Diaphyseal fractures of the humerus. Treatment with prefabricated braces.

Using a prefabricated brace, we treated 233 patients who had a fracture of the humeral shaft. One hundred and seventy patients were available for follow-up, which ranged from five weeks to forty-eight months. In these patients (forty-three open and 127 closed fractures), the average time to union was 10.6 weeks; the average varus-valgus angulation, 5 degrees; the average anterior-posterior angulation, 3 degrees; and the average shortening, as measured radiographically, four millimeters. All but three of the patients had an excellent or a good functional result with a nearly full range of motio

Multiplane correctional osteotomy of the tibia for diaphyseal malunion.

Multiplane correctional osteotomy of the tibia was performed on seven patients with diaphyseal malunion involving deformity in more than one plane. All patients had preoperative complaints related to either disturbances of gait, associated joint or back pain, or a cosmetically unacceptable extremity. Correction of length, varus/valgus, anterior/posterior bowing, and internal/external torsion were possible. Stabilization by standard AO principles of lag screw compression and neutralization plating provided rigid fixation and early functional rehabilitation. All patients healed without complicat

Rare forms of chondroblastoma. Cystic and diaphyseal types.

The authors describe 4 cases of cystic chondroblastoma, three located in the epiphysis and one in the diaphysis. In 2 cases, the tumour macroscopically resembled a simple bone cyst and the tumour tissue consisted of small collections of cells lining the cystic cavity, which was devoid of fluid contents. In the other 2 cases, the tumour macroscopically resembled an aneurysmal bone cyst, but the thin septi that separated the blood-filled lacunae consisted of chondroblastomatous tissue. In this variety of chondroblastoma, curettage of the cystic cavity must be particulary meticulous so as to avoi

Diaphyseal intramedullary osteoid osteoma: an enigmatic subtype.

This retrospective study aimed to evaluate patients with similar clinical and radiological features of diaphyseal intramedullary osteoid osteoma, an enigmatic location subtype. Sixteen patients (11 males and 5 females) with an average age of 12.3 years at the time of presentation were reviewed. The lesion was located in the tibia unilaterally in 10 patients, bilaterally in three, and in the femur unilaterally in three. Diagnosis was established based on the typical clinical presentation of OO and the identification of nidus on computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),

Radial Nerve Paralysis in Diaphyseal Fractures of the Humerus.

One of the most common complications associated with a diaphyseal humeral fracture is the development of a radial nerve injury. We conducted a study to analyze the degree of recovery and prognostic factors associated with radial nerve palsy in patients with diaphyseal humerus fractures. We retrospectively analyzed 28 patients who presented to the Hospital La Fe, Valencia, Spain, with a diaphyseal humerus fracture associated with radial nerve injury between 2010 and 2020. A total of 14.3% (n = 4) of the patients in our cohort had open fractures and 85.7% (n = 24) had closed fractures. There wer

Feline Diaphyseal Fractures: Management and treatment options.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Cats frequently present with diaphyseal fractures, which require treatment in order to achieve a good return to function. These fractures often occur due to significant trauma; for example, as a result of road traffic accidents, high-rise syndrome and dog bite wounds. The first priority is to ensure the patient is systemically well before embarking on any specific surgical treatment of a fracture. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Surgical management of diaphyseal fractures can be challenging due to the surgical approach for some bones being technically demanding, for example because

Establishing a Diaphyseal Femur Fracture Model in Mice.

Bones have a significant regenerative capacity. However, fracture healing is a complex process, and depending on the severity of the lesions and the age and overall health status of the patient, failures can occur, leading to delayed union or nonunion. Due to the increasing number of fractures resulting from high-energy trauma and aging, the development of innovative therapeutic strategies to improve bone repair based on the combination of skeletal/mesenchymal stem/stromal cells and biomimetic biomaterials is urgently needed. To this end, the use of reliable animal models is fundamental to bet

Treatment of diaphyseal non-unions of the ulna and radius.

INTRODUCTION: Non-unions of the forearm often cause severe dysfunction of the forearm as they affect the interosseus membrane, elbow and wrist. Treatment of these non-unions can be challenging due to poor bone stock, broken hardware, scarring and stiffness due to long-term immobilisation. METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed a large cohort of forearm non-unions treated by using a uniform surgical approach during a period of 33 years (1975-2008) in a single trauma centre. All non-unions were managed following the AO-principles of compression plate fixation and autologous bone grafting if needed

A new modular nail for the diaphyseal fractures of the humerus.

Over a period of 5 years, 63 traumatic and eight pathological diaphyseal humeral fractures were treated with a new modular humeral nail. The nail is cannulated, square in shape--with concave sides--and has two different extensions that can be used with either the antegrade or the retrograde approach. Adequate rotational and axial stability is provided without the need for distal locking screws in the majority of fractures, while the need for proximal locking screws during the antegrade procedure is abolished. This study aims to present the 'Garnavos' nail and the results of its use, along with

Diaphyseal sclerotic osteosarcoma presenting as a pathological fracture.

A diaphyseal, intramedullary, highly sclerotic lesion presenting as a pathological fracture, without a periosteal reaction or an appreciable soft tissue component on radiographs was investigated. A discrepancy between the MRI and histopathological findings led to marginal excision of the lesion only to reveal later that it was a sclerotic variety of osteosarcoma. Such a presentation has not been reported in literature as per our knowledge. We forfeited the opportunity of limb salvage by doing initial marginal excision and fixation. In such circumstances, a representative biopsy is critical and

Diaphyseal non-union in the distal phalanx of a child.

Non-union after finger fracture is an infrequent complication. Although well described in adults, there are few reported cases in children. We describe a 6 year-old boy who presented with a non-union of the diaphysis of the distal phalanx three years after a finger tip crush injury.

Interventions for isolated diaphyseal fractures of the ulna in adults.

BACKGROUND: Isolated fractures of the shaft of the ulna, which are often sustained when the forearm is raised to shield against a blow, are generally treated on an out-patient basis. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of various forms of treatment for isolated fractures of the ulnar shaft in adults. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Musculoskeletal Injuries Group specialised register (November 2003), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library Issue 4, 2003), MEDLINE (1966 to November week 2 2003), EMBASE (1981 to 2003 week 51) and CINAHL (1982 to December
