Digital trajectories of acculturation: social media practices among a sample of African female domestic workers.

Globalization and cross-cultural migration have intensified the movement of individuals across national and cultural boundaries, particularly among migrants employed in feminized labor sectors. Within these contexts, acculturation is shaped not only by face-to-face interactions but also by engagement with digital media. This study examines how and why African female domestic workers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) use social media and how these practices shape their acculturation experiences. Using a qualitative research design, the study draws on in-depth interviews with African female dome…

Media consumption and self-perceived multilingual identity in short-video vlog-assisted informal digital language learning.

BACKGROUND: Short video vlogs have become a prominent site of informal digital language learning, yet most research has emphasized skills, motivation, and willingness to communicate, with comparatively little attention to social affective and identity related self-perceptions. This study examined how short video vlog assisted informal digital language learning is associated with self-perceived multilingual identity, whether social presence and learning engagement are modeled as serial intermediate variables, and whether digital literacy conditions these associations. METHODS: A cross sectiona

The lack of a clear definition of the Mediterranean diet in the scientific literature and the documented proliferation of nutrition misinformation on the internet suggest the potential for confusion among consumers seeking web-based Mediterranean diet information. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a social media content analysis of information about the Mediterranean diet on the influential social media platform, TikTok, to examine public discourse about the diet and identify potential areas of misi

Impact of smartphone digital photography, email, and media communication on emergency room visits post-hypospadias repair.

INTRODUCTION: Advances in communication technology are shaping our medical practice. To date, there is no clear evidence that this mode of communication will have any effect on unnecessary postoperative emergency room (ER) visits. We aim to evaluate the effect of email and media communication with application of smartphone digital photography on post-hypospadias repair ER visit rates. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included all patients who underwent hypospadias repair performed by a single surgeon from October 2014 to November 2015. Patients were categorized into two groups: Group A

Effect of Technology and Digital Media Use on Adolescent Health and Development: Protocol for a Multimethod Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Technology and digital media (TDM) use is integral to modern adolescence; adolescents have been labeled as "digital natives," since they have had exposure to digital technology for their entire lives. Previous evidence has illustrated TDM's connections with adolescent risk behaviors such as increased alcohol use and social media exposure, as well as relationships with adolescent well-being such as improved socioemotional health and social media connections with peers. Although several recent review articles have described both the benefits and risks of technology use, most individu…

Examining the digital connections: comprehensive HIV knowledge, awareness of antiretroviral therapy, and digital media use among adolescents and young adults in a middle-income country.

There remains a gap in identifying factors that influence HIV knowledge among younger people in middle-income countries who report higher Internet access and social media use. In this study, the association of use of two types of digital media - Internet media and social media - for information about sex with comprehensive HIV knowledge and ART awareness among youth aged 15-24 was measured. Data from the 2021 Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study in the Philippines (n = 10,949) were used, and the adolescent health literacy framework was adopted to obtain parsimonious weighted logistic regr…

Network dynamics between digital media use and depressive symptomatology: A computational phenotyping approach using ecological momentary assessment.

BACKGROUND: Despite extensive investigation into relationships between digital media use and psychological well-being, understanding of specific temporal dynamics and underlying mechanisms remains inadequate. METHODS: This study employed intensive longitudinal methods to examine the complex network relationships between digital behavior patterns and depressive symptoms. We collected ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data from 1642 young adults (ages 18-29, 58.2 % female, 42.3 % currently enrolled in undergraduate programs) across 60 days, yielding 358,962 observations capturing smartphone…

Digital media use and cognitive networks in medical students: linking screen time with intelligence and academic performance.

INTRODUCTION: Digital media use has expanded rapidly among medical students, raising concerns about its impact on cognitive function and academic achievement. However, specific links between screen time and distinct facets of cognition (such as fluid vs. crystallized intelligence), as well as their combined impact on academic performance, remain underexplored in medical education. PURPOSE: This study explored how digital screen time and related behaviors are associated with different dimensions of intelligence (fluid and crystallized), attention, and academic performance in second-year medica…

Digital Media Literacy Group for Adolescents in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: Prospective Multicenter Single-Arm Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital media literacy (DML) may help adolescents to handle online risks, misinformation, digital violence, and problematic media use more reflectively. However, structured interventions for adolescents in child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP), particularly in inpatient and day-treatment settings, remain scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and perceived usefulness of a manualized DML group for adolescents in CAP and explored preliminary changes in digital self-efficacy and critical media literacy (CML). Does putting down your smartphone make you happier? the effects of restricting digital media on well-being.

Both scientists and laypeople have become increasingly concerned about smartphones, especially their associated digital media (e.g., email, news, gaming, and dating apps) and social media (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat). Recent correlational research links substantial declines in Gen Z well-being to digital and social media use, yet other work suggests the effects are small and unnoteworthy. To help further disentangle correlation from causation, we conducted a preregistered 8-day experimental deprivation study with Gen Z individuals (N = 338). Participants were randomly assigned to one …
