The historical development of Mauritius and in particular the early developments in health care are crucial to an understanding of the contemporary health system. The introduction of major epidemic diseases through the movements of French soldiers to and from India and the immigration of indentured laborers from India account for the high mortality and morbidity rates in the 18th and 19th centuries and later. The colonial economy created and fortified the dependence on a single cash crop and on imported food. It also contributed toward the impoverization of large sections of the Mauritian popu

Malignant lymphoma occurred in six Macaca arctoides from a colony of 83 animals during a 30-month period. The cells of two neoplasms had T cell markers. Concurrent disease processes included atypical mycobacterial disease in four macaques and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in one.

A colony of nude mice was maintained under controlled standards of care for 12 months, at which time a rapidly escalating liver disease developed in the animals, characterized by jaundice, emaciation, and rapid death. Histologically, the livers had swollen, vacuolated hepatic cells and increased numbers of enlarged Kupffer cells. Mouse hepatitis virus was not isolated from the livers of sick mice. Although the nature of the lesions suggested toxicity, efforts to reproduce the lesions by increased exposure to chemical compounds used for colony husbandry were unsuccessful. A definitive determina

Drug therapy during the Colonial and Revolutionary War period in America is discussed. Therapy in the 17th and 18th centuries remained largely symptomatic rather than curative. Treatment included such "depletion" measures as purging, sweating, bleeding, blistering and vomiting. Purgatives, emetics, opium, cinchona bark, camphor, potassium nitrate and mercury were among the most widely used drugs. European herbals, dispensatories and textbooks were used in the American colonies, and beginning in the early 18th century, British "patent medicines" were imported. During the Revolutionary War, the

BACKGROUND: The establishment of Anopheles stephensi in Africa has raised concerns about its potential role in transmitting local Plasmodium falciparum strains relative to native primary vectors. To address this, we evaluated the permissiveness of a newly established An. stephensi colony in comparison with a laboratory-adapted An. arabiensis colony, the principal malaria vector in Ethiopia, using paired direct membrane feeding assay (DMFA).
METHODS: We recruited 43 patients with microscopy-confirmed P. falciparum gametocytes at Metehara Health Center, central Ethiopia. Fresh venous blood samp

Austrian beekeepers frequently suffered severe colony losses during the last decade similar to trends all over Europe. This first surveillance study aimed to describe the health status of Austrian bee colonies and to analyze the reasons for losses for both the summer and winter season in Austria. In this study 189 apiaries all over Austria were selected using a stratified random sampling approach and inspected three times between July 2015 and spring 2016 by trained bee inspectors. The inspectors made interviews with the beekeepers about their beekeeping practice and the history of the involve

Anthropocene is not only seeing a massive decline in insect species but also documenting an unprecedented increase in the use of pesticides globally. While the impact of pesticides has been examined in some non-target insects like honeybees, very few investigations have targeted ants. This review consolidates information on the impact of anthropogenic pesticide exposure on ant colony dynamics, fecundity, and survival. While a couple of studies showcased ants' resilience upon exposure to pesticides, the majority reported negative impacts. Insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides caused behaviou

Bumblebees are key pollinators of both wild plants and agricultural crops, hence understanding their biology is critical for conservation efforts as well as for managing domesticated colonies. While their foraging and reproductive ecology have received a lot of attention, we know little about another crucial part of their behavioural repertoire: colony defence. In this study, we examine the defensive responses of individuals in whole colonies, maintained in the laboratory, after disturbing them with a mechanical jolt. As a result, we present a detailed ethogram of the defensive behaviour of Bo

OBJECTIVE: The hellbender Cryptobranchus alleganiensis is a fully aquatic, long-lived, and state endangered salamander endemic to the eastern and central United States. Chytridiomycosis is a fungal skin disease of salamanders that can be caused by either Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) or by recently described B. salamandrivorans. B. salamandrivorans is responsible for massive mortality of salamanders in Europe but, to date, has not been reported in the United States, in contrast to Bd. Common signs of Bd infection in salamanders are excessive skin shedding; cutaneous discoloration; mainly

Bacteria often attach to surfaces and grow densely-packed communities called biofilms. As biofilms grow, they expand across the surface, increasing their surface area and access to nutrients. Thus, the overall growth rate of a biofilm is directly dependent on its "range expansion" rate. One factor that limits the range expansion rate is vertical growth; at the biofilm edge there is a direct trade-off between horizontal and vertical growth-the more a biofilm grows up, the less it can grow out. Thus, the balance of horizontal and vertical growth impacts the range expansion rate and, crucially, t

AbstractColonial animals are composed of clonal individuals that remain physically connected and physiologically integrated. Salps are tunicates with a dual life cycle, including an asexual solitary stage that buds sexual colonies composed of jet-propelling zooids that efficiently swim together as a single unit by multijet propulsion. Colonies from different species develop distinct architectures characterized by their zooid arrangement patterns, but this diversity has received little attention. Thus, these architectures have never been formally defined using a framework of variables and axes

The field of regenerative biology has taken a keen interest in the Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) over the past few decades, as this salamander successfully regenerates amputated limbs and injured body parts. Recent progress in research tool development has also made possible axolotl genetic manipulation and single-cell analysis, which will help understand the molecular mechanisms of complex tissue regeneration. To support the growing popularity of this model, we describe how to set up a new axolotl housing facility at a research laboratory. We also review husbandry practices for raisin
