OBJECTIVES: To compare the performance of 18F-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) and computed tomography (CT) in the follow-up of nonseminomatous germ cell tumours (NSGCT) in the retroperitoneum.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: FDG-PET was used 25 times in 15 patients diagnosed with NSGCT. At the time of diagnosis five patients each were in stage I, II and III. Five patients had pure embryonal carcinoma, two had yolk sac tumours, one choriocarcinoma and seven had mixed tumours.

Anti-cancer strategies that target the glycolytic metabolism of tumors have been proposed. The glucose analog 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) is imported into cells and, after phosphorylation, becomes 2DG-6-phosphate, a toxic by-product that inhibits glycolysis. F-18 fluoro-deoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in the thyroid and thymus is well reported in patients with Graves' disease. Incidental skeletal muscle uptake has also been reported in other non-musculoskeletal (benign and malignant) pathologies. We report a patient of Graves' disease showing symmetrical skeletal muscle uptake but no thyroidal or thymus uptake of FDG.

Distant sites of metastatic fallopian tube carcinoma, including humerus, umbilicus, and groin, were clearly imaged with FDG-PET; the surgical-pathologic correlations are presented. In disorders such as ovarian or fallopian tube cancer, where a reliable means of diagnosing persistent or recurrent disease remains elusive, PET scanning offers another approach to this problem. Based on the increased rate of glucose metabolism in tumors, this modality focuses on the biochemical differences between malignant tissues and their normal counterparts in order to demonstrate positive findings on imaging.

The effect of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP/amylin) on 2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) uptake was studied in isolated mouse pancreatic acini in the absence or presence of insulin. Synthetic rat IAPP-NH2 caused a dose-dependent stimulation of 2-DG uptake by mouse acini with a half-maximal concentration at 70 nM.
