Diptera of sanitary importance associated with composting of biosolids in Argentina.

OBJECTIVE: Odorous compounds produced at the biosolids composting plant in Bariloche (NW Patagonia) attract a variety of insects, mainly belonging to the order Diptera. In order to characterize these flies, collected specimens were taxonomically identified, their community characteristics were described and their sanitary and synanthropic importance and autochthonous or introduced character were determined. METHODS: Sampling was performed from October 1999 until March 2000. Adults were collected using an entomological net, and larvae and puparia were obtained from the composting material and …

Relationship between compost stability and extractable organic carbon.

Establishing a simple yet reliable compost stability test is essential for a better compost quality control and utilization efficiency. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between extractable organic carbon (OC) and compost stability based on 18 compost samples from five composting facilities. The compost samples were extracted sequentially with water for 2 h [water(2h)] and 0.1 M NaOH for 2 and 24 h [NaOH(2h) and NaOH(24h), respectively]. The extractable OC was further separated into fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA) fractions by adjusting the pH to <2. The mass spe…

Virus-Mediated Fate of Antimicrobial Resistance Genes in Livestock Manure Composting.

Composting mitigates the global burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in livestock manure, yet the viral biosphere's role in resistome dynamics remains a black box. Leveraging a massive global dataset of 420 metagenomes and 42 viromes, we decipher the phage-host evolutionary arms race during ecological succession. While composting reduces total antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), it is bottlenecked by the selective enrichment of thermophilic antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB), which dominate the residual maturation-phase resistome (∼ 60%). Among 106,387 identified viral operational t…

Enhancing cow manure composting via staged inoculation of functional microbial consortia.

Aerobic composting of cattle manure is often limited by slow humification and long duration. This study evaluated a staged inoculation strategy using phase-specific microbial consortia to enhance composting efficiency. Cow manure and rice straw were composted under four treatments: no inoculant (W), staged commercial EM inoculant (EM), single initial composite inoculant (TF), and staged targeted consortia (YF). The YF treatment achieved the longest thermophilic phase (11 days, peak 62.87 °C), the highest humic substances (122.02 g/kg) and humic acid (92.32 g/kg), and the highest total nitrogen…

Fe2O3 nanoparticles drive enhanced composting humification by modulating bacteriophage-bacteria interactions.

Although bacteria are responsible for decomposing organic matter and forming humic substances (HS) during composting, the role of bacteriophages in carbon metabolism cannot be ignored. In this study, integrated metagenomics and untargeted metabolomic analysis were used to explore the interaction mechanism between bacteriophages and bacteria on the humification process in composting with added Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs). The results showed that Fe2O3 NPs optimized the function of the bacterial community by maintaining a high relative abundance of Bacillota, promoting organic matter degradation, …

Antibiotic degradation dominates the removal of antibiotic resistance genes during composting.

To identify the key hosts involved in horizontal gene transfer (HGT) and vertical gene transfer (VGT) of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and to determine the extent to and ways in which environmental properties contribute to ARG removal, the changes in ARG profile and key hosts during biogas residue and pig manure composting were investigated using metagenomic sequencing coupled with network analysis. Composting significantly reduced the abundances of ARGs other than bacA. Seventy and 41 hosts from Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were associated with HGT and VGT…

[Degradation Characteristics of Antibiotics During Composting of Four Types of Feces].

The widespread use of antibiotics in feed results in a large number of antibiotic residues in feces. Composting technology can degrade these residual antibiotics. A pilot-scale aerobic composting device was used to analyze the antibiotic residues and composting degradation characteristics of four types of feces (maggot manure, chicken manure, pig manure, and cow manure). Results showed that sulfonamides (SAs), fluoroquinolones (FQs), tetracycline (TCs), and macrolides (MAs) were the main antibiotics, and different type of feces had different dominant antibiotics. The contents of FQs and oxytet…

Composting To Inactivate Foodborne Pathogens for Crop Soil Application: A Review.

Compost is organic material that has been degraded into a nutrient-stabilized humus-like substance through intense microbial activity, which can provide essential plant nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus) to aid in the growth of fruits and vegetables. Compost can be generated from animal waste feedstocks; these can contain human pathogens, which can be inactivated through the heat and microbial competition promoted during the composting process. Outbreaks of infections caused by bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella, and Listeria monocytogenes on fruit and vegetable com…

Microbial phylogeny determines transcriptional response of resistome to dynamic composting processes.

BACKGROUND: Animal manure is a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) that pose a potential health risk globally, especially for resistance to the antibiotics commonly used in livestock production (such as tetracycline, sulfonamide, and fluoroquinolone). Currently, the effects of biological treatment (composting) on the transcriptional response of manure ARGs and their microbial hosts are not well characterized. Composting is a dynamic process that consists of four distinct phases that are distinguished by the temperature resulting from microbial activity, namely the mesophilic, therm…

Beyond compost solids: system-wide per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) distribution and oxidisable precursor potential in a full-scale in-vessel composting facility.

Composting of food organics and garden organics (FOGO) supports circular-economy objectives and production of recycled organic products but may facilitate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) occurrence across multiple matrices within processing systems. While PFAS in finished compost have been reported, information on the system-wide distribution of PFAS, including oxidisable precursors, within full-scale composting facilities remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence, distribution, and oxidisable precursor potential of PFAS within a full-scale in-vessel FOGO compo…

Superphosphate-driven low-pH regime reduces greenhouse gas emissions during manure composting.

Additives are widely used to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during manure composting, but whether additive combinations improve mitigation remains unclear. Here, we compared zeolite, ferrous sulfate, superphosphate, and their combinations in cattle manure composting. Superphosphate alone showed the strongest overall mitigation, reducing cumulative CH4 and N2O emissions by 87% and 38%, respectively, relative to the control. The best-performing combined treatment (FL) reduced cumulative CH4 and N2O emissions by 52% and 48%, respectively, indicating that FL performed better for N2O, wher…

Compost microbiomes as reservoirs of cellulolytic microorganisms for cellulosic textile degradation.

Cellulosic textiles, constituting over 30% of global fibre production, are biodegradable but remain challenging to recycle at scale owing to their high crystallinity, chemical finishes, and heterogeneous waste streams. Although microorganisms drive cellulose turnover in natural ecosystems, their potential for transforming anthropogenic cellulosic waste remains largely unexplored. In this study, composting was evaluated both as a sustainable approach to textile biodegradation and a reservoir of cellulolytic microorganisms with biotechnological potential. Biodegradation assays of cotton and lyoc…
