Association between Financial Conflicts of Interest and International Labor Office Classifications for Black Lung Disease.

Rationale: The U.S. Department of Labor administers the Federal Black Lung Program (FBLP), an administrative system charged with managing claims by coal miners for workers' compensation for totally disabling coal mine dust lung disease. Specific case reports have raised concern that financial conflicts of interest (COIs) may systematically bias physicians when they are classifying chest X-rays (CXRs) for the absence, presence, and severity of pneumoconiosis. Objectives: To evaluate the direction and magnitude of association between financial COIs of physicians participating in the FBLP and int

Predictive genetic testing for neurodegenerative conditions: how should conflicting interests within families be managed?

Predictive genetic testing for a neurodegenerative condition in one individual in a family may have implications for other family members, in that it can reveal their genetic status. Herein a complex clinical case is explored where the testing wish of one family member was in direct conflict to that of another. The son of a person at 50% risk of an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative condition requested testing to reveal his genetic status. The main reason for the request was if he had the familial mutation, he and his partner planned to utilise preimplantation genetic diagnosis to prevent hi

Financial conflicts of interest and their association with outcome and quality of fibromyalgia drug therapy randomized controlled trials.

AIMS: To evaluate the association of financial conflicts of interest (FCOI) with the characteristics, outcome and reported methodological quality of fibromyalgia drug therapy randomized controlled trials (FM-RCTs). METHODS: A cross-sectional study of original, parallel-group, drug therapy FM-RCTs published between 1997 and 2011 from Medline and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials was conducted. Two reviewers independently assessed each RCT for funding source, authors' FCOI(s), study characteristics, reporting of methodological measures important for internal validity and outcome (p

Potential for conflict of interest in the evaluation of suspected adverse drug reactions: use of cerivastatin and risk of rhabdomyolysis.

CONTEXT: In recent years, US patients have increasingly been the first to receive new medications, some of which are subsequently discovered to have suspected adverse drug reactions (SADRs). As a result, the challenge of early detection has largely shifted to the US postmarketing systems. OBJECTIVE: To review the association between the use of cerivastatin sodium and the risk of rhabdomyolysis in an effort to illustrate the operation and limitations of the current US postmarketing safety-surveillance system. DATA SOURCES AND SELECTION: For the published literature, we used previous reviews a

Surrogate Wars: The "Best Interest Values" Hierarchy & End-of-Life Conflicts with Surrogate Decision-Makers.

Conflicts involving end-of-life care between healthcare providers (HCPs) and surrogate decision-makers (SDMs) have received sustained attention for more than a quarter of a century, with early studies demonstrating a frequency of HCP-SDM conflict in ICUs ranging from 32-78% of all admissions (Abbott et al. 2001; Breen et al. 2001; Studdert et al. 2003; Azoulay et al. 2009). More recent studies not only acknowledge the persistence of clinical conflict in end-of-life care (Leland et al. 2017), but they have begun to focus on the ways in which these conflicts escalate to verbal or physical violen

Conflict of interest: use of pyrethroids and amidines against tsetse and ticks in zoonotic sleeping sickness endemic areas of Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Caused by trypanosomes and transmitted by tsetse flies, Human African Trypanosomiasis and bovine trypanosomiasis remain endemic across much of rural Uganda where the major reservoir of acute human infection is cattle. Following elimination of trypanosomes by mass trypanocidal treatment, it is crucial that farmers regularly apply pyrethroid-based insecticides to cattle to sustain parasite reductions, which also protect against tick-borne diseases. The private veterinary market is divided between products only effective against ticks (amidines) and those effective against both ticks

Relationship Between Conflict of Interest and Reported Outcomes After Upper Extremity Nerve Reconstruction Using Acellular Nerve Allografts: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Acellular nerve allografts (ANAs) are increasingly used for peripheral nerve repair. However, the effect of industry sponsorship on reported outcomes remains unclear. This review evaluates functional outcomes following upper extremity nerve reconstruction with ANAs, stratified by conflict of interest (COI). METHODS: A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-guided search of MEDLINE, PubMed, and Embase identified clinical studies using ANAs. Data extracted included study design, patient age, nerve gap length, outcome measures (Medical Research Council C…

Retraction and correction of scientific articles due to conflicts of interest: a cross‑sectional analysis of the retraction watch database.

BACKGROUND: Conflicts of interest (CoI) can undermine trust in scientific publishing, yet empirical evidence on how often CoI lead to editorial action and how journals respond remains limited. This study aimed to characterise the frequency, patterns, and editorial handling of CoI‑related notices in the scholarly literature using an openly available, multidisciplinary dataset. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive cross‑sectional analysis of publicly available records from the Retraction Watch (RW) database, accessed via Crossref, from inception to 23 April 2026. All editorial notices in which C

From Approval to Evidence: Device Regulation, Long-Term Outcomes, and Conflicts of Interest in Metabolic Bariatric Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Device-based innovation in metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) has proliferated under evidentiary standards that differ substantially from those for pharmaceuticals. This review examines the lifecycle of MBS devices, from regulatory approval to long-term outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a structured literature search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus for English-language publications from January 1990 through May 2026, supplemented by regulatory database searches (FDA, EUDAMED) updated to manuscript submission. Five device categories representing distinct regulatory pathways were

Requesting conflicts of interest declarations from the European Medicines Agency: 3-year follow-up status.

AIMS: We have previously described the European Medicines Agency's (EMA) and the US Food and Drug Administration's guidelines, each for a specific psychiatric indication, on how to design pivotal drug trials used in new drug applications. Here, we report on our efforts over 3 years to retrieve conflicts of interest declarations from EMA. We wanted to assess potential internal industry influence judged as the proportion of guideline committee members with industry conflicts of interest. METHODS: We submitted Freedom of Information requests in February 2020 to access EMA's lists of committee me

Evaluation of Financial Conflicts of Interest Among Physician-Authors of American College of Rheumatology Clinical Practice Guidelines.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) underpin patient care, and ideally authors of these guidelines would be free from outside inf … t industry payments. Nonetheless, a substantial proportion of the money received was not disclosed. Conflict of interest disclosure is a bare minimum requirement, and more permanent solutions may include divestiture or inclusion of more nonconflicted authors.

Local Government Stakeholder Perceptions of Legitimacy and Conflict of Interest: The Alcohol Industry and the "Drink Free Days" Campaign in England.

BACKGROUND: Industry involvement in alcohol policy is highly contentious. The Drink Free Days (DFD) campaign (2018- 2019) run by Public Health England (PHE), an executive agency of government, and Drinkaware, an industry-funded 'alcohol education charity' to encourage middle-aged drinkers to abstain from drinking on some days was criticised for perceived industry involvement. We examine the extent to which the DFD campaign was supported by local-authority Directors of Public Health (DPHs) in England - which have a statutory remit for promoting population health within their locality - and thei

Have conflicts of interest in manual therapy trials for low back pain been transparent? A meta-epidemiological review.

IMPORTANCE: Accurate disclosure of conflicts of interest (COI) is vital for trust and transparency in clinical research, but few studies have evaluated these disclosures in the manual therapy literature. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim was to review study-disclosed COIs in manual therapy trials for low back pain (LBP) and compare them with those discovered by external searches. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, CINAHL, CENTRAL, and PEDro were searched for trials investigating manual therapy for nonspecific LBP published between 2000 and 2025. STUDY SELECTION: Trials were included if joint mobilization/manip

Conflicts of Interest Transparency, Study Outcomes, and Risk of Bias in Myopia Controlled Trials: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

TOPIC: To determine whether the transparency of conflicts of interest (COI) declarations is associated with study outcomes and methodological quality in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of myopia controlled interventions. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Myopia control practice is guided largely by RCT evidence, much of which involves industry participation. Variability in the transparency of COI disclosures may influence how such evidence is interpreted for clinical decision-making. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were systematically searched from inception to October 6,

Systematic review of Aedes aegypti control trials suggests publication bias related to author disclosure of conflicts of interest.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes transmit multiple arboviruses, including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever, resulting in a large global disease burden. Vector control remains the key strategy to prevent transmission due to the absence of widely available vaccines or treatments. Many studies evaluate control approaches, yet only a subset are published in peer-reviewed journals. One potential contributor to selective reporting, or publication bias, could be a conflict of interest (COI), defined as employment by a for-profit company conducting the trial, or a financial interest tie…

Why addressing conflicts of interest is essential to progress in reducing commercially driven health harms: Lessons from tobacco.

Globally and in the UK, significant progress has been made in tackling the harms of tobacco use. This was enabled by addressing the fundamental conflict between the tobacco industry's interests and those of the public, including by rejecting partnerships with the tobacco industry. Conflicts of interest (COIs), like those identified in tobacco control, exist in other areas of public health, yet governments, including the UK, continue to work in partnership with other health-harming industries, including alcohol, ultra-processed food and gambling, despite evidence that partnership approaches whe

[Conflicts of interest in scientific publications and possible consequences : A critical analysis using the example of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)].

Technological advancements in endourology rely on close collaboration between medical expertise and industrial research. While this symbiosis is essential for medical progress, it also raises potential conflicts of interest. Using the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) as an example, this study examines various mechanisms through which industry influences scientific evidence. These include selective study design, industry-sponsored educational events, and direct financial ties between industry and medical professionals. Case studies of Aquablation (ProCePT BioRobotics, San Jose CA
