Assessing Pediatric Sedation Using Patient-Centered Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate pediatric dental sedation success using patient-centered outcomes overall and for behavior, safety, and treatment. METHODS: A cross-sectional study used existing clinical data of children 24 to 60 months of age undergoing first-time sedations (2015-2020) at a children's hospital. Outcomes included behavior success (Frankl score 3-4), safety success (vital signs maintained within 2 SDs of age- and sex-based norms), and treatment success. Overall success was defined as success in at least 2 subcategories. Descriptive statistics, bivariate comparisons, and multiple variabl

Promotion of cooperation induced by appropriate payoff aspirations in a small-world networked game.

Based on learning theory, we adopt a stochastic learning updating rule to investigate the evolution of cooperation in the Prisoner's Dilemma game on Newman-Watts small-world networks with different payoff aspiration levels. Interestingly, simulation results show that the mechanism of intermediate aspiration promoting cooperation resembles a resonancelike behavior, and there exists a ping-pong vibration of cooperation for large payoff aspiration. To explain the nontrivial dependence of the cooperation level on the aspiration level, we investigate the fractions of links, provide analytical resul

Rules of social exchange: game theory, individual differences and psychopathology.

Human social interaction is rarely guided by pure reason. Instead, in situation in which humans have the option to cooperate, to defect, or to punish non-cooperative behavior of another person, they quite uniformly tend to reciprocate "good" deeds, reject unfair proposals, and try to enforce obedience to social rules and norms in non-cooperative individuals ("free-riders"), even if the punishment incurs costs to the punisher. Abundant research using various game theoretical approaches has examined these apparently irrational human behaviors. This article reviews the evolutionary rationale of h

Musical engagement as a duet of tight synchrony and loose interpretability.

Joint engagement in music often facilitates positive social interaction, effectively shifting participants' perspective from the individual to the collective. The result is tight coordination and uniformity between participants, but at the same time, also remarkable flexibility and creativity. How does music achieve such a fine balance between the strict alignment necessary for coordination, and the substantial latitude necessary for experimentation? To address this question, I propose to analyze joint music engagement within the tight-loose theoretical framework broadly used in the social sci

Developmental control of foraging and social behavior by the Drosophila neuropeptide Y-like system.

Animals display stereotyped behavioral modifications during development, but little is known about how genes and neural circuits are regulated to turn on/off behaviors. Here we report that Drosophila neuropeptide F (dNPF), a human NPY homolog, coordinates larval behavioral changes during development. The brain expression of npf is high in larvae attracted to food, whereas its downregulation coincides with the onset of behaviors of older larvae, including food aversion, hypermobility, and cooperative burrowing. Loss of dNPF signaling in young transgenic larvae led to the premature display of be

Cooperation needs an audience: being seen increases cooperation in public-goods decisions.

Transparency is often assumed to promote cooperation because it reveals what others are doing. Yet in social dilemmas, transparency also makes one's own behavior visible and therefore socially evaluable. Across two online experiments (N = 369), we disentangled these two structural facets of transparency - access to individuated information about others' behavior and the observability of one's own behavior - in a repeated public-goods dilemma framed around health-related collective goods. Participants decided how much of a private endowment to invest in a shared resource while the cooperation l

Many-eyes and sentinels in selfish and cooperative groups.

Collective vigilance describes how animals in groups benefit from the predator detection efforts of others. Empirical observations typically find either a many-eyes strategy with all (or many) group members maintaining a low level of individual vigilance, or a sentinel strategy with one (or a few) individuals maintaining a high level of individual vigilance while others do not. With an analytical treatment that makes minimal assumptions, we show that these two strategies are alternative solutions to the same adaptive problem of balancing the costs of predation and vigilance. Which strategy is

Patient-cooperative strategies for robot-aided treadmill training: first experimental results.

Task-oriented repetitive movements can improve motor performance in patients with neurological or orthopaedic lesions. The application of robotics and automation technology can serve to assist, enhance, evaluate, and document neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation. This paper deals with the application of "patient-cooperative" techniques to robot-aided gait rehabilitation of neurological disorders. We define patient-cooperative to mean that, during movement, the technical system takes into account the patient's intention and voluntary efforts rather than imposing any predefined movements o

The costs of impartial beneficence: The interaction between scenarios type and kinship distance in impartial beneficence moral judgment.

Prior research suggests that people are more likely to trust non-utilitarian agents over utilitarian ones. However, previous studies on utilitarian consequences have primarily focused on instrumental harm, often neglecting the aspect of impartial beneficence. This study explored the effect of impartial beneficence on bystander cooperation behavior and its boundary conditions through three progressive experiments. The results indicate that: (1) Impartial judgment reduces bystander cooperation behavior compared with partial judgment; (2) The moderating effects of both the scenarios type and kins

Predictor variables of happiness and its connection with risk and protective factors for health.

Great thinkers, philosophers, scientists, and artists from History have often been concerned about one of the most important elements of life: happiness. The study had four goals: (1) To analyze possible differences in feelings of happiness as a function of sex and age; (2) To explore the relations of happiness with risk factors (psychopathological symptoms, behavior problems) and protective factors (self-concept-self-esteem, cooperative behavior, social skills) for health; (3) To identify predictor variables of happiness; and (4) To explore whether self-esteem mediates the relationship betwee

MDMA Increases Cooperation and Recruitment of Social Brain Areas When Playing Trustworthy Players in an Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma.

Social decision-making is fundamental for successful functioning and can be affected in psychiatric illness and by serotoninergic modulation. The Prisoner's Dilemma is the archetypal paradigm to model cooperation and trust. However, the effect of serotonergic enhancement is poorly characterized, and its influence on the effect of variations in opponent behavior unknown. To address this, we conducted a study investigating how the serotonergic enhancer 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) modulates behavior and its neural correlates during an iterated Prisoner's Dilemma with both trustworth

Dimensions of child maltreatment and children's adjustment: contributions of developmental timing and subtype.

This investigation examined the dimensions of developmental timing, subtype, and severity of maltreatment and their relations with child adaptation. The 814 children who participated in a summer day camp, 492 of whom were maltreated and 322 of whom were nonmaltreated comparison children, were assessed by camp counselors on their internalizing and externalizing symptomatology, aggressive, withdrawn, and cooperative behavior, and on personality dimensions of ego resiliency and ego control, and were rated by peers on disruptive, aggressive, and cooperative behavior. The severity within each subty

Co-evolution of conditional cooperation and social norm.

The co-evolution of conditional cooperation and social norms has garnered significant attention, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Social norms result from empirical expectations, individual expectations of group behavior, and normative expectations, the population's expectations of individual behavior. Aligning these expectations aids in norm formation, but diverse individual reactions to observed behavior and their sensitivity to norm conformity can be challenging. In our study, the agents are initially endowed with diverse conditional expectations, which mirror their anticipatio

Children's use of communicative intent in the selection of cooperative partners.

Within the animal kingdom, human cooperation represents an outlier. As such, there has been great interest across a number of fields in identifying the factors that support the complex and flexible variety of cooperation that is uniquely human. The ability to identify and preferentially interact with better social partners (partner choice) is proposed to be a major factor in maintaining costly cooperation between individuals. Here we show that the ability to engage in flexible and effective partner choice behavior can be traced back to early childhood. Specifically, across two studies, we demo

Experiential Learning to Enhance Global Health Collaboration and Student Opportunity.

Students often seek opportunities to enrich their classroom learning. Providing students the chance to engage in research studies or global health projects allows for experiential enrichment. However, the impact on partners and partner sites, financial implications, and equity of student opportunity, as well as the logistical burden potentially placed on multiple parties, all need to be considered. If challenges are minimized, students can make meaningful contributions to projects, be a catalyst for partner engagement, and allow for formative learning.

Collaboration for the control of cysticercosis/echinococcosis in Vietnam.

A collaborative international project to control cysticercosis and cystic echinococcosis in Vietnam began in 2000. The project has drawn together the National Institute of Malariology, Parasitology and Entomology (NIMPE), Vietnam, and the WHO (Hanoi). Other contributors are the Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine (PLITM) in Belgium, the University of Salford, England, and the Asahikawa Medical College (AMC). Based on my experience of similar collaborations on cysticercosis in Indonesia, I offer a brief explanation of what my group at AMC has been doing and what we can do. The most im

When do stereotypes undermine indirect reciprocity?

Social reputations provide a powerful mechanism to stimulate human cooperation, but observing individual reputations can be cognitively costly. To ease this burden, people may rely on proxies such as stereotypes, or generalized reputations assigned to groups. Such stereotypes are less accurate than individual reputations, and so they could disrupt the positive feedback between altruistic behavior and social standing, undermining cooperation. How do stereotypes impact cooperation by indirect reciprocity? We develop a theoretical model of group-structured populations in which individuals are ass

Changes in cooperation and self-other differentiation during the second year.

Cooperation in peer interaction emerges during the second half of the second year. A consideration of the skills and knowledge entailed in these early forms of cooperation suggests that young children's emerging ability to differentiate self from other as causal agents may relate to their ability to coordinate behavior with age mates toward a common goal. Children at 12, 18, 24, and 30 months were observed in same-age, same-sex dyads (8 dyads per age) while attempting to solve a simple cooperation problem. They were also individually administered an elicited imitation task used to index decent

From coordination to normativity in social tinkering.

The social tinkering model convincingly explains how local coordination processes give rise to shared practices and conventions. However, it remains unclear whether such mechanisms suffice to account for normativity in the strong sense. Using contemporary language models as a comparative case, coordination alone does not appear sufficient to generate normatively binding standards. The transition to normativity likely requires additional conditions - such as public accountability, sanctions, and stable social roles - that merit more explicit integration within the framework.
