Early corneal findings in Cogan's syndrome.

We evaluated the ocular manifestations of Cogan's syndrome in 13 consecutive patients. The most frequent and earliest ocular finding was bilateral peripheral subepithelial keratitis consisting of faint, nummular lesions. The subepithelial keratitis was responsive to topical administration of corticosteroids. Peripheral subepithelial keratitis was seen in four patients and strongly suspected on review of history in three additional patients. Deep stromal keratitis was seen in two patients, while only one patient developed classic findings of Cogan's syndrome, ie. interstitial keratitis with vas

[Cogans's syndrome in childhood (author's transl)].

A case--report is given of a patient with Cogan's syndrome in childhood. This syndrome consists of non-syphilitic interstitial keratitis and vestibuloauditory symptoms. Visual loss is rare but hearing loss is rapidly progressive. A relation to autoimmune diseases especially to panarteriitis nodosa has been suggested by a number of authors.

Nocardia farcinica complicating Cogan's syndrome.

Nocardiosis is an uncommon bacterial gram-positive infection caused by aerobic actinomycetes in the genus Nocardia. Nocardiosis is typically regarded as an opportunistic infection with approximately two-thirds of infected patients being immunocompromised. In this case report we describe a 45-year-old female who presented with a right thigh abscess. She had been taking high-dose prednisolone and ciclosporin for Cogan's syndrome. She presented with erythema and severe pain over her right thigh. Ultrasound showed a collection and Nocardia farcinica was isolated. This case report stresses the impo

Atypical Cogan's syndrome: a case report.

Cogan's syndrome is a rare presumed autoimmune disorder characterized by nonsyphilitic interstitial keratitis and progressive audiovestibular symptoms. The initial report by David G. Cogan in 1945 was modified by Haynes et al in 1980 who proposed diagnostic criteria for patients with other ocular or vestibular symptoms and suggested this to be atypical Cogan's syndrome. In a more typical presentation of Cogan's syndrome, ocular and audiovestibular signs and symptoms usually appear alone and are bilateral. We report a case of 50-year-old woman with an atypical Cogan's syndrome manifested by unu

Atypical Cogan's syndrome mimicking encephalitis.

Cogan's syndrome is a rare autoimmune multisystem disease. The main clinical features of typical Cogan's syndrome are vestibuloauditory dysfunction and interstitial keratitis. The authors present a case of atypical Cogan's syndrome with headache, fever, deafness, trigeminal neuralgia and electroencephalographic abnormality which mimicked viral encephalitis.

Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm in Cogan's syndrome.

Cogan's syndrome is an autoimmune disease of unknown etiology, clinically manifested as non-syphilitic interstitial keratitis and audiovestibular symptoms. Increasing evidence suggests that Cogan's may be a systemic vasculitis. In this report, we review the vascular manifestations of Cogan's syndrome and report two cases of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm in patients with this disorder.

Cogan's syndrome: a rare systemic vasculitis.

A 4 year old girl presented with keratitis and ataxia. Over the next two months she developed profound hearing loss, arthritis, and polychondritis. A diagnosis of Cogan's syndrome was made. The literature on the condition is reviewed and the importance of early diagnosis to prevent hearing loss is highlighted.

Unexpected Death in a Young Child With Cogan Syndrome.

A 4-year-old child presented with a recent history of loss of appetite, weight loss, lower limb myalgias, fatigue, and new-onset hearing los … a was started, resulting in only transient benefit. The patient subsequently developed uveitis, and Cogan syndrome (CS) was suspected. Infliximab was administered but with no improvement. Treatment was then switched to tocilizumab, which led to both clinical and laboratory improvement. After 1 year of good disease control, the patient unexpectedly died. Autopsy …

[Cogan syndrome – when several of our senses are affected].

Cogans syndrome is a rare systemic inflammatory disease characterized by a combination of audiovestibular and ocular symptoms. In some cases, systemic complications occur with vascular inflammation. Aortitis and large vessel vasculitis are the most common forms, but medium-sized and small vessel involvement has also been described. The autoimmune reaction can lead to blindness, deafness and in worst case death, if these patients remain untreated or if treatment is delayed. There is no specific blood test or imaging method available and the diagnosis is clinical. It should be suspected in patie

Long-term evaluation of Cochlear implantation in Cogan syndrome.

PURPOSE: The evaluation of long-term results of cochlear implantation in patients with typical Cogan syndrome. PROCEDURES: The medical records of approximately 3,000 patients who underwent cochlear implantation in a tertiary centre within the period 1992-2007 were retrospectively examined. RESULTS: Four cochlear implant recipients with Cogan syndrome (6 implantations) were identified. One cochlea was found to be partially obliterated; the electrode could, however, be completely inserted. Wound healing disorders and infections in a patient with systemic symptoms were the only postoperative co…

Cogan syndrome: autoimmune-mediated audiovestibular symptoms and ocular inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Cogan syndrome is an uncommon disorder that presents with symptoms involving the eyes and ears. At its onset, it can mimic many common entities. Family physicians should be aware of Cogan syndrome because it can be successfully treated if it is recognized early in its course. It is one of the few treatable causes of deafness. METHODS: MEDLINE files were searched from 1982 to the present for "Cogan's syndrome." Additional references were obtained by cross-referencing bibliographies from available articles. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: As first defined in 1945, Cogan syndrome includes …

Cogan-Reese syndrome with Iris cyst: A novel presentation.

PURPOSE: To report an atypical case of Cogan-Reese syndrome associated with iris cyst in a young adult male. METHODS: Slit-lamp biomicroscopic examination, swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography (ASOCT) and ultrasound bio-microscopy (UBM) were done to evaluate and characterize the nature of the iris cyst. Gonioscopy, specular microscopy and confocal microscopy were attempted, but unsuccessful due to the large corneal opacity. RESULTS: On slit-lamp biomicroscopy, a large nasal corneal opacity with overlying band-shaped keratopathy was noted, with history suggestive of a tr
