BACKGROUND: Congenital myasthenic syndromes (CMS) are inherited disorders of neuromuscular transmission with few effective treatments. Salbutamol, a β2-adrenergic agonist, has shown anecdotal benefit, yet no comprehensive assessment of its clinical effectiveness across genetic subtypes exists. This systematic review aimed to evaluate outcomes associated with Salbutamol therapy in genetically confirmed CMS. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and Scopus through May 19, 2025, identifying studies involving Salbutamol treatment in patients with genetically confirmed con

BACKGROUND: Injecting drug use contributes significantly to morbidity, mortality and broader social harms globally. Supervised Injecting Facilities (SIFs) are harm reduction interventions that reduce overdose risk and facilitate access to health services for marginalised individuals. While international evidence supports the effectiveness of SIFs, Australian population-level surveillance data quantifying their impact on emergency medical service utilisation remain limited.
METHODS: Using data from the National Ambulance Surveillance System, we conducted a retrospective, interrupted time serie

A captive male Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus) presented with medial shoulder luxation. The animal had previously undergone left hindlimb amputation following a traffic accident and exhibited severe dysfunction of the right hindlimb due to chronic medial patellar luxation (MPL), resulting in forelimb-dependent ambulation. Closed reduction was unsuccessful, so external skeletal fixation was applied to achieve stabilization through periarticular fibrosis. The animal resumed weight-bearing shortly after surgery, and the fixator was safely removed under light sedation si…

BACKGROUND: Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is a common surgical complication of major joint arthroplasty and is associated with increased lengths of stay and urinary tract infections. Studies have found that certain anticholinergic medications and reduced mobility are associated with POUR. This study assessed the effect of anticholinergic burden and later postoperative ambulation on POUR.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we included subjects who had undergone elective primary or revision hip or knee arthroplasty (total hip arthroplasty [THA] or total knee arthroplasty [TKA

Incidental durotomy (ID) can occur in up to 14% of all lumbar spine surgeries. The risk of this complication is markedly higher among elderly patients with advanced spinal pathology. In addition, revision cases and other more invasive procedures increase the risk of ID. When unrepaired, IDs can increase the risk of developing meningitis and can lead to the formation of cerebrospinal fluid fistulas and pseudomeningoceles. Intraoperative recognition and repair are essential to ID management, although repair techniques vary considerably. Although primary suture repair is considered the "benchmark

Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) is a rare hereditary neuromuscular disease, caused by a genetic defect in the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) gene. We studied the natural history of respiratory function and its affecting factors in 23 adult BMD patients. These important data are needed for (future) clinical trials in BMD but are largely lacking. Patients had a median age of 51 years (28-78y) and median follow-up duration of 14 years (2-25y). We analysed 190 pulmonary function measurements with a median interval of one year (1-17y) and measured a 1.00% decline of Forced Vital Capacity percent

The aim of this prospective longitudinal multi centric study was to evaluate the correlation between the Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale and the 20 item version of the Motor Function Measure in non ambulant SMA children and adults at baseline and over a 12 month period. Seventy-four non-ambulant patients performed both measures at baseline and 49 also had an assessment 12 month later. At baseline the scores ranged between 0 and 40 on the Hammersmith Motor function Scale and between 3 and 45 on the Motor Function Measure 20. The correlation between the two scales was 0.733. A reduction in perioperative mortality can be observed when the operative treatment of intertrochanteric femur fractures in the elderly is performed within a 6-h time limit, or after stabilisation of the patient within a 24-h frame. To insure optimal progress, a stable open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with a DHS or other implant, or a prosthetic replacement is needed to achieve early ambulation. The ability to walk and early ambulation are essential for a quick hospital discharge and reintegration into social life. The quality of life decreases due to the injury [Mayo Hip Score (2 M

Unlike adults, small children and infants do not require stretchers or ambulances for transport from a prehospital scene to the emergency department (ED). This study was designed to determine the importance of this difference in patient transport needs. A Macintosh Classic computer was programmed to compare the time to intubation (TTI) of a child with impending respiratory arrest treated in a standard paramedic/ambulance transport system versus that of a child treated in a system in which a patrolling police car transports the child directly to an ED. The dependent variable TTI was determined,

AIM: To determine the predictive value of the early motor repertoire for the level of self-mobility in children with cerebral palsy (CP) at school age.
METHOD: Video recordings were made at 11 to 17 weeks post-term of 37 preterm infants (20 males, 17 females) who later developed CP. The early motor repertoire was assessed by obtaining a motor optimality score. At 6 to 12 years, children were classified according to the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS).
RESULTS: Of 37 children (mean gestational age 29.1wks, SD 1.9; mean birthweight 1273g, SD 324), nine had unilateral and 28

Equinovarus of the foot is the most common lower extremity deformity following traumatic brain injury. We evaluated outcomes of the split anterior tibialis tendon transfer (SPLATT) for correction of equinovarus in 47 patients with hemiplegic traumatic brain injury and specifically studied differences in outcomes with two tendon fixation techniques. Seventeen patients constituting Group I underwent fixation with one technique and 30 constituting Group II had another technique. Patients in both groups had appropriate procedures based on dynamic electromyography and gait analyses. Both groups wer

Stroke is a leading cause of disability, significantly impacting mobility. Effective rehabilitation depends on accurate predictors of recovery. Recent studies suggest that both cognitive function and certain initial laboratory biomarkers, such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), could be crucial for predicting recovery outcomes. This study investigates how cognitive function and ALT levels can predict functional ambulation in survivors of middle cerebral artery stroke. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 87 patients who began rehabilitation within 30 days of their first middle cerebral ar

Pulmonary embolus (PE) after cardiac bypass surgery is an uncommon complication but carries with it high morbidity and mortality. The incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and PE after cardiac bypass varies depending on postoperative thromboprophylaxis, the presence of indwelling central venous catheters in the lower extremities, and early ambulation. The clinical diagnosis of DVT remains difficult and challenging. Pulmonary embolus is often the first occurring clinical event. The safety and effectiveness of preventative pharmacologic agents, such as subcutaneous unfractionated or fractionat

INTRODUCTION: Minor amputation was performed as a salvage procedure because most of the patients were not able to ambulate and become dependent following major amputation. Minor amputation is defined as amputation at the level of ankle joint and below while major amputation is defines by amputation above the ankle joint. The aim of this study was to compare the quality of life among diabetes patients following major and minor amputations.
METHODS: A total of 94 diabetes patients were reviewed six months following amputation. Their walking ability, dependency status and quality of life were ev
