The Intraoral Ultrasonography in Dentistry.

Ultrasonography (USG) is a diagnostic method that the ultrasonic image is created by ultrahigh-frequency sound waves, which have an acoustic frequency above the threshold of human hearing. Compared to other medical imaging methods, USG has several advantages of being real time, portable, inexpensive, radiation free, and noninvasive. In the medicine, most of the USG applications are transcutaneous. However, intraoral USG has been a relatively rare application, it has recently been drawing more interest. Intraoral USG is also used in dentistry for examining the salivary glands and ducts, as well…

Conscious Sedation in Dentistry.

Sedation in dentistry has been a controversial topic due to questions being raised over its safety, especially in dental chair. Dental fear and anxiety are not only common in children but also significantly prevalent among adults due to high intensity of pain. Sharing of airway between the anesthesiologist and the dentist remains the greatest challenge. The purpose of this review is to study the recent trends in conscious sedation in the field of dentistry from an anesthesiologist's perspective. It will provide a practical outline of the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and routes of admini…

[Myasthenia gravis in dentistry].

In a patient with myasthenia gravis, a life-threatening myasthenic crisis can occur, a complication of myasthenia gravis. The crisis can be triggered by, among other things, emotional stress, pain, infections and a reaction to medication. The policy for invasive dental treatment in a patient with myasthenia gravis must be aimed at preventing a crisis. Prior to the intervention, consultation with the neurologist in charge is necessary because sometimes optimisation of the medication or preventive measures are required. Treatment of a myasthenia gravis patient with amide local analgesic is possi

[Preventive vaccinations in dentistry].

The purpose of this current paper is to give a simple update and overview about vaccinations for dental health care workers considering the new guidelines published in February 2014 by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health. It is recommended to have at least a valid protection against hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, influenza, varicella, diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis and pertussis. Dental health care workers are highly exposed and high risk carriers for inoculable diseases, therefore regular refreshment of vaccinations is necessary for public health and their own health.

[Pain management in dentistry].

The aim of the study was to determine the most effective dose of Ibuprofen - one of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs frequently used in dental practice for pain management. According to our observations, Ibuprofen markedly softens and quickly reduces procedural pain in 55 (91.67%) patients and post-procedural pain in 44 (73.33%) patients, reduces the post-procedural need for or the amount of the drug, removes the fear of anesthesia and endodontic treatment; with irreversible pulpits significantly increases the efficiency of the inferior alveolar nerve block by local anesthetics. Methamphetamine abuse and dentistry.

Methamphetamine is a highly addictive powerful stimulant that increases wakefulness and physical activity and produces other effects including cardiac dysrhythmias, hypertension, hallucinations, and violent behavior. The prevalence of methamphetamine use is estimated at 35 million people worldwide and 10.4 million people in the United States. In the United States, the prevalence of methamphetamine use is beginning to decline but methamphetamine trafficking and use are still significant problems. Dental patients who abuse methamphetamine can present with poor oral hygiene, xerostomia, rampant c

Photodynamic therapy in dentistry.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), also known as photoradiation therapy, phototherapy, or photochemotherapy, involves the use of a photoactive dye (photosensitizer) that is activated by exposure to light of a specific wavelength in the presence of oxygen. The transfer of energy from the activated photosensitizer to available oxygen results in the formation of toxic oxygen species, such as singlet oxygen and free radicals. These very reactive chemical species can damage proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and other cellular components. Applications of PDT in dentistry are growing rapidly: the treatment o…

[The secondary headache in dentistry].

This report summarizes the secondary headache attributed to dental disease. Among a lot of dental diseases, the temporomandibular disorder(TMD) is the most important for understanding the mechanism of this type of headache. Our recent study showed that TMD patients had the following symptoms: dysdiadochokinesia, abnormal induced-rigidity in forearms, abnormal circadian rhythm, tension-type headache and mental torment. All these abnormal symptoms were relieved by the improvement of the patient's sleep-quality. The brain monoaminergic systems are known to be related to muscle tonus, sleep proble

Dentistry and medicine, then and now.

Two factors have, at times, pushed dentistry and medicine together and pulled them apart. The factor acting to create a symbiosis is the common biomedical or scientific foundation for these fields. The factor causing independence deals with socio-cultural matters impacting on the professions and the public. These two factors will be examined at three points in time when the relationship between the two professions was significantly important for the welfare of the public: the 1920s and '30s, the 1960s and '70s, and our own time. Contemporary major discussion about the alignment of dental educa…
