[Zona of the cranial nerves. Current aspects].

Recurrence of the chickenpox virus, herpes zoster localizes in cranial nerves in 30% of cases, with a predilection for the ophthalmic nerve. In young patients, clinicians must search for a herpes zoster-HIV association as well as oculomotor proprioception impairment in herpes zoster ophthalmicus. Enhanced MRI allows good objective view of the facial nerve lesions in herpes zoster facial paralysis. Finally, the gravity and aftereffects of cephalic herpes zoster can be decreased by an appropriate therapeutic approach.

Cranial Nerve Stimulation for Olfaction (Cranial Nerve 1).

Like sensory maps in other systems, the sense of smell has an organizational structure based on converging projections of olfactory receptor neurons containing unique odorant receptors onto the olfactory bulb in synaptic aggregations termed glomeruli. This organizational structure provides the potential for electrical stimulation and restoration of smell. Prior animal and human studies support the feasibility of an olfactory stimulation device, encouraging ongoing work in development of olfactory implants.

Nerves of Steel: a Low-Cost Method for 3D Printing the Cranial Nerves.

Steady-state free precession (SSFP) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can demonstrate details down to the cranial nerve (CN) level. High-resolution three-dimensional (3D) visualization can now quickly be performed at the workstation. However, we are still limited by visualization on flat screens. The emerging technologies in rapid prototyping or 3D printing overcome this limitation. It comprises a variety of automated manufacturing techniques, which use virtual 3D data sets to fabricate solid forms in a layer-by-layer technique. The complex neuroanatomy of the CNs may be better understood and d

Cranial nerves involvement in craniosynostosis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The improved management of craniosynostosis has let emerge concomitant anatomical, functional and clinical features that are frequently faced later in life (especially by syndromic patients) and might variably encompass the cranial nerves due to stenosis of bone foramina, abnormal intracranial pressure, or anomalous gene-driven development. Clinical consequences vary according to the affected nerves, the severity and the pathogenesis of nerve involvement but also might depend on early appropriate treatment. Vision, smell and hearing, but also feeding, swallowing and facial mimic or…

Cavernous malformations isolated from cranial nerves: Unexpected diagnosis?

OBJECTIVES: Cranial nerves (CN) cavernous malformations (CMs) are lesions that are isolated from the CNs. The authors present three cases of CN CMs, for which MR was demonstrated to be critical for management, and surgical resection produced good outcomes for the patients. Surgical removal is the recommended course of action to restore or preserve neurological function and to eliminate the risk of future haemorrhage. However, the anatomical location and the complexity of nearby neural structures can make these lesions difficult to access and remove. In this study, the authors review the litera…

The lower cranial nerves: IX, X, XI, XII.

The lower cranial nerves innervate the pharynx and larynx by the glossopharyngeal (CN IX) and vagus (CN X) (mixed) nerves, and provide motor innervation of the muscles of the neck by the accessory nerve (CN XI) and the tongue by the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII). The symptomatology provoked by an anomaly is often discrete and rarely in the forefront. As with all cranial nerves, the context and clinical examinations, in case of suspicion of impairment of the lower cranial nerves, are determinant in guiding the imaging. In fact, the impairment may be located in the brain stem, in the peribulbar cis…

[Cranial nerves - spectrum of inflammatory and tumorous changes].

Inflammatory processes as well as primary and secondary tumorous changes may involve cranial nerves causing neurological deficits. In addition to neurologists, ENT physicians, ophthalmologists and maxillofacial surgeons, radiologists play an important role in the investigation of patients with cranial nerve symptoms. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allow the depiction of the cranial nerve anatomy and pathological neural changes. This article briefly describes the imaging techniques in MDCT and MRI and is dedicated to the radiological p…

Cranial Nerves III, IV, and VI: Oculomotor Function.

Motor activity affecting the direction of gaze, the position of the eyelids, and the size of the pupils are served by cranial nerves III, IV, and VI. Unusual oculomotor activity is often encountered in psychiatric patients and can be quite informative. Evaluation techniques include casual observation and simple tests that require no equipment in addition to the sophisticated methods used in specialty clinics and research labs. This article reviews pupil size, extraocular movements, nystagmus, lid retraction, lid lag, and ptosis. Beyond screening for diseases and localizing lesions, these tests…

Multinevritis of cranial nerves following inhalation of toxins.

Cranial multineuropathy is an uncommon occurrence. We observed two cases of multinevritis of the cranial nerves which had many features in common: acute onset after toxic inhalation, occurrence of neuroparaxic block, and rapid resolution after corticosteroid therapy. We believe physicians should be aware that multinevritis of the cranial nerves may be related to acute exposure to toxic substances. Missing this diagnosis could lead to a delay in therapy.

[Imaging cranial nerves with inframillimetric T2-weighted MRI].

Fifty files were evaluated to determine the normal anatomy of the cranial nerves. All the cranial nerves were studied including the labyrinth, in different planes with a 3DFT-CISS imaging technique. The 3DFT-CISS is especially interesting to study cranial nerves because of the excellent contrast with CSF-fluid and the possibility of thin sections. It might be essential for the diagnosis of neuralgia and cranial nerves paralysis.

Experimental observation of particulate flow along cranial nerves.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the communicative routes via the cranial nerves among the middle ear, the auditory tube, the inner ear, and the subarachnoid space under nearly physiological conditions. Various volumes of Indian ink were slowly injected into the facial nerve trunk of rabbits at the stylomastoid foramen, then serial sections of the heads were observed under the light microscope. This study yielded the following results: (i) Indian ink penetrated into the subarachnoid space through the internal auditory canal and/or the jugular foramen along the nerve sheaths of the …

Magnetic resonance in the study of cranial nerves.

The course of cranial nerves was studied by means of magnetic resonance (MR), which allowed a multiplane visualization of the investigated structures. The obtained results showed that MR was an excellent method for visualization of the optic, trigeminal, facial and acoustica nerves. The oculomotor and the abducent nerves were detectable only in some regions where the contrast with the surrounding structures was greater. The glossopharingeus, vegus and accessory nerves were identifiable only in the first tract of emergency from the encephalic trunk and they could no be distinguished separately.…

[Involvement of the cranial nerves disclosing multiple myeloma].

Diseases of cranial nerves are very seldom associated with multiple myeloma. However, their occurrence as a harbinger of multiple myeloma seems to bear a particular significance and is worth mentioning. In the present paper, we discuss two cases in which disorders of cranial nerves heralded Kahler's disease. The patients presented with posterior laterocondylar space and cochleovestibular (otoliquorrhea) syndromes, respectively. We stress the diagnostic problems involved and analyze the pathogenesis of diseases of the nervous system associated with multiple myeloma. Diseases of cranial nerves a…

MR of acoustic neuromas--relationship to cranial nerves.

In this report, the relationship of acoustic neuromas to the adjacent cranial nerves is discussed. On T1-weighted images, the trigeminal nerve was detected in all 13 cases. Mild to marked compression of these nerves by the tumors was observed in eight cases. The extent of compression did not always correspond to the clinical symptoms. In four cases with a maximum tumor diameter of 2 cm or less, the 7th and 8th cranial nerves were identified. There was no facial palsy in these patients. Two patients with a tumor diameter of more than 2 cm also had no facial palsy. All patients, including those …

Afferent interactions of cranial nerves involved in ingestion.

Substantial behavioral evidence implicates visceral afferent activity in the regulation of feeding behavior. One mechanism often suggested for this influence involves visceral afferent activity interacting with oral or gustatory afferent activity. This brief review summarizes the anatomical and electrophysiological evidence that indicates that such interactions might in fact take place. The available evidence for interactions between visceral and gustatory afferent messages is far from convincing, but perhaps only because the issue has seldom been addressed. The most direct tests suggested by
