Intracellular and subcellular oedema and dehydration.

Changes in intracellular water content appear to be common abnormalities induced by a wide variety of pathogenic mechanisms. Such changes in … lactate production return towards normal, indicating reversibility. Cellular and intramitochondrial dehydration also reduces mitochondrial O2 utilization but metabolic control is lost because lactate production also decreases. Osmotic reconstitution does not reverse the abnormality. Exposure to hypotonic media leads to release of lysosomal enzymes (beta-glucu …

Metformin-SGLT2, Dehydration, and Acidosis Potential.

Clinicians are aware of the risks and benefits of metformin in type 2 diabetes. In geriatric populations lactic acidosis due to diminishing kidney function is an issue. The recent addition of a group of agents to control diabetes through increased glycosuria may increase the risk of dehydration and acidosis. This may happen due to gastrointestinal loss from metformin diarrhea or urine loss from diuretics. A typical example is presented.

[Hypernatremic dehydration associated with breast-feeding].

BACKGROUND: During the last 10 years the number of publications reporting a rise in the incidence of hypernatremia in children who are exclusively breast-fed has increased. OBJECTIVE: To report the results of a series of cases detected in a district hospital in the last 6 years in order to better delineate the clinical characteristics of infant hypernatremia, its optimal treatment and preventive measures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The selection criteria for our study included all neonates aged less than 30 days with serum sodium concentrations equal to or greater than 150 mEq/mL who were exclusi

[Acute gastroenteritis and dehydration in infants].

Gastroenteritis continue to be a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. The main objectives in the approach to a child with acute gastroenteritis are to assess the degree of dehydration and provide fluid and electrolyte replacement. The general agreement among paediatric gastroenterologists is to consider that the optimal management of acute gastroenteritis in mild to moderately dehydrated children in Europe should consist of the following practical guidelines: use of oral fast rehydration solution (ORS) to correct estimated dehydration over 3-4 hours using an hypo-osmolar solution;…

Breastfeeding, dehydration, and shorter maternity stays.

Over a five-month period eight breastfed infants required readmission to Wesley Long Community Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina, within 48 hours of discharge from the newborn nursery. The primary diagnoses upon readmission included hyperbilirubinemia and suspected sepsis. At discharge from the intensive care nursery, mild dehydration secondary to inadequate breastfeeding was deemed a significant factor in precipitating the need for readmission. This increase in readmissions represented a significant change from the past year. An intensive review of each initial hospital stay was conducte…

Hyponatraemia and dehydration in severe malaria.

The prevalence and likely cause of hyponatraemia in severe childhood malaria were investigated. One hundred and thirty two children, 47 of w … n who survived (creatinine 65.7 v 37.9 mumol/l and urea 5.5 v 1.9 mmol/l). The results suggest that dehydration is common in severe childhood malaria, that it may contribute to mild impairment in renal function, and that hyponatraemic children are less water depleted, showing appropriate rather than inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone.

Anesthesia for patients with dehydration/hypovolemia.

Anesthetic drugs normally depress cardiovascular function and in a patient that is already dehydrated and hypovolemic can cause severe hypotension. Reestablishing intravascular volume with a balanced salt solution can return cardiovascular function to normal, and anesthesia must not be induced until the animal has been stabilized.

[Hyperglycemia in hypertonic dehydration (author's transl)].

Fourteen patients who developed hyperglycemia with hypertonic dehydration are reviewed, and compared to a control group of twenty-four dehydrated infants without hyperglycemia. The threshold of hyperglycemia was considered at 125 mg. %. The relationship between hyperglycemia and degree of formula concentration, incidence of shock and water and solute metabolism chemistry are analysed. The different theories about hyperglycemia in the course of hypertonic dehydration are discussed. Because of the negativity of other factors, authors suggest that the most important factor in hyperglycemia may be…

Heat tolerance following diuretic induced dehydration.

In an effort to assess the effects of acute fluid loss on body temperature regulation during exercise, seven subjects (one female and six ma … t dissipation appeared limited mainly by a reduction in peripheral blood flow. The diuretic induced dehydration was found to increase the sensitivity of some subjects to the exercise-heat stress, producing symptoms of heat exhaustion.
