By histochemical and electron histochemical methods, NADPH-diaphorase was discovered in neurons and their processes of all ganglia of the central nervous system (CNS) of Cristaria tuberculata. The survival motor neuron (SMN) protein forms cytoplasmic granules when overexpressed. We report here that SMN co-localizes with TIA-1/R and G3BP, protein assemblers of stress granules (SGs), and that SMN is co-immunoprecipitated with TIA-1/R, suggesting that SMN granules are SGs. Formation of SMN granules precedes accumulation of TIA-1/R, indicating that SMN serves as a facilitator of SG formation. Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are characterized by abundant eosinophilic cytoplasmic granules. Based on the hypothesis that canine intracranial GCT is a subtype of meningioma and its cytoplasmic granules are formed through autophagy processes, histopathological and immunohistochemical examination were performed on biopsy samples from 7 cases of canine intracranial GCTs and 15 cases of conventional meningiomas. Seven cutaneous mast cell tumors were identified in 6 geriatric California sea lions (Zalophus californianus). Multiple granular cell tumours occurred diffusely throughout the pleura of an adult German Shepherd Dog. The growths were scattered over the surface of the lungs, mediastinum and diaphragm. Histologically, the masses consisted of plump cords of cells with eosinophilic, weakly PAS-positive cytoplasmic granules. Electron microscopically, the granules consisted of a pleomorphic population of electron-dense granules. The predilection site in the dog is the tongue and this is the first report of an intrathoracic, pleural site of granular cell tumours in the dog.
