Actinic reticuloid via persistent light reaction from photoallergic contact dermatitis.

Photoallergic contact dermatitis developed in a patient who had used deodorant soaps containing tribromsalan. He persistently reacted to light, since the dermatitis persisted long after cessation of contact with the causative chemical. During this period, he experienced generalized, eczematous dermatitis on several occasions. On testing, the patient showed extremely severe photosensitivity extending through the ultraviolet to the visible spectrum. At that time, a skin biopsy specimen showed the microscopic findings of eczematous dermatitis. A diagnosis of actinic reticuloid was first made hist

Photoallergic contact dermatitis caused by ultraviolet filters in different sunscreens.

Over the last decade, a change in the public awareness regarding the possible danger of excessive sunlight exposure has resulted in an increased consumption of sunscreens. These products contain a broad spectrum of putative sensitizers that can cause contact dermatitis and, upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, photocontact dermatitis. Among these sensitizing compounds, UV filters are the most frequent cause of photoallergic reactions. Although rarely observed, we here describe the occurrence of a photoallergic contact dermatitis in a 55-year-old man after the use of two different sun

Dioxopromethazine-induced photoallergic contact dermatitis followed by persistent light reaction.

BACKGROUND: Although photosensitivity after photoallergy to topical phenothiazine antihistamines is well known, there have been no previous reports of dioxopromethazine inducing this phenomenon. OBJECTIVE: A housewife used 0.5% dioxopromethazine in Prothanon gel for palpebral pruritus and developed severe dermatitis of the lower eyelids with spread to the sun-exposed areas. METHODS: The minimal erythema doses and the minimal infiltrate doses for ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) were established before photopatch testing and at intervals up to 497 days thereafter. Test sites were r

Allergic contact and photoallergic contact dermatitis to plant and pesticide allergens.

BACKGROUND: The panel of patch test allergens used for the evaluation of patients with suspected photoallergy typically does not include plant and pesticide allergens. The prevalence of allergic contact dermatitis and photoallergic contact dermatitis to plant and pesticide allergens was determined for this subgroup of patients. OBSERVATION: Positive reactions were detected in 12 of 26 patients who were tested with our photoallergen series: 5 with allergic contact dermatitis, 5 with photoallergic contact dermatitis, and 2 with both. Four of the 12 patients had positive patch and photo-patch te

The frequency and causes of photoallergic contact dermatitis among dermatology outpatients.

Too many patients with photoallergy remain undiagnosed due to unsatisfactory knowledge among doctors and limited access to photopatch testing. The objectives of this study were to analyze the frequency of patients requiring diagnostic work-up for photoallergic contact dermatitis among dermatology patients, and to identify the causative photosensitizers. This prospective study involved 1000 consecutive, first-referred dermatology outpatients. All patients with a history of dermatitis induced or aggravated by exposure to light were qualified for photopatch testing. In the study group, 36 (3.6%;

Immunofluorescence findings in a reactivating lichenoid photoallergic chronic dermatitis (actinic reticuloid).

BACKGROUND: Chronic photosensitivity dermatitis (CPD) (also named actinic reticuloid) is an unusual disease classically referred often in elderly men. Affected patients have severely itchy, thickened dry skin in areas exposed to the sun throughout the years. METHOD: A Caucasian female patient who worked most of her life outside who had "chronic dermatitis" in her neck started planting chrysanthemum in her garden on a sunny day. Later, she presented edema, erythema, papules, and a few vesicles in her neck with severe pruritus. STUDIES: A skin biopsy revealed the diagnosis of CPD, along with p

Photoallergic Contact Dermatitis due to Ketoprofen and Hydrogenated Rosin Glycerol Ester.

A topical application of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) may induct an adverse reaction of photoallergic contact dermatitis. The occlusive usage may provoke concomitant photoallergic sensitizations to an NSAID and other ingredients. We describe a 58-year-old woman with photoallergic contact dermatitis from ketoprofen and hydrogenated rosin glycerol ester in the applied compress. Our case indicates that photopatch testing with all ingredients is required to verify the actual photoallergen(s).

Photoallergic Contact Dermatitis to Sunscreens Containing Oxybenzone in La Plata, Argentina.

BACKGROUND: Photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD) to oxybenzone was reported for the first time in 1980. Oxybenzone is the most common photoallergen in the United States and Canada and the fourth most common .in Europe. There are no studies or data on the prevalence of oxybenzone PACD in Argentina. OBJECTIVE: To determine the proportion of photosensitive patients with PACD to oxybenzone. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study of 35 patients with photosensitivity reactions confirmed by photopatch testing at the Research Center of Hospital Público San Martín in La Plata, A

Photoallergic contact dermatitis from ketoprofen induced by drug-contaminated personal objects.

BACKGROUND: Photoallergic contact dermatitis from ketoprofen has been recognized since the mid-1980s. Skin reactions have been reported to continue weeks after discontinuation of ketoprofen. One reason for this could be residual ketoprofen in the skin, which has been shown in a skin biopsy specimen. OBJECTIVE: We sought to report on 3 cases of photoallergic contact dermatitis from ketoprofen in topical anti-inflammatory gels and on relapses of dermatitis appearing after use of ketoprofen-contaminated objects. METHODS: We patch and photopatch tested, with standard series, the anti-inflammator
