Emotional Dysregulation and Temperament in Adolescents with Acute Psychiatric Conditions: Gender Differences and the Role of Psychiatric Diagnosis.

Background: Emotional dysregulation (ED) is a transdiagnostic construct implicated in a broad range of psychiatric conditions. However, the influence of gender on ED remains understudied, particularly among adolescents with severe mood and behavioral disorders. Furthermore, few studies have controlled for confounding effects of specific psychiatric diagnoses. Methods: We assessed 182 adolescents (80.8% female; mean age 15.7 years) referred to our clinical institution. Participants completed the Cyclothymic-Hypersensitive Temperament Questionnaire (CHTQ), the Reactivity, Intensity, Polarity, an

The relationship between DSM-III symptom disorders (Axis I) and personality disorders (Axis II) in an outpatient population.

The relationship between symptom disorder and personality disorder according to DSM-III was studied in 289 consecutive outpatients. It was observed that personality disorders occurred frequently among the chronic affective and anxiety disorders. The "dramatic" personality disorders were observed especially frequently among patients with cyclothymic disorder, and the "eccentric" personality disorders among patients with a diagnosis of dysthymic disorder, social phobia and agoraphobia. Dramatic personality disorder was also common among patients with simple phobia. As expected, a close correspon…

Affective Temperament Traits Measured by TEMPS-A and Their Associations with Cognitive Functions among Offspring of Parents with Bipolar Disorder with and without Subthreshold Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, there have been no studies that have examined affective temperament traits in offspring of parents with bipolar disorder (BD). The aim of this study was to identify affective temperamental characteristics and their relationships with cognitive functions in BD offspring. METHODS: A group of BD offspring were enrolled in this study. Subthreshold symptoms were used to categorize participants as either symptomatic offspring (SO) (n=60) or asymptomatic offspring (AO) (n=52). Healthy controls (HCs; n=48) were also enrolled for comparison. We used the Chinese Short Vers

Chemokine alterations in bipolar disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

We aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies examining the levels of chemokines in peripheral blood of patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and healthy controls. Meta-analysis was based on random-effects models with Hedges' g as the effect size estimate. We included 13 eligible studies (1221 BD patients and 663 controls). The following chemokines were analysed: interleukin-8 (IL-8), monocyte-chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), eotaxin-1, eotaxin-2 and interferon-γ-induced protein 10 (IP-10). The levels of IL-8 (N = 8, g = 0.26, 95%CI: 0.11-0.41, p < 0.001), MCP-1 (N = 8,

Affective disorders in a US urban community: the use of research diagnostic criteria in an epidemiological survey.

The current point and lifetime prevalence rates of affective disorders, based on the application of Research Diagnostic Criteria to a US urban community sample, are reported. The affective disorders studied included major and minor depression, mania, hypomania, bipolar I and II, primary and secondary depression, schizo-affective disorder, depressive and cyclothymic personality, and grief reactions. Epidemiologic surveys that include treated and untreated persons to obtain rates of specific psychiatric disorders are needed for scientific purposes and health care planning.

[Depression and manic-depressive disorders].

The two major subtypes of manic-depressive illness are bipolar disorder and recurrent major depressive disorder. Biological data strongly indicate that a significant genetic factor is involved in the development of manic-depressive illness. But, stressful life events, environmental stress and premorbid personality factors may also be involved in other important etiologic factors. Some research data indicate that cyclothymic disorder and temperamental disorders may be considered as mild forms of bipolar disorders so called "subaffective disorders". The identification of clinical or biological f…

Psychiatric diagnoses of treatment-seeking cocaine abusers.

In a sample of 298 cocaine abusers seeking inpatient (n = 149) or outpatient (n = 149) treatment, rates of psychiatric disorders were determined by means of the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Research Diagnostic Criteria. Overall, 55.7% met current and 73.5% met lifetime criteria for a psychiatric disorder other than a substance use disorder. In common with previous reports from clinical samples of cocaine abusers, these overall rates were largely accounted for by major depression, minor bipolar conditions (eg, hypomania, cyclothymic personality), anxiety disorders, antisocial personalit

Emotional and affective temperaments and cigarette smoking in a large sample.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use has been associated with externalized personality traits. Our aim was to evaluate the association of smoking with emotional and affective temperaments in a large sample. METHODS: In this cross-sectional web-based survey, volunteers completed the Combined Emotional and Affective Temperament Scale (CEATS), which assesses emotional (fear, drive, anger, and control) and affective temperaments (e.g. cyclothymic, irritable), and questions about smoking. RESULTS: Among the 5379 subjects (1370 males), there were 60% non-smokers, 17% quitters and 23% current smokers. Non-smoke

Interconnectedness of borderline personality pathology and affective temperaments in patients with mood disorders: a network analysis.

PURPOSE: Mood disorders frequently coexist with borderline personality pathology (BPP), presenting considerable clinical challenges. Affective temperaments (AT) play a role in modulating mood disorders and influence the manifestation of illness. BPP and AT share common characteristics, such as emotional instability, impulsivity, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. However, research on the relationship between BPP and AT remains limited. This study employed network analysis to explore the network structure between BPP and AT in a cohort of patients with mood disorders. MATERIALS A

Utility of TEMPS-A in differentiation between major depressive disorder, bipolar I disorder, and bipolar II disorder.

BACKGROUND: The association between temperament characteristics and mood disorders has gained much attention in recent years. The Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-autoquestionnaire version (TEMPS-A) is a self-rating scale measuring 5 affective temperament dimensions. In this study, we aimed to clarify whether each affective temperament of TEMPS-A is a differentiating factor between major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar I disorder (BD-I), and bipolar II disorder (BD-II), and analyzed the utility of TEMPS-A in their differential diagnosis in a clinical setting. TEMPS-A and long-term lithium response: positive correlation with hyperthymic temperament.

BACKGROUND: Lithium is still regarded as a cornerstone for the long-term treatment of bipolar disorder. The best response to lithium is associated with clinical features of episodic clinical course, complete remission, bipolar family history and low psychiatric comorbidity. However, a specific personality profile for the best lithium response was not estimated so far. Such a possibility occurred with an advent of temperament scale for bipolar disorder and of an ability to quantitatively assess lithium prophylactic response. METHODS: The study was performed on 71 patients with bipolar mood dis

The prevalence of cyclothymia in borderline personality disorder.

Sixty patients with personality disorders were evaluated by several different diagnostic instruments to determine the prevalence of cyclothymia in borderline personality disorder (BPD) and in other personality disorders (OPD). Cyclothymia occurred more frequently in BPD than in OPD, regardless of which diagnostic system was used. In contrast, the prevalence of major, minor, and intermittent depression, hypomania, and bipolar disorder was not significantly different in BPD as compared with OPD. Cyclothymic borderlines and noncyclothymic borderlines could not be distinguished on behavioral or fu

Neural substrates of affective temperaments: An intersubject representational similarity analysis to resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging in nonclinical subjects.

Previous research has suggested that certain types of the affective temperament, including depressive, cyclothymic, hyperthymic, irritable, and anxious, are subclinical manifestations and precursors of mental disorders. However, the neural mechanisms that underlie these temperaments are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to identify the brain regions associated with different affective temperaments. We collected the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from 211 healthy adults and evaluated their affective temperaments using the Temperament Evaluation of

Affective temperament modulates the relationship between physical and psychiatric symptoms during long-COVID: results from the Gemelli against COVID-19 post-acute care service.

BACKGROUND: Affective temperaments represent the substrate of personality that can influence the expression of chronic infectious diseases, including COVID-19 and its sequelae. However, research conducted so far on this topic focused on narrow aspects of psychopathology. AIM: To investigate the effect of affective temperaments on the relationship between physical and psychiatric symptoms in patients with long-COVID. METHODS: The sample consisted of 1513 patients who have been hospitalized for COVID-19 and developed long-COVID. Participants performed a multidisciplinary assessment including p

A three-year longitudinal study of affective temperaments and risk for psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Affective temperaments are presumed to underlie bipolar psychopathology. The TEMPS-A has been widely used to assess affective temperaments in clinical and non-clinical samples. Cross-sectional research supports the association of affective temperaments and mood psychopathology; however, longitudinal research examining risk for the development of bipolar disorders is lacking. The present study examined the predictive validity of affective temperaments, using the TEMPS-A, at a three-year follow-up assessment. METHODS: The study interviewed 112 participants (77% of the original sampl
