Concomitants of success in acquiring an augmentative communication system: changes in attention, communication, and sociability.

Evidence was presented that successful participation in augmentative communication intervention can foster developmental changes that extend beyond the targeted effect. Ten persons with severe mental retardation were assigned in matched pairs to a lexigram condition (graphic symbols) or a control condition (social stimulation). A coding system, developed to assess pre- versus postintervention performance in four domains, was applied to videotapes of each subject in dyadic interaction. The 3 subjects who successfully acquired lexigrams exhibited changes in attention, intentional communication,

High-Tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication in a Burn Patient With Voicelessness: A Case Study.

Loss of speech due to mechanical ventilation is common among patients admitted to intensive care. This condition, often referred to as voicelessness, can generate negative emotions such as frustration and anger. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) techniques are useful for facilitating communication, but their use can be complex in patients with extensive burns. This case study describes the use of a high-tech AAC system based on a motion sensor in an adolescent with second- and third-degree burns covering 60% of the total body surface area, requiring both invasive and non-invasiv

Review of methods for conducting speech research with minimally verbal individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

The purpose of this paper was to review best-practice methods of collecting and analyzing speech production data from minimally verbal autistic speakers. Data on speech production data in minimally verbal individuals are valuable for a variety of purposes, including phenotyping, clinical assessment, and treatment monitoring. Both perceptual ("by ear") and acoustic analyses of speech can reveal subtle improvements as a result of therapy that may not be apparent when correct/incorrect judgments are used. Key considerations for collecting and analyzing speech production data from this population

Exploration of multimodal alternative access for individuals with severe motor impairments: Proof of concept.

Many individuals with complex communication needs and severe motor impairments are unable to control technologies through conventional means and require alternative access techniques to achieve accurate and efficient access. With current alternative access techniques, individuals with severe motor impairments are limited in that they can only use one access technique at a time. The purpose of this project was to test proof of concept of a new multimodal access technique which integrated eye gaze and single switch scanning selection techniques. The aims were to investigate the learning patterns

Communication skills among children with spinal muscular atrophy type 1: A parent survey.

Spinal muscular atrophy is one of the most common fatal autosomal recessive disorders. Children diagnosed with SMA Type 1 (SMAT1) demonstrate severe oral motor weakness and flaccid dysarthria progressing to complete anarthria. A review of literature illustrates that little has been described regarding augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) use among these children, although communication has a critical impact on quality of life and participation in daily activities. Responses to an investigator-developed parent survey were obtained to appraise communication skills and opportunities a

Beyond access: the intersecting role of AAC, literacy, and technology.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, access to communication, literacy, and technology have become essential for citizenship, community inclusion, and social and emotional well-being. This paper reflects my personal experience on these topics, exploring the challenges faced by people who lack access to robust language-based expressive augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools. Drawing on my background as an educator, I discuss the implications of failing to provide such access, highlighting its effect on literacy skills and social inclusion. I also argue that many AAC tec

"I don't think you can really understand it until you put it to action": school-based SLPs' reflections on graduate and continuing education in AAC.

Graduate programs have made strides to improve augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) learning opportunities for pre-service speech-language pathologists (SLPs). In addition, a number of continuing education opportunities are available to practicing SLPs; however, many still report feeling underprepared to serve clients with AAC needs. The purpose of this study was to describe school-based SLPs' perspectives regarding their graduate training, on-the-job experience, and ongoing professional development needs related to AAC. Semi-structured interviews were completed with 17 school-base

Integrating familiar listeners and speech recognition technologies into augmentative and alternative communication intervention for adults with down syndrome: Descriptive exploration.

Many individuals with Down syndrome exhibit speech impairments that necessitate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) intervention. AAC intervention allows for access to communication through means other than, or supplemental to, speech. This descriptive study provided initial insight into the feasibility of incorporating familiar listeners (e.g., family members) and speech recognition technology into AAC intervention to increase communication success for individuals with Down syndrome. Six adults with Down syndrome participated. The participants' intelligibility to a familiar liste

Speech-Language pathologists' decisions when designing an aided AAC display for a compilation case study of a beginning communicator.

PURPOSE: The current study sought to identify decisions speech-language pathologists (SLPs) make and their rationale for those decisions when designing an AAC display for a hypothetical school-aged child who was a beginning communicator. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) displays support communicative interactions for children who are unable to use spoken language to meet their communication needs. Children who are at the early stages of learning language, often termed beginning or emerging communicators, may rely heavily on the AAC display to support comprehension and expressio

Language learning, recasts, and interaction involving AAC: background and potential for intervention.

For children with typical development, language is learned through everyday discursive interaction. Adults mediate child participation in such interactions through the deployment of a range of co-constructive strategies, including repeating, questioning, prompting, expanding, and reformulating the child's utterances. Adult reformulations of child utterances, also known as recasts, have also been shown to relate to the acquisition of linguistic structures in children with language and learning disabilities and children and adults learning a foreign language. In this paper we discuss the theoret

Emotional availability in mothers and their children with spinal muscular atrophy type 1 who require augmentative and alternative communication: a mixed-methods pilot study.

Emotional availability in parent-child interactions fosters children's socioemotional development. Little is known about the emotional availability of parents and children with profound motor disabilities and complex communication needs or the contributions of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to emotional availability. To begin addressing these gaps, this pilot study focused on three mothers and their children with spinal muscular atrophy Type 1 who could not speak and required AAC. The study used a mixed-methods design. Mother-child interactions were rated using the Emotional
