Biologic testing of leachable aromatic compounds from denture base materials.

The aromatic compounds phenyl benzoate (PB), phenyl salicylate (PS), and biphenyl (BP), which have previously been found to leach from poly(methyl methacrylate) denture base materials, were tested for cytotoxicity and biologic effects by L929 cells in culture. The octanol-water partition coefficient (log P(ow), a descriptor for the lipophilicity, was determined for the compounds. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by total cell growth and the plating efficiency test, and biologic effects by the total fatty acid composition of L929 cells. The commonly used tests, total cell growth and plating efficienc

Antimicrobial efficacy of a novel antimicrobial 3D-printed denture base resin.

Colonizing microbes on denture resins can result in oral inflammation and infections associated with morbidity and mortality. The antibacterial activity of a denture base resin impregnated with silver sodium hydrogen zirconium phosphate and formulated for 3-dimensional (3D) printing was compared with that of a commonly used 3D-printed resin (negative control). A total of 336 disc-shaped specimens were 3D printed from the antimicrobial and control denture base resins (n = 168 per group). The ASTM E2180-07 standard test method was used to determine the short-term and long-term in vitro antimicro

Biofilm Formation on Denture Base Material Reinforced With a Novel Organic Material.

BACKGROUND: Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a novel organic material developed by one of the authors in this study. When MCC was incorporated with conventionally available denture base resin, it demonstrated increased flexural strength and flexural modulus. However, it was speculated that because the material is organic, it can promote the growth of Candida. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the Candida albicans biofilm formation on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture base resin incorporated with MCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MCC is an organic material extracted from the oil palm

In Vitro Comparison of Polymerization Techniques on the Strength and Hardness of Denture Base Resins.

PURPOSE: Acrylic dentures fabricated using polymethyl methacrylate are subjected to either intraoral fatigue stress or extraoral impact stress, eventually forming microcracks and fractures. This limitation should be overcome by either modification in the acrylic resin material or in polymerization techniques. This study compares the impact strength and flexural strength of high-impact resin to conventional resin in short- and long-heat polymerization settings. METHODOLOGY: The in vitro study design adopted a comparison of two groups of acrylic resin specimens, conventional and high-impact res

Evaluation of the bond strength, surface roughness and wettability between 3D-printed denture base resin to denture lining material to different surface treatments.

BACKGROUND: The low bond strength between 3D-printed denture base resin and denture lining material is due to the difference in chemical structure, which justifies the use of methods to increase such bond. This study aims to examine the influence of different surface treatments on the bond strength, surface roughness, and wettability between 3D-printed denture resin and denture lining material. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Bar-shaped (75×10×10 mm) and square-shaped (10×10×3 mm) specimens were manufactured using heat-polymerized (HT) (VIPICRIL Plus) and 3D-printed (3D) (Prizma 3D Bio Denture) denture

Fatal copper deficiency from excessive use of zinc-based denture adhesive.

INTRODUCTION: Human stores of zinc and copper exist in dynamic equilibrium; an increase in one causes a fall in the other, and clinical consequences of toxicity or deficiency of one or the other may result. Some of the most widely used denture adhesives are zinc based, creating a potential for zinc toxicity and corresponding copper deficiency. A case of denture adhesive-based zinc toxicity with corresponding copper deficiency leading to fatal ascending sensorimotor polyneuropathy was identified. The objectives of this study were to illustrate the evolution, and disparate response to treatment,

In vitro antiseptic properties of an ammonium compound combined with denture base acrylic resin.

BACKGROUND: Denture base acrylic resin is easily colonised by oral endogenous bacteria and Candida spp., and eventually by extra-oral species such as Staphylococcus spp., Pseudomonadaceae or members of Enterobacteriaceae. This microbial reservoir can be responsive for denture related stomatitis and aspiration pneumonia, a life-threatening infection especially in geriatric patients. However, the oral and denture hygiene of dependent elderly individuals is extremely poor. OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study aimed to determine the per cent of a quaternary ammonium compound heat-polymerised in acrylic
