European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE)-European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR) guideline was generated jointly by a team of researchers, including gastrointestinal radiologists and endoscopists, and represents the first full collaborative effort between the two specialties after years of turf battles involving CT colonography (CTC) and colonoscopy (CS). This guideline has a main educational purpose and it represents the attempt to find a consensus about the use of CTC in clinical practice based on the best current available evidence. Thus, it should

The presence of foreign bodies in the rectum is not an entirely rare cause for patients to seek hospital if the foreign body is stuck. Complications are rare (< 1%) but potentially severe, since intraabdominal perforations can occur. We report a case of a 58 year-old male presenting with an abscess in the left gluteal region caused by a perforating screwdriver in the rectosigmoideum. The screwdriver was removed during a laparotomy and he got a temporary stoma but made complete recovery, and a stoma reversal was planned. The risk of insufficient patient counselling due to taboos is discussed.

BACKGROUND: CT colonography is a new method for the detection of colorectal cancer and polyps.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The article is based upon a review of the literature in PubMed (1994-2005) for CT colonography, as well as the authors' own experience.
RESULTS: The seven largest publications show 55-94% sensitivity and 92-98% specificity for polyps > or = 10 mm. Compared to conventional CT examinations, the method has different requirements for patient preparation and technique. Our own experience so far is limited, but promising.
INTERPRETATION: CT colonography seems to be a good alternati

INTRODUCTION: Published studies have reported a wide range of sensitivities and specificities for computed tomographic (CT) colonography for polyp detection, generating controversy regarding its diagnostic accuracy.
METHODS: A meta-analysis of published studies comparing the accuracies of CT colonography and colonoscopy for polyp detection was performed. The pooled per-patient sensitivities and specificities were calculated at various thresholds for polyp size. Summary receiver operating characteristic (sROC) curves were also constructed.
RESULTS: Thirty studies were included in the meta-ana

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Preoperative understanding of the vascular morphology is important for preservation of the distal sigmoid colon and intraluminal processing of the mesentery in laparoscopic proximal sigmoid colon cancer surgery. We report a case of laparoscopic proximal sigmoid colon cancer surgery using sophisticated surgical-assisted CT colonography (CTC). The surgical-assisted CTC was created by combining a CTC created using SYNAPSE VINCENT and a vascular 3D-CT.
PATIENT AND METHOD: The patient was a woman in 80s with proximal sigmoid colon cancer, cT1bN0M0, cStage Ⅰ. The patient had

AIM: To determine the provision of computed tomography (CT) colonography in UK radiology departments.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire relating to the availability of CT colonography, barriers to implementation, clinical indications, technique, and practitioners was posted to clinical directors of UK radiology departments.
RESULTS: One hundred and thirty-eight departments responded. Fifty (36%) offered CT colonography in day-to-day clinical practice. Of those that did not, 68 of 87 (64%) cited limited scanner capacity as the main barrier. Of the 50 departments offering a service, 39 (7

Significant anxiety has been expressed by some over the radiation risks associated with computed tomography (CT), particularly when it applies to a screening examination such as CT colonography. These theoretic risks are far outweighed by the significant benefits colorectal cancer screening offers. Regardless of how significant the theoretic risk of CT radiation is in the older population, the ALARA principle maintains that radiation dose should be reduced to As Low As Reasonably Achievable. This article will discuss various strategies that may be utilized to reduce radiation dose and mitigate

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is common, over 13,000 cases were diagnosed in Australia in 2005. The pathogenesis of colorectal cancer has been well investigated and usually occurs in a predictable sequence progressing from dysplasia, to carcinoma in situ before becoming an invasive malignancy. The symptoms and signs of colorectal polyps and masses are often nonspecific, however, given that polyps are easily cured with polypectomy, it is vital to have an accurate and acceptable diagnostic test. Traditional tests include conventional (optical) colonoscopy and double contrast barium enema. Comput

This article provides an overview of recently developed, noninvasive imaging modalities for the evaluation of gastrointestinal disease processes. The advent of spiral computed tomography, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography and conventional magnetic resonance imaging has facilitated the noninvasive assessment of pancreaticobiliary disease. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography provides projectional images of the biliary tree and pancreatic duct, similar to those achieved by direct cholangiography, without the need to administer contrast medium. Spiral computed tomographic colonog

Colorectal cancer remains one of the most common causes of cancer death in this country. This malignancy is ideally suited for screening because the detection and removal of the precursor adenomatous polyp can prevent most colorectal cancers from ever forming. The choice of a test for screening involves consideration of various individual parameters, including patient age and the presence of risk factors for the development of colorectal cancer. Computed tomographic colonography (CTC) has emerged as the leading imaging technique for colorectal cancer screening in average-risk individuals on th

Colorectal cancer (CRC) imposes a substantial global burden, with highest incidence in Australia/New Zealand and Europe and rising early-onset cases. Screening uptake remains suboptimal worldwide, and national guidelines are not universal. Colonoscopy is the gold-standard screening modality, enabling detection and resection of precancerous lesions; polypectomy substantially reduces CRC incidence and mortality. Noninvasive tests are valuable but require follow-up colonoscopy for confirmation. Barriers to colonoscopy occur at patient (anxiety, literacy, language, culture), provider (recommendati

Among 586 patients who underwent computed tomography colonography (CTC) from May 2012 to September 2017, 333 were diagnosed with colonic diverticulosis. The incidence of colonic diverticulosis increases with age. Despite a high frequency of ascending colonic diverticulosis, multiple diverticulosis (>10 in a colonic segment) were the most frequent in the sigmoid colon. In previous studies, the frequency of detection of colonic diverticulosis by CTC was higher than that by colonoscopy and barium enema. In addition, using CTC, the detection rate of colonic diverticulosis has been recently increas

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality. Colorectal cancer commonly develops slowly via adenomatous polyps, a process usually requiring ≥ 10 years. This allows for early detection. Endoscopic polypectomy and surgery of early disease can reduce the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer. Both hemoccult testing and colonoscopy are the most widely used tests for colorectal cancer screening; however, colonoscopy has the highest sensitivity for colorectal neoplasia. Sigmoidoscopy is not commonly used for screening in Germany. Colon contrast ene

Intestinal pneumatosis refers to the presence of gas in the gastrointestinal wall. It is often difficult to clinically differentiate this condition from gastrointestinal perforation, sometimes resulting in emergency surgery. Imaging studies are important to establish the differential diagnosis. However, there have been few studies showing the efficacy of computed tomography (CT) colonography in diagnosing pneumatosis. We report a case of intestinal pneumatosis in which CT colonography was of significant diagnostic value. A 43-year-old man was referred to our hospital for a detailed investigati

Computed tomography colonography (CTC) is a relatively new technique that is currently challenging more established methods of large bowel imaging. Several workers have suggested CTC surpasses the barium enema and approaches conventional endoscopy for detection of colorectal neoplasia. Accurate diagnosis relies on technically good studies, the main aim of which is adequate bowel cleansing and distension. Furthermore, the learning curve is steep and normal colonic anatomy has to be re-learned in a CT context. This review aims to describe the technique, revise the imaging features of both normal

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and will cause 56,700 deaths in 2001, despite the availability of screening tests capable of detecting the disease at earlier stages and reducing mortality. This article reviews the natural history of colorectal cancer, common risk factors and prevention strategies, and the strengths, limitations, and cost effectiveness of available screening tests. Although reminders to undergo colorectal cancer screening have become commonplace in the popular media, compliance with screening guidelines remains poor. Although still an unpr
