Microbiological features of acute bacterial conjunctivitis in a central Italian area.

The study aims to identify bacteria causing conjunctivitis in a central Italian area and to analyze chemosusceptibility. From 2005 to 2006, 91 conjunctival swabs were collected from acute conjunctivitis cases and screened for common bacteria and fungi. Susceptibility tests were performed on isolates. Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae amounted to 86.2%. Overall, 100% of strains were susceptible to chloramphenicol and 96.6% to quinolones. Conversely, 20.7% of isolates were tetracycline-resistant and, even if all Gram negative isolates were susceptible to

Contact lenses with dual drug delivery for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis.

Currently, bacterial conjunctivitis is treated by frequent administration of antibiotic eye drop solutions, which is tedious and patient noncompliant. Contact lenses could be ideal medical devices to sustain the release of ophthalmic drugs, but the incorporation of the latter can alter the optical and physical properties of the lenses. In addition, many contact lens users have reported the pink eye syndrome, making them unsuitable as ocular medical devices. In the present study, we have designed a novel type of lenses containing semi-circular rings loaded with moxifloxacin HCl (a broad spectru

Use of eyepatches in phototherapy: effects on conjunctival bacterial pathogens and conjunctivitis.

We conducted a randomized controlled trial to determine the effects of eye occlusion on the risk of eye infection in full term newborn infants receiving phototherapy. Among 102 infants whose eyes were occluded with eyepatches, pathogens were isolated from 50 eyes of 33 infants. The positive isolation rate was significantly higher than that of a group of control infants (n = 101) whose eyes were protected by a headbox made of light-proof plastics. Among the latter group pathogens were detected in 22 eyes of 14 infants. In addition significantly more infants in the eyepatches group had purulent

The evolution of antibiotic therapy for bacterial conjunctivitis and keratitis: 1970-2000.

The editors of this Festschrift asked us to review the use of antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis and keratitis over the past 25 years, a period coinciding with the life of the Castroviejo Corneal Society. We believe it is more appropriate to begin our review in the late 1960s. about the time that experimental and clinical studies and algorithms for the clinical care derived from these studies helped shape a more rigorous approach to therapy. Those years saw the introduction of antibiotics that were adapted for ophthalmic use, many of which are still being used today. We

[Clinical investigation of 0.3% levofloxacin eyedrops on the treatment of cases with acute bacterial conjunctivitis and bacterial keratitis].

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of 0.3% levofloxacin eyedrops on the treatment of acute bacterial conjunctivitis and bacterial keratitis. METHODS: The patients were randomly divided into treated group and control group. They were given 0.3% levofloxacin and 0.3% ofloxacin eyedrops respectively. RESULTS: From April to December in 1999, 132 cases were enrolled in the study. It showed that there was no significant difference between two drops in the cure and effective rates, but the mean cure day of keratitis in levofloxacin group was significantly shorter than that in ofloxacin group. Outbreak of bacterial conjunctivitis at a college--New Hampshire, January-March, 2002.

During February 1-14, 2002, approximately 100 students presented to a New Hampshire college's student health service with clinical signs of conjunctivitis (Figure 1). The cause of conjunctivitis was initially thought to be viral. However, because of the high number of cases, eye cultures were collected from 12 consecutive students; Streptococcus pneumoniae was isolated from cultures of all 12 students. The medical director of the student health service notified the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services about the outbreak and on February 22, the state health department requested

A potential link between bacterial pathogens and allergic conjunctivitis by dendritic cells.

The association and mechanism of bacteria linking to the allergic inflammation have not been well elucidated. This study was to explore a potential link between bacterial pathogens and allergic conjunctivitis by dendritic cells (DCs). Bone marrow-derived DCs from BALB/c and MyD88 knockout mice were treated with or without bacterial pathogens or thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP). Two murine models of the topical challenge with LPS or flagellin and experimental allergic conjunctivitis (EAC) were used for in vivo study. The mRNA expression was determined by reverse transcription and real time P

Topical lomefloxacin twice daily compared with fucidic acid in acute bacterial conjunctivitis.

Forty-five patients with presumed acute bacterial conjunctivitis were treated in an investigator-masked randomized multicenter study with either lomefloxacin 0.3% or fucidic acid 1% eye drops twice daily. Clinical signs and symptoms were rated by slit-lamp examination and conjunctival swab cultures were performed to evaluate clinical and microbiological efficacy. A total of 57 ocular isolates were tested for susceptibility to nine antibiotics. A significant decrease in clinical symptomatology was achieved by both treatments with a gradual improvement over the treatment period of 7-9 days. Bact

Clinical Effect of Bacterial Suspension in Patients with Moderate-to-Severe Allergic Conjunctivitis.

Background/Objectives: Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is a frequent inflammatory ocular surface disease that significantly affects quality of life, particularly in children. Current treatments mainly provide temporary symptom relief and often require prolonged use. Bacterial suspensions have emerged as potential immunomodulatory treatments for other allergies but have yet to be completely explored for ocular allergies. Our study's objective was to describe the clinical, ophthalmological, and quality-of-life changes in patients with AC treated with a bacterial suspension (BS) as complementary the

The role of topical moxifloxacin, a new antibacterial in Europe, in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis.

This article discusses current practice in the treatment of conjunctivitis and how the use of topical moxifloxacin can increase therapeutic effectiveness, reduce treatment failures and, consequently, be cost effective and reduce the societal burden of the disorder. Current practice and effectiveness data were derived from the literature. Data on healthcare utilization as a result of treatment failure were collected by survey and the cost of treatment was defined using national costings. A decision-analytic model to assess cost effectiveness was developed and the impact on the healthcare budget
