Streptococcus pyogenes or Group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections are the leading cause of bacterial tonsillopharyngitis. The bacterium can survive and persist within the human host for a long time as it is observed in up to 40% of the population who are considered as carriers. Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis is a highly contagious disease whose transmission has been linked to the ophthalmologist's office. The authors studied the ability of adenovirus 19 (ADV 19) to survive on surfaces commonly found in the office setting. Corynebacterium diphtheriae was isolated from pyoderma and ulcerative skin lesions with a modified delayed culture procedure as late as 9 weeks after field collection of silica gel-desiccated swabs. 1200 adult Biomphalaria glabrata were submitted during 6 weeks to anhydrobiosis condition. In this study, we investigated the ability of several (hyper-) thermophilic Archaea and phylogenetically deep-branching thermophilic Bacteria to survive high fluences of monochromatic UV-C (254 nm) and high doses of ionizing radiation, respectively. The RAD7 radon/thoron monitor is highly sensitive to humidity, causing traditional indicating desiccants to rapidly saturate and irreversibly degrade in field conditions. To address this bottleneck, this study innovatively introduces Nafion tubes as a passive pre-dehumidification unit within a closed-loop measurement system.
