The photosensitivity dermatitis and actinic reticuloid syndrome (chronic actinic dermatitis) occurring in seven young atopic dermatitis patients.

Seven young patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) who presented with a marked photoexposed site dermatitis have been investigated in detail. The results of phototesting, patch testing and other investigations were compatible with the diagnosis of photosensitivity dermatitis/actinic reticuloid syndrome (PD/AR) (chronic actinic dermatitis). It is known that AD patients may have photoaggravation of their dermatitis or exacerbation secondary to a photodermatosis, such as polymorphic light eruption, actinic prurigo or drug-induced phototoxicity. The patients we describe, however, appear to be an unc

Phytodermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Most dermatologists can recognize the classic patterns of presentation of plant contact dermatitis; however, few can recognize the offending plants or know the name and chemical structure of the allergens or irritants that they contain. OBJECTIVE: Five basic clinical patterns of phytodermatitis are reviewed: 1) allergic phytodermatitis, 2) photophytodermatitis, 3) irritant contact dermatitis, 4) pharmacologic injury, and 5) mechanical injury. The plants responsible for each pattern are presented by families, according to current scientific taxonomy. The chemical structure of the o

Shades of phototoxicity in fluorescent imaging agents (that are not supposed to be phototoxic).

This article is a highlight of the paper by Huang et al. in this issue of Photochemistry and Photobiology. It describes shades of phototoxicity in fluorescent imaging agents that are not intended to be phototoxic. Phototoxicity was assessed using a modified neutral red uptake (NRU) in vitro assay with mean photo-effects (MPE) for the fluorescent agents IRdye800, indocyanine green (ICG), proflavine, and methylene blue (MB), with comparisons to known phototoxic agents benzoporphyrin derivative (BPD) and rose bengal (RB). The experimental conditions were aimed to mimic clinical settings, using no

Cutaneous adverse reactions of amiodarone.

Dermatological complications of amiodarone are commonly encountered problems in therapy. The incidence in the population of patients with prolonged use of amiodarone reaches nearly 75% according to various sources. Nevertheless, they are often misdiagnosed or overlooked. The aim of this review is to present the current state of knowledge about skin changes induced by amiodarone, including phototoxic and photoallergic reactions, as well as hyperpigmentation. In most cases, the adverse effects are reversible and disappear after discontinuation of the drug. Although the dermatological complicatio

Lime-induced phytophotodermatitis.

Phytophotodermatitis, also commonly known as phototoxic dermatitis, is a common skin condition that occurs after contact with certain plants and subsequent exposure to sunlight. It is often confused with skin burns due to the blistering nature of its lesions. We herein report a case of phytophotodermatitis that developed in a 26-year-old male following contact with lime and subsequent exposure to sunlight.

Phototoxicity study of a ketoprofen poultice in guinea pigs.

Ketoprofen has been reported to have such side effects as photosensitive dermatitis in humans (The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, 2001). In the present study, as part of a safety evaluation of Miltax, an application drug containing ketoprofen, phototoxicity of Miltax was examined in guinea pigs. In the present skin phototoxicity study, Miltax was applied for 12 hr. Ultraviolet (UV) rays were irradiated to examine whether or not Miltax elicited skin reaction. Two kinds of UV-A plus UV-B dual irradiation and UV-A single irradiation were used for the elicitation. With UV-A plus UV-B dual
