Uterus didelphys with microscopic communication between horns.

The case of a 14-year-old female adolescent, gravida 1, para 0, abortions 1, with a didelphic uterus and a blind vaginal pouch with microscopic communication between horns is reported. Reproductive performance in such cases is usually poor. The challenge of detection and evaluation as well as the genetic-embryologic origin is discussed.

Ectoparasitic and phoretic arthropods of Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana) in central Tennessee.

Thirteen species of ectoparasitic (12) or phoretic (1) arthropods were collected from 26 adult Virginia opossums, Didelphis virginiana, live-trapped from April through September 1987 in Davidson County, Tennessee. The cat flea Ctenocephalides felis and the American dog tick Dermacentor variabilis were the predominant species with respect to mean intensity and prevalence. The macronyssid mite Ornithonyssus wernecki and the atopomelid mite Didelphilichus serrifer, both specific parasites of this host, showed high intensities but low prevalences. Other fleas collected were Cediopsylla simplex, Ct…

The cardiac, oxyntic and pyloric glands in the developing opossum (Didelphis virginiana).

In the opossum the fundic area of the gastric mucosa develops first, and oxyntic glands show early division into gastric pits and glandular components which then grow simultaneously. At 40 d postnatum the oxyntic glands are longer than the gastric pits but in the pyloric glands the pits still are longer than the glands and it is not until the 73rd postnatal day, that pyloric glands are longer than their pits. Development of the cardiac glands is delayed even more and the length of the gland does not surpass that of the pit until about 95 d postnatum. Argyrophil cells are concentrated in the ca

Serum Proteomics Reveals Systemic Responses in Didelphis aurita Naturally Infected with Hepatozoon sp.

Didelphis aurita is a widely distributed neotropical marsupial frequently found in peri-urban environments and known to harbor various pathogens, including hemoparasites of the genus Hepatozoon. However, the systemic physiological responses of naturally infected individuals remain poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize the serum proteomic profile of Didelphis aurita naturally infected with Hepatozoon sp., providing insights into host-parasite interactions and potential biomarkers of infection. Serum samples were analyzed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/…

Didelphis spp. opossums and their parasites in the Americas: A One Health perspective.

Medium sized opossums (Didelphis spp.) are among the most fascinating mammals of the Americas, playing important ecological roles (e.g., dispersal of seeds and control of insect populations) in the environment they inhabit. Nevertheless, as synanthropic animals, they are well adapted to human dwellings, occupying shelters within the cities, peripheral areas, and rural settings. These marsupials can harbor numerous pathogens, which may affect people, pets, and livestock. Among those, some protozoa (e.g., Leishmania infantum, Trypanosoma cruzi, Toxoplasma gondii), helminths (e.g., Ancylostoma ca…

Didelphis albiventris: an overview of unprecedented transcriptome sequencing of the white-eared opossum.

BACKGROUND: The white-eared opossum (Didelphis albiventris) is widely distributed throughout Brazil and South America. It has been used as an animal model for studying different scientific questions ranging from the restoration of degraded green areas to medical aspects of Chagas disease, leishmaniasis and resistance against snake venom. As a marsupial, D. albiventris can also contribute to the understanding of the molecular mechanisms that govern the different stages of organogenesis. Opossum joeys are born after only 13 days, and the final stages of organogenesis occur when the neonates are …

A case of polymelia associated with syndactyly in Didelphis aurita (Wied-Neuwied, 1826).

In January 2018, a young male of Didelphis aurita (Wied-Neuwied, 1826), the Brazilian common opossum, was admitted for veterinary evaluation at the Recovery Clinic of Wild Animals of Estácio de Sá University, CRAS, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, due to the presence of a partially duplicated right hind limb. After x-ray evaluation, polymelia associated with syndactyly was diagnosed. The images revealed the following alterations on the right limb: single femur with increased diameter, two tibiae, two fibulae and absence of hallux. The observed malformations were restricted to the hind right limb, wh…

Granulomatous pneumonia in the opossum (Didelphis virginiana) associated with an intracellular fungal agent.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Two of nine female opossums (Didelphis virginiana) in a closed breeding colony were submitted for necropsy due to a history of poor reproductive performance in the absence of overt clinical disease. On histologic examination, marked granulomatous to pyogranulomatous pneumonia was identified in these animals. METHODS: Lung sections were stained with periodic acid-Schiff and Gomori's methenamine silver nitrate. RESULTS: Pulmonary lesions were characterized by large numbers of foamy macrophages within the alveoli and interstitium, prominent subpleural and peribronchiolar…

Natural resistance of opossum (Didelphis marsupialis) to the mapanare (Bothrops lanceolatus) snake venom.

The inactivation of local and general effects of the Mapanare (Bothrops lanceolatus) venom by Opossum's (Didelphis marsupialis) serum fractions was tested using an in vivo assay and an in vitro preincubation experiment. A serum fraction of the Opossum serum has been obtained by immunochemical purification. It is only present in opossum's protective opossum serum fraction (F-0.1).

Valvular endocarditis associated with experimental Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae infection in the opossum (Didelphis virginiana).

Intravenous inoculation of a wild type isolate of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in opossums resulted in valvular endocarditis in all infected animals. Opossums were inoculated once a week for 3 weeks. Lesions became visible with cardiac ultrasound by week four post-inoculation. Opossums remained clinically normal throughout the experiment, and preinfection body weight was maintained. Other lesions of chronic erysipelas including skin necrosis and arthritis were not found in infected opossums.

Tactile cutaneous representation in cerebellar granule cell layer of the opossum, Didelphis virginiana.

Recent studies of the albino rat revealed extensive cutaneous somatosensory projections to the granule cell (GC) layer of the cerebellar hemispheres and the caudal vermis. These projections are organized asomatotopically in patchy mosaics. To determine whether similar projections exist in a marsupial, we explored the GC layer of the cerebellar cortex of anesthetized Virginia opossums using in-depth microelectrode micromapping and juxtathreshold cutaneous natural stimulation techniques. We found: Somatosensory projections to the GC layer exist throughout the mediolateral extent of the folia of

Response to cryptorchidism of the testis and epididymis of the opossum (Didelphis virginiana).

Adult male opossums, Didelphis virginiana, were rendered hemicryptorchid for 35 days. The cyrptorchid testis exhibited a significant reduction in weight, while the contralateral testis had a compensatory weight gain compared with testes of untreated animals. Histological changes in the cryptorchid testis included fibrosis of the tunica propria, involution of the seminiferous tubules and an apparent increase in the interstitial tissue. Many seminiferous tubules were empty and germinal cells were absent. Some Sertoli cells persisted, but the cytoplasm was vacuolated. Cryptorchid testes were char…

Intrauterine Pregnancy in a Uterus Didelphys Mimicking an Ectopic Pregnancy.

Uterus didelphys is a rare congenital uterine anomaly resulting from the complete failure of fusion of the Müllerian ducts. Early pregnancy in a duplicated uterus can present a significant diagnostic challenge, as the gravid lateralized hemi uterus may be mistaken for an adnexal mass. A 31-year-old woman presented at six weeks of gestation with mild abdominal cramping. A two-dimensional transvaginal ultrasound revealed an empty main uterine cavity and a gestational sac adjacent to the right ovary. Given a serum beta-hCG level of 4,200 mIU/mL and concern for an ectopic pregnancy, urgent diagnos
