Condylomata acuminata are benign epidermal proliferations caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Recent epidemiological data have shown that HPV infection is the most common sexually transmitted disease. Some HPV types are considered to be potentially oncogenic. Therefore, effective examinations and treatment of both sexual partners are important in all cases. The laser is an increasingly popular modality for the treatment of condylomata acuminata. We present our results on 45 patients treated with the carbon dioxide or neodymium: YAG laser for penile, meatal or intraurethral condylomata. Using an indirect immunoperoxidase method and a panel of monoclonal antibodies, anogenital warts removed from 86 individuals (28 heterosexual men, 47 homosexual men and 11 women) were studied. A constant feature was the presence of a stromal infiltrate of lymphocytes, in which CD4+ and CD8+ cells appeared in a ratio of about 5:1. A case is reported in which condylomata acuminata arose in a McIndoe neovagina. Histopathologic and virologic evidence are provided to support the characterization of these lesions as benign warty processes secondary to human papillomavirus-6. Factors influencing viral site specificity are discussed.
