Abduction contracture of the hip (frog-leg deformity) is caused by contracture of the gluteus maximus muscle. A simple operation consisting of complete detachment of involved fibrous portions of the gluteus maximus from the greater trochanter to the ischial tuberosity is sufficient to release the contracture and enable the patient to squat without abducting the hips. Possible sciatic nerve injury is avoided by a periosteal elevator inserted between the muscle and the greater trochanter before division of the muscle. All patients showed marked improvement, and complications were virtually nonex…

Bladder neck contracture (BNC) is a well-described complication of the surgical treatment of benign and malignant prostate conditions. Nevertheless, etiologies of BNC development are highly dependent on the primary treatment modality undertaken with BNC also occurring after pelvic radiation. The treatment options for BNC can range from simple, office-based dilation procedures to more invasive, complex abdomino-perineal reconstructive surgery. Although numerous strategies have been described, a patient-specific approach is usually necessary in the management of these complex patients. In this r…

Congenital flexion contracture of ulnar digits is a rare entity with few cases reported in medical literature. This condition is often misdiagnosed as Volkmann ischemic contracture as both have similar presentation. The patient history, physical examination, radiological investigation, and intra-operative findings can differentiate these 2 conditions clearly. A 14-year-old female presented to a tertiary care hospital with flexion deformity of the left long, ring, and little fingers without neurological deficit since she was 3 years old. Patient had decreased handspan with difficulty in graspin…

A retrospective study involving 2027 patients with a limited range of motion of the shoulder in the period from 1970 to 1987 is described. Of these, 1219 patients (60%) were diagnosed as having frozen shoulder, with the highest incidence occurring in patients aged 50-60 years. The mechanism involved in the contracture is complicated. At first, the movement of the greater tuberosity at the subacromial level (also called the subacromial secondary joint) is limited due to bursitis. The external rotation of the upper arm then decreases, and the long rotator muscles contract. The relationship betwe…

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical features, radiologic findings, differential diagnosis, and surgical treatment of a congenital flexion deformity of the middle, ring, and little fingers. The cause of the condition is the aberrant origin of the flexor digitorum profundus, leading to a congenital contracture of the ulnar digits.
METHODS: We reviewed 8 patients with congenital contracture of the ulnar digits. The mean age at the time of surgery was 14 years. An examination revealed a flexion contracture of the middle, ring, and small fingers. Plain radiographs, 3-dimensional computed tomography,…

Scar flexion contracture of fingers is one of the most serious consequences of hand burns and patient disability after burn. Many kinds of reconstructive techniques are currently used and new procedures are being investigated. The author presents a new method of finger contracture reconstruction developed in the process of burn reconstructive operations on hands of over a thousand patients. Finger flexion contractures are caused by a semilunar fold, both sheets of which are scars. The sheets have a surface deficiency in length, which causes a contracture, and excess of skin in width, which all…
