BACKGROUND: Cardiometabolic disorders (hypertension, diabetes) are key modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. They often co-occur; yet, the extent to which they independently affect brain structure and function is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized their combined effect is greater in associations with cognitive function and neuroimaging biomarkers of white matter (WM) health and cerebral perfusion in a diverse older adult cohort.
METHODS: Participants aged 50-85 years received: clinical evaluation, oral glucose tolerance testing, neuroimaging, cognitive testi

BACKGROUND: Social cognition is an important aspect of social behavior in humans. Social cognitive deficits are associated with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. In this study we examine the neural substrates of social cognition and face processing in a group of healthy young adults to examine the neural substrates of social cognition.
METHODS: Fifty-seven undergraduates completed a battery of social cognition tasks and were assessed with electroencephalography (EEG) during a face-perception task. A subset (N=22) were administered a face-perception task during functional magn

OBJECTIVES: Since the discovery of psychopharmacological treatments in the early 1950s, followed by the development of second-generation antidepressants and antipsychotics, biological psychiatry has not achieved much progress. Recent technological advances in the field of non-invasive brain stimulation open new perspectives in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Amongst them, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) modulates cortical excitability and induces long-lasting effects. Here, we aimed at evaluating whether tDCS has potential to be developed as an innovative treatment in ps

Individuals with schizophrenia exhibit consistent deficits in social cognition such as emotion perception, attributional style, and theory of mind, which may be targets of psychosocial treatments. Previous intervention studies have typically focused on only one aspect of social cognition and have not assessed generalization of treatment to improvements in social functioning. This paper describes preliminary data from a new group-based treatment, Social Cognition and Interaction Training (SCIT), aimed at improving social cognition in schizophrenia. Eighteen inpatients with schizophrenia spectru

The purpose of the study was to find some characteristic features of cortical defects in the neuropsychological examination of children with SSPE. These findings could be very useful in early differential diagnosis. We analysed the results of the neuropsychological assessment of 13 children selected from a group of 100 patients. The most frequent defects were found in the visuo-spatial functions. The clinical analysis of the obtained results was studied in view to establish, whether there are the signs of the dysfunction of the right or both cerebral hemispheres.

Emerging evidence suggests that dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, particularly cortisol, may contribute to the cognitive deficits commonly observed in psychotic disorders. We conducted the first combined systematic review and quantitative synthesis of associations between cortisol and cognition in psychosis. Twelve studies met inclusion criteria (940 participants; 74.68% cases; 39.57% female; mean age = 31.83 years). Of these, nine studies (822 participants; 71.04% cases; 35.96% female; mean age = 32.72 years) contributed data to three-level meta-analyses examinin

BACKGROUND: Language impairments are common in affective and psychotic disorders, yet their patterns and underlying pathomechanisms remain insufficiently understood. A transdiagnostic perspective provides a framework for identifying shared and disorder-specific language alterations across diagnostic boundaries. Combining natural language processing (NLP) with network analysis enables the investigation of complex associations between linguistic, cognitive, and psychopathological features.
METHODS: Spontaneous speech from N = 372 participants (119 MDD, 27 BD, 48 SSD and 178 HC) was elicited usi

INTRODUCTION: Difficulties in interpersonal interactions have been related to Social Cognition (SC) impairments in eating disorders (EDs). However, results do not account for differences between restrictive (rED) and purgative (pED) profiles and are just based on decoding tasks. This study assessed SC by Theory of Mind (ToM) abilities in ToM decoding and inference tasks between rED and pED patients and healthy women and its relationship with clinical variables.
METHOD: 37 rED patients, 42 pED patients and 34 controls were evaluated using the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC)

BACKGROUND: Autism and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) both feature atypical social cognition. Despite evidence for comparable group-level performance in lower-level emotion processing and higher-level mentalizing, limited research has examined the neural basis of social cognition across these conditions. Our goal was to compare the neural correlates of social cognition in autism, SSDs, and typically developing controls (TDCs).
METHODS: Data came from two harmonized studies in individuals diagnosed with autism or SSDs and TDCs (aged 16-35 years), including behavioral social cognitive

BACKGROUND: Suppressor of tumorgenicity 2 (ST2) is highly expressed in brain tissue and is a receptor for interleukin 33 (IL-33). ST2 exists in two forms, a transmembrane receptor (ST2L) and a soluble decoy receptor (sST2). IL-33 binds to ST2L, triggering downstream signaling pathways involved in amyloid plaque clearance. Conversely, sST2 binds competitively to IL-33, attenuating its neuroprotective effects. High sST2 levels have been reported in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), suggesting that the IL-33/ST2 signaling pathway may be implicated in neurodegenerative

SLITRK2 is a single-pass transmembrane protein expressed at postsynaptic neurons that regulates neurite outgrowth and excitatory synapse maintenance. In the present study, we report on rare variants (one nonsense and six missense variants) in SLITRK2 on the X chromosome identified by exome sequencing in individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. Functional studies showed that some variants displayed impaired membrane transport and impaired excitatory synapse-promoting effects. Strikingly, these variations abolished the ability of SLITRK2 wild-type to reduce the levels of the receptor tyros

Emerging evidence indicates that gut microbiota is important in the regulation of brain activity and cognitive functions. Microbes mediate communication among the metabolic, peripheral immune, and central nervous systems via the microbiota-gut-brain axis. However, it is not well understood how the gut microbiome and neurons in the brain mutually interact or how these interactions affect normal brain functioning and cognition. We summarize the mechanisms whereby the gut microbiota regulate the production, transportation, and functioning of neurotransmitters. We also discuss how microbiome dysbi

We present a case-series comparison of patients with cross-modal semantic impairments consequent on either (a) bilateral anterior temporal lobe atrophy in semantic dementia (SD) or (b) left-hemisphere fronto-parietal and/or posterior temporal stroke in semantic aphasia (SA). Both groups were assessed on a new test battery designed to measure how performance is influenced by concept familiarity, typicality and specificity. In line with previous findings, performance in SD was strongly modulated by all of these factors, with better performance for more familiar items (regardless of typicality),

The possibilities of the use of electroencephalography for evaluating intellectual-mnemonic disorders in elderly patients with cerebral atherosclerosis have been studied. The study included 95 subjects aged 60 to 74 years with varying intensity of circulatory atherosclerotic encephalopathy (without brain stroke). The psychological tests were performed according to Wechsler's methods. To evaluate the EEG, visual and automatic spectral analyses were employed. The data obtained were analyzed by means of discriminant, correlation and regression methods. A certain relationship was found between the

Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is the most abundantly expressed aquaporin in the central nervous system (CNS) and is an integral part of the glymphatic system that cannot be ignored. The CNS has the glymphatic system instead of the conventional lymphatic system. The glymphatic system plays an essential role in the pathophysiological processes of many cognitive disorders. AQP4 shows noteworthy changes in various cognitive disorders and is part of the pathogenesis of these diseases. For this reason, AQP4 has attracted attention as a potential and promising target for regulating and even reversing cognitive
