Methods for Testing Repellents Against Bed Bugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

Bed bug repellents should not only prevent humans from being bitten but impede an infestation of personal belongings. Only a few test proposals for evaluating the efficacy of repellents against bed bugs have been published so far. In the present study, two test systems were assessed for efficacy testing with five potential bed bug repellents (cinnamon oil, icaridin, N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET), permethrin, and margosa extract). The first test setup was a harborage choice test system that consisted of a crystallizing dish with a treated and an untreated harborage. Sixty minutes and 24 …

Use of a semi-field system to evaluate the efficacy of topical repellents under user conditions provides a disease exposure free technique comparable with field data.

BACKGROUND: Before topical repellents can be employed as interventions against arthropod bites, their efficacy must be established. Currentl … mizing volunteer exposure to disease. Mosquito Repellent Potential of Carpesium abrotanoides Essential Oil and Its Main Components Against a Dengue Vector, Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Disease vectoring mosquitoes are a serious threat to humans. However, till today only few mosquito repellents have been identified. The current study was conducted to evaluate the repellent potential of Carpesium abrotanoides essential oil against Aedes aegypti females by human bait technique. Essential oil was extracted by steam distillation process while the identification of chemical constituents was carried out by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Time span repellent bioassays of C. abrotanoides essential oil in comparison to DEET were performed at three different doses (33 μg/cm2, 165…

A comparison of botanical and synthetic substances commonly used to prevent head lice (Pediculus humanus var. capitis) infestation.

BACKGROUND: Pediculosis, caused by head lice (Pediculidae: Pediculus humanus var. capitis), is experiencing a global resurgence, with the pr … n untested. METHODS: This study tested the preventative efficacy of N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) against several commercially available botanicals to clarify their value as transmission inhibitors, irritants, repellents, and antifeedants. RESULTS: The transfer of head lice to treated hairs was limited by the slippery nature of the oils rather …

Baccharis Species Essential Oils: Repellency and Toxicity against Yellow Fever Mosquitoes and Imported Fire Ants.

Essential oils from five Baccharis species were screened for their toxicity and biting deterrence/repellency against yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.), and imported fire ants, including Solenopsis invicta Buren (RIFA), Solenopsis richteri Forel (BIFA) and their hybrids (HIFA). Baccharis microdonta DC. and B. punctulata DC. at 10 µg/cm2 showed biting deterrence similar to DEET, N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide at 25 nmol/cm2, whereas the repellency of B. pauciflosculosa DC., B. sphenophylla Dusén ex Malme and B. reticularioides Deble & A.S. Insect repellents: An updated review for the clinician.

Malaria, Zika virus, West Nile virus, Dengue fever, and Lyme disease are common causes of morbidity and mortality around the world. While arthropod bites may cause local inflammation and discomfort, a greater concern is the potential to develop deadly systemic infection. The use of insect repellents (IRs) to prevent systemic infections constitutes a fundamental public health effort. Cost effectiveness, availability, and high efficacy against arthropod vectors are key characteristics of an ideal IR. Currently, numerous IRs are available on the market, with N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) b…

Mosquito repellent activity of volatile oils from selected aromatic plants.

Essential oils from fresh leaves of four aromatic plants viz., Ocimum sanctum, Mentha piperita, Eucalyptus globulus and Plectranthus amboinicus were extracted by hydrodistillation. The test solutions were prepared as 20% essential oil in ethanol and positive control as 20% DEET in ethanol. Essential oil blend was prepared as 5% concentration. Nulliparous, 3-5-day-old female adult Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were used for repellency screening as per ICMR protocol. The study showed that the repellency of 20% essential oil of O. sanctum, M. piperita and P. amboinicus were comparable with that of the…

Catnip Oil, Monoterpenes Carvacrol, and Citronellol as an Effective Repellent Against Cimex lectularius (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius L.) is an obligate blood-feeding insect that spreads easily through human activity. Catnip (Nepeta cataria L.) oil has emerged as a promising natural repellent for bed bugs, but previous studies have been limited to laboratory conditions. In this study, we assessed the effectiveness of a catnip-based formulation (20% catnip CCC oil: 10% catnip oil cultivar CR9, 5% carvacrol, 5% citronellol) applied to fabric against bed bugs using simulated field tests, a human finger stimulus test, and field trials. N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) was included as a benchm…

Repellency of cassia bark, eucalyptus, and star anise oils and their major constituents to Leptotrombidium pallidum (Acari: Trombiculidae).

Leptotrombidium pallidum (Nagoya, Miyagawa, Mitamura & Tamiya) is a primary vector of Orientia tsutsugamushi (Hyashi), the causative agent of scrub typhus. An assessment is made of the repellency to L. pallidum larvae (chiggers) of cassia bark, eucalyptus, and star anise oils and major constituents (E)-cinnamaldehyde, 1,8-cineole, and (E)-anethole of the corresponding oils. Results were compared with those of conventional repellents DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), IR3535 [(ethyl 3-[acetyl(butyl)amino]propanoate)], and permethrin. Different tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) prevalences in unfed versus partially engorged ixodid ticks--evidence of virus replication and changes in tick behavior.

Repellency of zerumbone identified in Cyperus rotundus rhizome and other constituents to Blattella germanica.

The ovipositor cue indole inhibits animal host attraction in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes are responsible for disease transmission worldwide. They possess the ability to discriminate between different ecological resources, including nectar sources, animal hosts and oviposition sites, a feature mediated by their olfactory system. Insect repellents, such as N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (also called DEET), have been shown to activate and inhibit mosquito odorant receptors, resulting in behavioral modulation. This and other repellents currently available for personal protection against mosquitoes are topically applied to the skin and operate at a short range. In ou…

A stable nanoliposomal carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel of Pelargonium essential oil: Formulation, characterization, and enhanced repellent activity against Anopheles stephensi.

The development of effective botanical repellents is a key strategy in reducing reliance on synthetic compounds such as N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET).
