Use and sources of payment for health and community services for children with impaired mobility.

A survey was made of the parents of 380 children whose mobility impairments require the use of a wheelchair, walker, or braces. They were asked about equipment, health services, related services, and family support services used during the previous year. There was extensive use of equipment and traditional medical and health services, such as visits to primary care and specialist physicians; there was moderate use of related health services, such as physical or occupational therapy and child counseling; and there was very little use of community-based family support services, such as respite c

Unveiling community-level factors: a multilevel mixed-effect analysis of eye care service utilization and associated factors in Andabet, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Eye care service utilization (ECSU) is vital for preventing and managing visual impairment, yet its uptake remains suboptimal in many low- and middle-income countries, including Ethiopia. Visual impairment imposes significant economic and social burdens, much of which is preventable with timely screening and treatment. Despite previous studies on ECSU, gaps remain in understanding individual- and community-level factors influencing its use in specific regions. This study aimed to determine the magnitude and associated factors of eye care service utilization (ECSU) among older adult

Utilization of health care services among subgroups of urban homeless and housed poor.

The objective of this study was to describe health services utilization by homeless and housed poor adults stratified by six-month primary sheltering arrangements. The primary method used in this study was a cross-sectional survey of 373 homeless adults. Interviews at twenty-four community-based sites (in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania) assessed demographic and clinical characteristics, reasons for homelessness, functional status and social support networks, and health services utilization during the previous six months. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified factors independentl

Contributors to Delayed Prenatal Care among Rural and Underserved Populations: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Timely and adequate prenatal care is critical for improving pregnancy outcomes. Rural and underserved women in the U.S. have a higher burden of chronic disease, higher risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, and lower access to maternity care services. This study explored perceived barriers and challenges to prenatal care in rural and underserved counties in the Texas Panhandle. METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 34 key informants (maternal health partners, healthcare professionals, and organizational leaders) in six Texas Panhandle counties. Recruit

Dementia care in a rapidly aging society.

INTRODUCTION: As one of the most rapidly aging societies globally, Korea's efforts to mitigate the social burden of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) may provide valuable insights. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods review of studies and policies related to dementia care in Korea over the past 25 years, including quantitative analysis of administrative and comparative data. RESULTS: Estimates suggest a high social burden from ADRD, with annual costs increasing from 0.9% to 3.8% of gross domestic product between 2019 and 2050. Pilot programs for integrated community care and

Determining factors of birthplace choice among women in Ghana: evidence from the 2022 nationally representative data.

BACKGROUND: The availability and accessibility of high-quality maternal healthcare remain a significant challenge for health systems worldwide. Evidence demonstrates that health insurance positively influences the utilization of maternal healthcare services in Sub-Saharan Africa. But some subscribers of health insurance poorly utilize health facilities due to some persistent sociodemographic factors in Ghana. Low Facility-based delivery increases the risk of both maternal and child mortalities. Most of the recent studies conducted in Ghana have not determined the regional prevalence of Facilit

Assessing the ability of cross-trained pharmacy technician-community health workers to identify non-medical drivers of health resources.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies are increasingly attempting to address non-medical drivers of health (NMDoH) by screening patients for health-related social needs (HRSNs). Cross-training pharmacy technicians as community health workers (PhT-CHWs) may expand pharmacies' capacity to provide these services, but little is known about the community resources identified by PhT-CHWs during training or their associated Z-codes. Characterizing these resources may inform implementation of pharmacy-based community resource referral services. OBJECTIVE: To describe the NMDoH resources identified by PhTs

Non-prescribed drug use and its associated factors among pregnant women in Southwest Ethiopia.

Non-prescribed drug utilization is the act of using medication to treat self-diagnosed problems without consulting a healthcare provider. Pregnant women are among the most vulnerable population groups for self-medication to treat pregnancy-related problems. The use of non-prescribed drugs, however, has numerous detrimental effects on both the growing fetus and the mother. Besides, community-based information regarding the pattern of non-prescribed drug use is limited in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aims to investigate non-prescribed drug use and its associated factors among pregnant women in Ji

What Happens Next? Traumatic Brain Injury in the Community.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) continues to substantially impact the lives of millions of people around the world annually. Community-based prevention and support of TBI are particularly challenging and underresearched aspects of TBI management. Ongoing cognitive, emotional, and other effects of TBI are not immediately obvious in community settings such as schools, workplaces, sporting clubs, aged care facilities, and support agencies providing homelessness or domestic violence support. This is compounded by a lack of guidance and support materials designed for nonmedical settings. Connectivity

Engaging Black and Latinx Communities in Building Capacity for Behavioral Health.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 affected nearly every aspect of people's lives worldwide. In the United States, the consequences of closures and quarantine increased stress, worry, isolation, and mental health and substance use problems, leading to behavioral health (BH) problems. These conditions were exacerbated among Black and Latinx populations by language barriers, lack of mental health access, shortage of mental health providers, inadequate or lack of insurance coverage, and the health care system's unfamiliarity with Black and Latinx cultures and consequent Black and Latinx distrust in it. METH

The law of diminishing marginal returns in health insurance: evidence on child health outcomes from Pakistan's Sehat Sahulat program.

BACKGROUND: Child malnutrition remains a serious public health challenge in Pakistan. The national health insurance initiative, the Sehat Sahulat Program (SSP), aims to improve access to health care for low-income families. This study examines whether the effectiveness of SSP follows the Law of Diminishing Marginal Returns (LDMR), whereby the marginal health benefits of insurance are greatest for the poorest households and decline with increasing wealth. METHODS: We analyzed data on 4,499 children under 5 years of age in the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey 2017-18. To address endogenei
