[Report of the first congress of the "European Society for Emerging Infections". (Budapest, 13-16 September 1998)].

The first congress of the recently founded European Society for Emerging Infections was held in Budapest from 13 to 16 September 1998. About 200 physicians, veterinarians, biologists and microbiologists attended this meeting. The euphoria of the 1970's with respect to infectious diseases is now gone. During the last twenty years about thirty new infections agents have been identified and re-emergence of old diseases which had disappeared to a large extent, has been reported in many countries. Most newly emerging diseases in man are of zoonotic origin or are closely related to disease in animal

Infections and cancer: the "fifty shades of immunity" hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Since the beginning of the twentieth century, infection has emerged as a fundamental aspect of cancer causation with a growing number of pathogens recognized as oncogenic. Meanwhile, oncolytic viruses have also attracted considerable interest as possible agents of tumor destruction. DISCUSSION: Lost in the dichotomy between oncogenic and oncolytic agents, the indirect influence of infectious organisms on carcinogenesis has been largely unexplored. We describe the various ways - from functional aspects to evolutionary considerations such as modernity mismatches - by which infectiou

Koch's postulates and the pathogenesis of comparative infectious disease causation associated with Bartonella species.

In his homage to Lucretius ('Georgica'), Vergil is credited with stating: 'Felix qui potuit rerum cognoscere causas' ('Fortunate is he who knows the causes of things'). Based on numerous commentaries and publications it is obvious that clinicians, diagnosticians and biomedical research scientists continue to struggle with disease causation, particularly in the assessment of the pathogenic role of 'stealth pathogens' that produce persistent infections in the host. Bartonella species, because of their evolutionary ability to induce persistent intravascular infections, present substantial challen

Intersectional stigma and the non-communicable disease syndemic in the context of HIV: protocol for a multisite, observational study in the USA.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing burden of non-communicable diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidaemia, presents key challenges to achieving optimal HIV care outcomes among ageing people living with HIV. These diseases are often comorbid and are exacerbated by psychosocial and structural inequities. This interaction among multiple health conditions and social factors is referred to as a syndemic. In the USA, there are substantial disparities by social position (ie, racial, ethnic and socioeconomic status) in the prevalence and/or control of non-communicable diseases and HIV. Inters

[Research progress in chrono-nutrition for four major chronic and non-communicable diseases].

Chronic and non-communicable disease is the leading cause of death and disease burden globally. Traditional prevention and control strategies mainly focuses on dietary composition and total energy intake, with less emphasis on the temporal patterns of eating behavior. Chrono-nutrition, as an emerging interdisciplinary field, focuses on the interaction between meal timing, frequency, regularity, and the body's endogenous circadian rhythms, and its impact on health. This paper systematically summarizes the influence and potential mechanisms of chrono-nutrition in four major chronic and non-commu

Some observations on the communicable diseases as public health problems.

Notwithstanding the deficiencies in reporting, an attempt is made in the present study to provide some useful information on the importance of the communicable diseases in the world over the decade 1957-58 to 1967-68. In this period health authorities in the developing countries almost invariably reported communicable diseases as their main public health problems, whereas, in the developed countries, the only communicable diseases still considered as public health problems were tuberculosis, venereal diseases, and hepatitis. In the developing countries nearly half of the principal causes of de

Evaluating the timeliness of reporting in a First Nations communicable diseases program.

BACKGROUND: Timely reporting of communicable diseases is necessary to enable a prompt response to mitigate and control outbreaks. This is especially true among First Nations communities due to a number of factors, including unique social determinants of health, which can contribute to rapid disease transmission. OBJECTIVE: To assess the timeliness of reporting for 12 notifiable communicable diseases in the Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority, which includes 33 First Nations on-reserve communities in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada, and to assess whether there were differences in reporting ti

Social determinants of health in non-communicable diseases prevention policies in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The South African government has developed many policies for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases. However, non-communicable diseases remain among the major causes of morbidity and mortality in South Africa. Although these diseases are linked to interaction of multiple risk factors, many of which are modifiable, they continue to cause much suffering particularly among the marginalised and people from the lower socio-economic status. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this research was to explore and present the inclusion of social determinants of health in the policie

The epidemiology of 32 selected communicable diseases in Iraq, 2004-2016.

BACKGROUND: The 2003 invasion of Iraq significantly undermined population health. However, there is a lack of understanding of how it undermined communicable disease control. This study was performed to assess the incidence trends of 32 communicable diseases in post-conflict Iraq. METHODS: Reported incidence data for 32 communicable diseases (2004-2016) were collected from routine reports sent to the Iraqi Ministry of Health by primary health centers, and general and tertiary hospitals. Incidence (per 100 000) was defined as the number of reported incident cases divided by the population size

Influenza outbreak in a Canadian correctional facility.

Correctional facilities face increased risk of communicable disease transmission and outbreaks. We describe the progression of an influenza outbreak in a Canadian remand facility and suggest strategies for preventing, identifying and responding to outbreaks in this setting. In total, six inmates had laboratory-confirmed influenza resulting in 144 exposed contacts. Control measures included enhanced isolation precautions, restricting admissions to affected living units, targeted vaccination and antiviral prophylaxis. This report highlights the importance of setting specific outbreak guidelines

[The epidemiologic situation of infectious disease in West Germany in 1979].

A survey is given of the occurrence of communicable diseases in the Federal Republic of Germany including Berlin (West) in 1979. The epidemiological situation was dominated by salmonellosis, infectious hepatitis, scarlet fever, and meningitis. There was a striking increase in imported tropical diseases, such as malaria and leprosy. Poliomyelitis continued to decrease. There was an insignificant number of influenza cases in the winter 79/80. Due to the coming into force of the Amendment of the Federal Communicable Diseases Act on 1 January 1980 the obligation to notify communicable diseases has

Research that influences policy and practice - characteristics of operational research to improve malaria control in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Much communicable disease control research has had little impact on local control programme policy and practice for want of an operational component. The operational research model - the systematic search for knowledge on interventions, tools or strategies that enhance programme effectiveness - is gaining recognition as an appropriate method for addressing perplexing questions within public health programmes. METHODS: A series of operational research studies were conducted to refine malaria diagnosis in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa between 1995 and 1999. The grounded theory a

Population mobility and disease transmission: the example of guinea worm.

Population mobility can bring people into contact with disease agents, and transfer these agents to new populations. This paper suggests ways in which population movements are implicated in the transmission of one communicable disease, guinea worm or dracunculiasis, a parasitic disease affecting 5-15 million people every year in Africa, India and Pakistan. A typology of population mobility which distinguishes between rural and urban sectors, and between circulation and uni-directional permanent migration is used. An understanding of population movements associated with guinea worm, and with ot

Prioritising communicable disease research in Afghanistan: an application of the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative (CHNRI) methodology.

INTRODUCTION: Communicable disease control in Afghanistan has deteriorated amid growing fragility, health system disruption and declining international aid since the 2021 regime change. Outbreaks of measles, pertussis, pneumonia, cholera, malaria, dengue, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, tuberculosis and polio continue to plague the population in Afghanistan. This study addresses a critical evidence gap by systematically ranking research priorities for communicable diseases in Afghanistan. METHODS: This study applied the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative (CHNRI) methodology, whi

An overview of the burden of non-communicable diseases in India.

Non-communicable disease continues to be an important public health problem in India, being responsible for a major proportion of mortality and morbidity. Demographic changes, changes in the lifestyle along with increased rates of urbanization are the major reasons responsible for the tilt towards the non-communicable diseases. In India, there is no regular system for collecting data on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) which can be said to be of adequate coverage or quality. Lack of trained health care workers, primary care providers armed with inadequate knowledge and skills along with ill-de

The reporting of communicable diseases.

Surveillance of communicable diseases in the United States depends on the reporting of cases by primary physicians. It is widely recognized, however, that significant numbers of such cases are not reported. Reporting rates for many communicable diseases have never been determined. In this study, discharge records of 11 hospitals in Washington, DC were searched for cases of selected communicable diseases, and the percentage of these cases reported was determined. Five hundred and seventy of 93,563 (0.61%) patients hospitalized over the study period had one of these communicable diseases. Report
