OBJECTIVE: The authors studied 75 male infants with meningomyelocele (MMC) to analyse the association with cryptorchidism.
METHODS: All infants were diagnosed at birth and surgically corrected after 24-48 h. Testes were classified undescended in accordance with Kaplan. The associated malformations, the exact levels of the lesion (surgical report) and the presence of hydrocephalus and the cremasteric reflex have each been assessed.

Chromosome analysis was performed in 160 patients with cryptorchidism. Chromosomal anomalies were found in 7 patients (4.4%). The incidence of chromosomal abnormalities was not significantly different between patients with bilateral or unilateral cryptorchidism. Of 7 patients, 1 had sex chromosomal aberration, 2 had marker chromosome and 4 had autosomal anomalies. OBJECTIVE: This report underscores the higher risk of testicular cancer in cryptorchidism.
METHODS/RESULTS: A patient undergoing evaluation for sterility, who was submitted to orchidopexy 15 years earlier for cryptorchidism, developed a seminoma-like tumor one year following a testicular biopsy that was compatible with testicular atrophy, but with no signs of dysplasia. The literature on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment is briefly reviewed.

A 28-year-old man was admitted for removal of an undescented testis. The operation was performed via the laparoscopic approach. Laparoscopy has for years been recommended for locating the intraabdominal testis. Therapeutic laparoscopy is gaining increased popularity and this brief report shows that an intraabdominal testis can be easily removed via the laparoscope.

A case of Cryptorchidism involving a father and all his four sons who are product of a nonconsanguineous marriage has been described. From a review of the literature, as well as evidence derived from the family history, it is suggested that the mode of inheritance may be autosomal dominant with incomplete penetrance or multifactorial.

The month of birth of boys undergoing orchidopexy in the Oxfordshire Health District during the years 1974-83 was analysed. A significant seasonal variation with a peak in April was found for those boys operated upon by paediatric surgeons at a young age (0-4). Possible causes of this variation and its relationship to the aetiology of cryptorchidism are discussed.

We surveyed 148 institutionalized male subjects to study the prevalence of cryptorchidism among mentally retarded individuals. Of the patients 121 (81.7 per cent) were profoundly (intelligence quotient 19 or less), 21 severely (20 to 35), 5 moderately (36 to 51) and 1 mildly (65) retarded.
