The use of cardiac pacemakers is increasing worldwide. Infective endocarditis from a pacemaker lead is a rare, but one of the most severe co … his case report is about a 70-year-old diabetic male who presented to the emergency department with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), cardiac and liver failure. He was diagnosed with pacemaker infective endocarditis, which was ultimately fatal.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a pathological systemic condition resulting from aberrant activation of the coagulation system. It is characterised by the release and activation of procoagulants into the blood, with an associated consumption coagulopathy. Its association with solid and haematological malignancies is well described in literature. This case describes an elderly man, known to have prostate cancer, who following transurethral resection of the prostate developed DIC with haematuria, spontaneous ecchymoses and mucosal bleeding. Subsequent investigations revealed a pr…

Malignancy is a common cause of disseminated intravascular coagulation and usually presents as a chronic disorder in solid organ tumours. We present a rare case of recurrent acute disseminated intravascular coagulation in neuroendocrine carcinoma after manipulation, firstly, by core biopsy and, later, by cytotoxic therapy causing a release of procoagulants and cytokines from lysed tumour cells. This is reminiscent of tumour lysis syndrome where massive quantities of intracellular electrolytes and nucleic acid are released, causing acute metabolic imbalance and renal failure. This case highligh…

Thyroid storm is a rare disorder. Early recognition and treatment are essential in reducing morbidity and mortality from this disease. Described here is a case of atypical thyroid storm (normothermic, normotensive), accompanied by multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, including disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. This case highlights the importance of recognizing atypical presentations of thyroid storm in addition to the multiple systems that can be involved.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence, etiology and outcome of treatment in obstetric patients complicated by overt disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Medical records of 25 obstetric patients with a diagnosis of DIC in Songklanagarind University Hospital from January 1993 to December 2005 were reviewed
RESULTS: The incidence of overt DIC was I per 1,355 deliveries. Median maternal age was 30 years (range 17-44 years). Median duration of hospital stay was 10 days (range 0-32 days). The main associated conditions included abruptio placentae in 6 patients (24%), …

The authors report a case of chronic dissection of the aorta discovered during the evaluation of disseminated intravascular coagulation. The first signs of bleeding occurred 4 years after the initial aortic trauma at the time of unclamping of the aorta during an aorto-coronary bypass. This case was characterised by the severity of coagulation abnormalities, the severe thrombocytopenia and that of platelet aggregation events.

A 23 year old woman died within six hours of admission from acute disseminated intravascular coagulation. Fusobacterium necrophorum, a Gram negative anaerobic organism, was isolated as a single pathogen from the blood cultures. This association has not previously been reported.

The purpose of this paper is fourfold: First, to confirm the rarity of melanotic meningioma, as we have found only 11 reported cases; second to demonstrate that this tumor is not always totally pigmented, a fact that has not been mentioned before; third, to show an unusual recurrence as a hemorrhagic cystic meningioma 10 years and 8 months after removal; and fourth, to describe the association of disseminated intravascular coagulation, a rare disorder with brain tumors.

A 27-year-old white woman with anorexia, abdominal pain, arthralgias, spiking fever, diarrhea, and bizarre neurologic symptoms developed yellowish-gray plaques surrounded by hemorrhage in the posterior choroid of both eyes. Progressive thrombocytopenia, hypofibrinoginemia, and accelerated fibrinolysis supported the diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Death occurred from complications of DIC. Widespread thrombotic occlusion of small blood vessels was present in numerous organs, including the posterior choriocapillaris and larger choroidal vessels of both eyes. Other ocula…

An outbreak of chronic liver disease was investigated in a kennel of dogs. Anorexia, depression, polyuria, polydipsia, icterus and a termina … ls of aflatoxin B in the commercial dog food being fed. A subacute hepatitis was found on necropsy. Disseminated intravascular coagulation was suspected as the cause of the hemorrhage in these cases and treatment was instituted.

Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) is a complex syndrome causing generalized micro thrombi formation, which causes consumption of coagulation factors resulting in secondary fibrinolysis. It is not uncommon in children. Due to its highly complex and variable pathophysiology and interrelationship with hemostatic system, DIC does not show any uniformity in presentation. Although, there are many forms of DIC, clinical picture of DIC is dominant with bleeding. Besides, there is no gold standard investigation to diagnose DIC. Many therapeutic approaches are not validated and controversial.…

Hematological malignancies that are frequently complicated with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) include acute leukemia, high-grade malignant lymphoma, and cases undergoing certain immunotherapy or cellular therapy. In typical cases of DIC associated with hematological malignancies, bleeding symptoms are aggravated not only by the activated fibrinolytic system but also by thrombocytopenia induced by the underlying disease or anticancer therapy, and their management is of critical clinical interest. As such, antithrombotic therapy with heparinoids carries significant risk of bleedin…

This paper discusses the diagnostic findings and treatment options for DIC associated with vascular abnormalities based on the "Clinical practice guidelines for management of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in Japan 2024" released in early 2025. The guidelines define vascular abnormalities as aortic aneurysm, aortic dissection, vasculitis syndromes, and vascular malformations. DIC with enhanced fibrinolysis is a type of DIC often observed in association with vascular abnormalities. Key diagnostic tests for DIC include coagulation activation markers such as thrombin-antithrombin co…
