Acute vertigo or dizziness is a frequent presentation to the emergency department (ED), making up between 2.1% and 4.4% of all consultations. Given the nature of the ED where the priority is triage, diagnostic delays and misdiagnoses are common, with as many as a third of vertebrobasilar strokes presenting with acute vertigo or dizziness being missed. Thoracic and abdominal trauma are leading causes of mortality in pediatric patients making their diagnosis and management of utmost importance in children who present to the emergency department for traumatic injuries. Diagnostic errors can lead to increased morbidity and mortality in this already at-risk population. This article aims to identify these diagnostic errors and address ways to improve outcomes in pediatric patients presenting with thoracic and abdominal trauma.

A clinicoanatomical study was conducted in 218 cases of atherosclerotic dementia. 12 cases (5,5% of the total amount) showed diagnostic errors. Atherosclerotic dementia with Alzhemier-like symptomatology during life was considered to be Alzheimers disease, while Alzheimers disease, complicated by cerebral atherosclerosis as atherosclerotic dementia. Some objective and subjective factors of diagnostic errors were established. Late detection of such patients is considered as one of the risk factors of diagnostic errors during life.

34 children with congenital hydronephrosis, operated upon for erroneosly diagnosed acute appendicitis (17), malignant tumor (11), and ileus (8), were under observation. To prevent from unwarranted surgical interventions in dubious cases excretory urography and other x-ray and instrumental methods of examination must be used widely. After the removal of an unchanged vermiform process in children, suffering from abdominal pain, the examination of the urinary tract is indicated. Such patients should be under dispensary observation of a children's surgeon.
