Atopic Dermatitis and Sleep Disorders.

PURPOSE: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin disease affecting 129 million people worldwide and is characterized by recurrent eczema, severe pruritus, and skin barrier damage. Previous studies on AD-sleep disorder associations were limited by small sample sizes or single-center designs, lacking large-scale epidemiological evidence. This study aimed to investigate the association between AD and sleep disorders using the UK Biobank prospective cohort and to explore effects of sex, race, and obesity on this relationship. METHODS: A prospective cohort design was employed, includi

Atopic Dermatitis and Academic Performance.

IMPORTANCE: Atopic dermatitis (AD) may impair school performance through sleep disturbance, comorbidities, or psychosocial effects; however, population-based longitudinal evidence is limited. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of AD with academic performance and whether this association is modified or confounded by disease phenotype and socioeconomic background. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Parallel, population-based cohort studies in Denmark and England, including children with or without AD. In Denmark, children born between 1986 and 2000 from nationwide linked registries were

Management of Atopic Hand Dermatitis.

Atopic hand dermatitis (AHD), a manifestation of atopic dermatitis, can have a profound negative effect on a patient's disease-related quality of life due to its visibility, chronic nature, and overall discomfort that it causes. AHD differs from other forms of chronic hand eczema due to its likely distinct, complex pathogenesis, which is a combination of environmental triggers, genetic predisposition, and immune dysfunction. A proper diagnosis of AHD is made through clinical evaluation and the ability to establish subtle clinical differences between AHD and other conditions. Diagnosis is the f

Atopic Dermatitis: Managing the Itch.

Atopic dermatitis has a substantial impact on sleep, appearance, psychological well-being, and other qualities of life. The visual appearance of lichenification, cheilitis, hyperpigmentation, ichthyosis, and erythema can be socially stigmatizing, and treatment of these symptoms is challenging. In managing pruritus in patients, practitioners should assess and document pruritus through questionnaires at each routine visit. Initially, practitioners should advise patients to employ nonpharmaceutical treatments such as emollients with wet wraps, elimination of triggers, changing scratching habits,

Scabies mimicking relapsing atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease clinically characterized by eczematous skin manifestations. Sometimes, it can manifest with non-specific clinical features, which are common with other skin conditions, such as infectious and neoplastic diseases. We would like to underline the importance of accurate dermatologic examination and rigorous anamnesis in patients affected by AD to avoid misdiagnosis and delayed treatments.

Eczema herpeticum in atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of the most common chronic inflammatory skin diseases leading to pruritic skin lesions. A subset of AD patients exhibits a disseminated severe HSV infection called eczema herpeticum (EH) that can cause life-threatening complications. This review gives an overview of the clinical picture, and characteristics of the patients as well as the diagnosis and therapy of EH. A special focus lies on the pathophysiological hallmarks identified so far that predispose for EH. This aspect covers genetic aberrations, immunological changes, and environmental influences displaying

Atopic dermatitis and psychosocial comorbidities.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory disease that may be associated with a number of comorbidities including psychosocial disorders, which are the primary focus of this article. The data presented is based on a literature search in PubMed and subsequent screening of relevant review articles and guidelines. There is a greater prevalence of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and suicidal ideation among individuals with AD. The disease negatively impacts patients' quality of life. Children with AD have been shown to more commonly exhibit signs of attention-deficit/hyperactivity diso

Ophthalmic manifestations of atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic condition of complex etiology, whose clinical course involves remission and recurrence. It is not an isolated disease entity affecting only the skin, but one that co-occurs with disorders of other organs. Numerous literature reports have long confirmed the relationship between the disorder and a growing number of ophthalmic manifestations such as keratoconus and retinal detachment. Further studies are required to establish the cause of correlations and to allow for implementation of appropriate prophylaxis and treatment. The aim of the present paper is to review

[New treatments for atopic dermatitis].

New treatments for atopic dermatitis Atopic dermatitis is one of the most common skin disorders in Sweden. The pathogenesis is a complex counterplay between a defect skin barrier and an abnormal immune response that can be caused by genetic and/or environmental factors. Atopic dermatitis has a huge negative impact on quality of life. New and more specific treatments are under way and hopefully we will, in the near future, better treat even the more severe cases of atopic dermatitis.

Infectious Complications in Atopic Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis is characterized by the interplay of skin barrier defects with the immune system and skin microbiome that causes patients to be at risk for infectious complications. This article reviews the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis and the mechanisms through which patients are at risk for infection from bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogens. Although these complications may be managed acutely, prevention of secondary infections depends on a multipronged approach in the maintenance of skin integrity, control of flares, and microbial pathogens.

Atopic dermatitis and dental manifestations.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin disease associated with epidermal dysfunction commonly seen in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible correlation between atopic dermatitis and dental diseases in paediatric patients. METHODS: An observational study was conducted by the Department of Paediatric Dentistry of the Policlinico Tor Vergata among a group of 300 children, between 2 and 17 years of age and of both genders, for a period of 6 months from January 2013 to June 2013. Socio-demographic data including race, gender, and age were collected. Clinical and der

Atopic dermatitis in Tunisian schoolchildren.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) is low in North Africa. We describe the epidemiology of this atopic condition among school children in Tunisia. METHODS: We conducted a Cross-sectional survey study of 5 to 6-year-old schoolchildren from 21 primary schools of Sfax. The diagnosis of AD was based on the U.K. Working Party diagnostic criteria. A questionnaire including these criteria and some risk factors of AD was issued to the children. All children were examined by one dermatologist. RESULTS: Among the 1617 examined children, ten had AD giving a one-year prevalence of 0.

Patch testing in atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Because atopic dermatitis (AD) patients differ from non-AD patients in immunologic responses (they lack β-defensins, are more likely to react to protein allergens, and are harder to experimentally sensitize to the nonprotein allergens), patch-test responses to commercially available patch test series may differ in AD patients. OBJECTIVE: To compare responses to conventional patch tests in AD and non-AD patients and to assess the importance of specific allergens in AD. METHODS: AD patients were strictly defined by history of childhood flexural dermatitis. Patients with active dise

Canine atopic dermatitis: what's new?

Much progress has been made in understanding canine atopic dermatitis (AD), its triggering factors, and the best approach to its diagnosis and management. This article discussess the clinical features of AD, the pitfalls of allergy testing, and how recent research developments can influence the clinical management of this condition. Of particular interest is the accumulating evidence of skin barrier dysfunction, which should prompt clinicians to consider a shift from "reactive" management, classically focused on controlling and suppressing the inflammation, to a more "proactive" management of

[Uncommon manifestations of atopic dermatitis].

Atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory process characterized by a series of cutaneous alterations of typical morphology and distribution, with intense pruritus of nocturnal predominance, of chronic evolution, stational appearance, and with personal and family history of atopy. On genetically predisposed skin, dry and hypersensitive, the immune factors and other types are implicated in determining the abnormal reactions to multiple endogenous and environmental factors. The diagnosis is clinical, generally obtained by a group of signs and symptoms known as the Hanifin and Rajka criteria. The patie

[Atopic dermatitis and psychological factors].

The role of stress on the triggering-off of flares of atopic dermatitis (AD) is the subject of a consensus. It is understandable because biochemical mediators are known to affect the cells implied in AD. The role of more complex psychological factors (depression, anxiety, and familial interaction) is highly probable but difficult to demonstrate. The psychological impact of AD is obviously severe. Psychotherapy provides beneficial effects on the impact but also on pruritus and scratching. Its effect on the AD lesions has rarely been studied but has been observed in many cases. Psychotropics can

[Atopic dermatitis and psychological stress].

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disease. Its main features are eczematous skin lesions with a typical distribution and severe pruritus. Allergens, skin irritants, systemic or local infections, environmental pollutants and hormonal changes have a role in the pathophysiology of AD. A further important trigger factor for both intrinsic and extrinsic AD is emotional stress. Recently published observations point to direct psychoneuroimmunological and -endocrinological mechanisms: Psychological stress causes a transient increase of peripheral blood eosinophil count an

Atopic dermatitis and food allergy.

In order to determine the importance of food sensitization in the etiopathogenesis of atopic dermatitis, we performed a study on 74 patients who fulfilled a previously suggested diagnosis criteria. Of these patients, 17.5% presented allergic rhinitis and 62.2% had associated bronchial asthma. We found that in 64.9% of the patients there was a food sensitization, with milk (36.5%), egg (35.1%) and fish (21.6%) being the most frequently involved. We also observed that 34% of the patients were sensitized to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and 24.3% to pollen. These sensitizations were confirmed by

[Eye complications in atopic dermatitis].

Eye complications were studied in 240 cases of atopic dermatitis (age distribution 9 months to 40 years) hospitalized in the dermatology ward of our hospital. One hundred and thirty-four patients (55.8%) had at least one eye complication. Allergic conjunctivitis, cataracts, vernal conjunctivitis, retinal detachment, keratoconus, and retinal tears were detected in 28.3%, 17.9%, 2.1%, 1.3%, 1.3%, and 0.8%, respectively. Serum IgE levels and eye complications did not correlate. Routine ophthalmological examinations are recommended for patients with atopic dermatitis.
