty-three patients with closed Gartland type III extension fractures were operated between 2003 and 2007. Mean age of the patients was 6.7 (4-10) years.
METHOD: Uninjured and fractured elbow's Bauman angles, lateral condylar angles, the carrying angles an

BACKGROUND: Fracture of the distal radius is a common clinical problem, particularly in older white women with osteoporosis. Displaced fractures are usually reduced using closed reduction methods, which are non-surgical and generally comprise traction and manipulation, and the resulting position stabilised by external means, typically plaster cast immobilisation.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the evidence for the relative effectiveness of different methods of closed reduction for displaced fractures of the distal radius in adults.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Musculoskeletal Injuries G

The anatomical and functional outcome and complications after closed reduction and external fixation of unstable fractures of the distal radius were reviewed in 29 patients. The fractures were reduced by longitudinal traction and closed manipulation under fluoroscopic control, and the reduced position was retained by a standard half-frame Hoffmann external fixator for six to eight weeks. The mean follow-up time was four (3-7) years. The reduction failed in three patients after too early removal of the fixator (three to five weeks). For the rest of the patients the dorsal angulation, the radial

Complex segmental femoral fractures are usually not amenable to closed reduction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a series of patients who had undergone four pins assisted reduction and intramedullary nail fixation to determine the therapeutic effect of this closed reduction technique. Between December 2010 and January 2013, 15 consecutive patients with segmental femoral fractures were treated with four pins assisted reduction at our hospital. The patient was placed in a supine position on a radiolucent fracture table and a gentle traction was attempted on the limb. Usually, the prox

INTRODUCTION: In the literature the best results for pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures have been achieved by closed reduction and wire fixation. However, in these reports the patient group of open reduction and pinning contained the patients who had had previous ineffective closed reduction trials. This retrospective study compared open and closed reduction with pinning, in which the first group of patients was all consecutively treated with open reduction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 99 children with displaced extension-type supracondylar fractures of humerus who had co

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the relationship between recovery of anatomical integrity and functional outcome in elderly patients with distal radius fractures by comparing the effects of open reduction and closed reduction.
METHODS: The clinical data were retrospectively analyzed from 78 elderly patients with distal radius fractures treating with no-operation and operation from February 2005 to March 2009. Thirty-seven patients underwent closed reduction and splintlet fixation or cast application (non-operation group), and forty-one patients underwent open reduction and internal fixation (operation

Thirty two patients with fracture dislocations of the base of the thumb metacarpal with a single large fracture fragment (Bennett's fracture) were either treated by open reduction and internal fixation or closed reduction and percutaneous transarticular Kirschner wiring. All were assessed at a mean follow up of 7 (range 3-18) years. Patients with an articular step off more than 1mm were excluded. The type of treatment did not influence the clinical outcome or the prevalence of radiological post-traumatic arthritis. The percutaneous group had a significantly higher incidence of adduction deform

PURPOSE: To evaluate clinical and fracture-related factors associated with failed closed reduction in high-risk pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHF), with emphasis on fracture morphology and intraoperative multidirectional instability.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 318 consecutive children aged 2-12 years who underwent surgery for Gartland type III SCHF or intraoperatively confirmed Gartland type IV instability between 2015 and 2025. Fractures were classified as typical extension-type, medial oblique, lateral oblique, or flexion-type. Univariable and multivaria

We treated 22 children with a supracondylar fracture of the humerus and an ipsilateral fracture of the forearm by closed reduction and percutaneous fixation. There were four Gartland type-II and 18 Gartland type-III supracondylar fractures of the humerus. There were fractures of both bones of the forearm in 16 and of the radius in six. Both the supracondylar and the distal forearm fractures were treated by closed reduction and percutaneous fixation. The mean follow-up time was 38.6 months. At the latest follow-up there were 21 excellent or good results and one fair result. There were no cases

Management of a dislocated ankle fracture can be challenging because of instability of the ankle mortise, a compromised soft tissue envelope, and the potential neurovascular compromise. Every effort should be made to quickly and efficiently relocate the disrupted ankle joint. Within the emergency department setting, narcotics and benzodiazepines can be used to sedate the patient before attempting closed reduction. The combination of narcotics and benzodiazepines provides relief of pain and muscle guarding; however, it conveys a risk of seizure as well as respiratory arrest. An alternative to c

Colles' fracture is a distal radius injury, with dorsal tilt of the distal radial fracture fragment. Its typical treatment involves reduction and plaster cast immobilization to restore its anatomical position. Sometimes, reduction maneuver may be difficult with poor outcomes, requiring repeated reduction maneuvers or eventual surgical treatment. The author proposes a simple, easy, and reliable manual reduction technique.

We retrospectively reviewed the results of closed treatment in 7 patients with acute locked posterior fracture-dislocations of the shoulder. Shoulders were reduced with patients under general anesthesia and were splinted in neutral rotation for 6 weeks. Follow-up averaged 46 months (range, 24-88 months). All shoulders were reduced within 14 days. Humeral head defects ranged from 18% to 32% of the articular surface, and all patients had documented posterior instability under anesthesia after relocation. Of the 7 patients, 6 had a stable shoulder. The mean American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons sh

Distal humerus shear fractures are uncommon intra-articular injuries including capitellum fractures, most frequently resulting from a fall on an outstretched hand where the radial head pushes the capitellum while it engages in a full elbow extension and axial load. Displaced fractures, particularly those classified as Dubberley Type 2A capitellum fracture, are typically managed surgically with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) to restore articular congruity and allow early mobilization. Successful nonoperative treatment in such cases remains limited with high complication rates. A 35

Tibial plateau fractures, though rare, are critical due to their impact on weightbearing and joint function. The gold standard for surgical treatment is open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), aiming to restore the tibial plateau's anatomy and address any concurrent injuries. However, ORIF involves extensive soft tissue dissection, posing risks such as infections, neurovascular injury, and long-term joint stiffness. This Technical Note presents an arthroscopic-assisted approach for the reduction and internal fixation of a Schatzker II tibial plateau fracture. The procedure involved minima

The zygomatic bone is one of the most prominent bones in the facial region. It forms the most anterolateral projection on each side of the middle face and is articulated with the maxilla, frontal, and temporal bones. Isolated zygomatic arch fractures can occur when a direct force is applied to the zygoma. A variety of intraoral and extraoral techniques have been used as closed reduction techniques for isolated fractures of the zygomatic arch. In this case report, we aim to present our approach for the treatment of a 40-year-old patient with an isolated right zygomatic arch fracture. We used th

The displaced flexion type supracondylar humeral fractures (SCHF) are inherently unstable and there is great intraoperative difficulty in obtaining and maintaining the fracture reduction by closed means. We introduced a technique for closed reduction and K-wires pinning of displaced flexion type SCHF. Fourteen patients with flexion-type SCHF (9 boys and 5 girls) underwent a reduction technique using a construct of three K-wires. The proximal wire was used for rotational control of the proximal fragment and the two distal wires were used for correction of the flexion and rotational deformity of
