Accelerated Hg loss and increased methylmercury covary with soil organic matter mineralization and dissolved organic matter humification under warming conditions in permafrost marsh, Northeast China.

Currently, little is available on how mercury (Hg) methylation couples with soil organic matter decomposition in degraded permafrost in high northern latitudes, where the climate is becoming warmer rapidly. Here, we revealed the complex interactions between soil organic matter (SOM) mineralization, dissolved organic matter (DOM) and methylmercury (MeHg) production based on an 87-day anoxic warming incubation experiment. Results supported remarkably promotion effects of warming on MeHg production, by 130%-205% on average. Total mercury (THg) loss under warming treatment depended on marsh types …

Soil dissolved organic matter dynamics under dryland restoration: disentangling land use, vegetation, and management controls.

INTRODUCTION: Dryland soils are highly sensitive to land use change and restoration, yet the relative influence of land use and associated vegetation and management conditions on soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) remains poorly understood. METHODS: This study evaluated DOM quantity and quality across five land use types (cropland, orchard, grassland, shrubland and forestland) and the additional differences associated with vegetation and management within specific land use systems. Soils were sampled from sixteen sites and three depths (0-20, 30-50, and 60-80 cm), including naturally restore…

Chlorination amplifies source-dependent photochemical divergence between microplastic-derived and fulvic-acid dissolved organic matter.

Chlorination is widely applied before the discharge of wastewater effluent into receiving waters, yet the distinct response of artificial and non-plastic dissolved organic matter (DOM) to chlorination remains unclear. Here, fulvic-acid (FA), expanded polystyrene-derived DOM (EPS-DOM) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)-derived DOM (PBAT-DOM) were compared to determine how chlorination-induced optical and molecular transformations regulate sulfamethazine (SMT) photodegradation. Chlorination caused pronounced source-dependent DOM restructuring. The E2/E3 ratio increased from 4.60 to 42.9…

Evaluation of extraction solvents for untargeted metabolomics in characterizing Antarctic cryoconite hole dissolved organic matter.

BACKGROUND: Cryoconite holes, a dynamic habitat in Antarctica and other glaciers, are glacial biological hotspots with high biogeochemical turnover rates, significantly influencing carbon and nitrogen cycling within climate-sensitive glacial ecosystems. They are found on glaciers worldwide, highlighting their global importance, and are likely to become more widespread as glaciers continue to retreat. Despite their global occurrence and sensitivity to climate warming, untargeted metabolomic studies of their dissolved organic matter (DOM) remain scarce, largely due to very low biomass, harsh sam…

Dissolved organic matter composition influences catalytic oxidation behavior and product evolution in real water matrices.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) strongly influences catalytic oxidation processes through complex matrix effects. Despite the widely recognized matrix effects of DOM, the relationships between DOM composition, product evolution, and transformation preference during catalytic oxidation remain poorly understood. In this study, nine water matrices with distinct DOM compositional characteristics were investigated to distinguish the effects of DOM composition from organic loading under TOC-normalized conditions during photocatalytic periodate activation. Results showed that DOM induced both promotiv…

Mechanistic Insights into Mercury Photoreduction: Effects of Dissolved Organic Matter and Inorganic Carbon in Seawater.

Atmospheric mercury (Hg) is primarily derived from marine evasion of Hg(0) produced through the photoreduction of Hg(II) in seawater. Although the mechanisms of Hg(II) photoreduction in seawater have been extensively investigated, the coupled effects of dissolved inorganic carbon and specific dissolved organic matter (DOM) structures remain unresolved. Here, we report the pseudo-first-order rate constants (kr) for the gross photoreduction of Hg(II) in the presence of thiols in deionized water (DIW), phosphate buffer solution (PBS), and artificial seawater (ASW) under UV-A irradiation. For alip…

Tertiary amine-mediated chlorination of dissolved organic matter: Unraveling molecular reorganization and enhanced photochemical reactivity.

The transformation behaviors of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were investigated during chlorination accelerated by trimethylamine (TMA, a representative tertiary amine). This study explored the transformation patterns of DOM during TMA-accelerated chlorination using Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) and humic acid (SRHA) as model DOM. Spectroscopic techniques, FT-ICR MS, and machine learning were combined to reveal molecular property evolution. TMA enhanced the oxidative degradation of aromatic structures and quenched characteristic fluorophores, leading to reduced molecular weight and aromat…

Design parameters and electrical conductivity shape dissolved organic matter aromaticity in full-scale constructed wetlands.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) often serve as final polishing systems before wastewater enters receiving waters, where active biogeochemical reactions can reshape dissolved organic matter (DOM) and influence various ecological processes in downstream aquatic systems. However, DOM variations and their associated factors in full-scale CWs remain poorly constrained. Combining a field survey of 57 sites across 14 full-scale CWs in Shandong, China, with laboratory experiments, this study examined changes in DOM characteristics, the key factors associated with these changes, and their potential roles. T…

Controls on the apparent quantum yield for photomineralization of dissolved organic matter in arctic freshwaters.

The oxidation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to carbon dioxide by sunlight (photomineralization) can account for up to 30% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from inland surface waters in the Arctic. Water-column photomineralization rates depend on the magnitude and shape of the photomineralization apparent quantum yield spectrum (φPM,λ), which few studies have quantified directly. Here, we used a light-emitting diode (LED)-based approach to directly quantify φPM,λ of CO2 from photomineralization in arctic surface waters exposed to increasing amounts of narrow-banded light at ultraviolet and v…

Transformation of dissolved organic matter in membrane-concentrated landfill leachate during Cu-Fenton-biological treatment.

Membrane-concentrated landfill leachate (MCLL) is a highly concentrated and recalcitrant wastewater with remarkably low biodegradability. In this study, a multi-stage Cu-Fenton oxidation coupled with biological process was proposed for MCLL treatment. Importantly, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry was employed to unveil the molecular transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in MCLL during this integrated treatment process. The multi-stage Cu-Fenton process exhibited a high capacity to remove CHON compounds, resulting in a decrease in their relative abundance f…

Spatial variation of anthropogenic disturbances within watersheds determines dissolved organic matter composition exported to oceans.

Global land-use changes alter the delivery of fluvial dissolved organic matter (DOM) along land-to-sea continuum. To study how spatial variations in watershed anthropogenic disturbances control chemodiversity and reactivity of DOM exported to oceans, we used fluorescent and ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry to investigate spatial and seasonal variations of DOM properties along two subtropical coastal rivers with contrasting anthropogenic land-use distributions (North and West tributaries of Jiulong River, southeast China). Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration and humic- and prote…

Exploring the combination characteristics of dissolved organic matter with erythromycin in a soil infiltration system.

Erythromycin (ERY), as a common macrolides antibiotic, is widely used for sterilisation and disinfection of humans or livestock whose migration and transformation in the surface water environment are significantly related to dissolved organic matter (DOM). The characteristics of DOM can be greatly influenced by the complexation between ERY with itself in soil infiltration system. Using spectroscopic techniques (excitation-emission matrices, parallel factor analysis, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopies) to explore the complexation properties of each DOM co…

Photochemical Production of Carbon Monoxide from Dissolved Organic Matter: Role of Lignin Methoxyarene Functional Groups.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the second most abundant identified product of dissolved organic matter (DOM) photodegradation after CO2, but its formation mechanism remains unknown. Previous work showed that aqueous photodegradation of methoxy-substituted aromatics (ArOCH3) produces CO considerably more efficiently than aromatic carbonyls. Following on this precedent, we propose that the methoxy aromatic groups of lignin act as the C source for the photochemical formation of CO from terrestrial DOM via a two-step pathway: formal hydrolytic demethylation to methanol and methanol oxidation to CO. To te…

Effects of terrestrial dissolved organic matter on a bloom of the toxic cyanobacteria, Raphidiopsis raciborskii.

The concentration of coloured terrestrial dissolved organic matter (tDOM) from vegetation appears to be increasing in lakes in some regions of the world, leading to the term brownification. The light attenuating effect of coloured tDOM on phytoplankton growth has been a major focus of attention, but the phytotoxic effects of tDOM, particularly on cyanobacterial blooms, are less well understood. This mesocosm study tested whether coloured tDOM, leached from the leaves of a Eucalyptus tree species, inhibited a naturally occurring bloom of the toxic cyanobacterium, Raphidiopsis raciborskii, in a …

Impacts of spectral characteristics of dissolved organic matter on methylmercury contents in peatlands, Northeast China.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in promoting or suppressing methylmercury (MeHg) production in wetlands. However, the effects of DOM spectral characteristics on MeHg levels remain poorly understood in boreal peatlands in Northeast China, where is undergoing remarkable climate warming. In the present work, soil samples were collected from 22 peatlands in the Greater Khingan Mountains (GKM) to test the hypothesis that DOM spectral properties control MeHg levels. DOM was characterized by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy; the three-dimensional fluorescence exc…

Sorption of Pb(II) onto biochar is enhanced through co-sorption of dissolved organic matter.

Biochar plays an important role in controlling migration of pollutants in soils. However, little information is available on the interactions between soil-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM), biochar and soluble metal species. The aim of this work was to present the adsorption process of soil DOM by biochar (corn straw biochar produced at 700 °C) and to determine whether co-sorption of DOM would change the affinity for Pb(II). The adsorption rates of biochar and biochar + DOM for Pb(II) were best fitted with a pseudo-second order kinetic model, and the equilibrium adsorption isotherm data a…

Photolysis of atrazine: Role of triplet dissolved organic matter and limitations of sensitizers and quenchers.

Atrazine, a widely used herbicide, is susceptible to photolysis. The role of triplet excited states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (3CDOM*) in the photolysis of atrazine, however, is not well understood. The direct photolysis of atrazine under irradiation sources (natural sunlight/environmentally relevant simulated solar light) and its indirect photochemical reactivity with model triplet photosensitizers (benzophenone, 2-acetonaphthone, 3'-methoxy-acetophenone, 4-carboxybenzophenone, rose bengal, methylene blue, and anthraquinone-2-sulphonate) was investigated. The reactivity of the …

Urban infrastructure influences dissolved organic matter quality and bacterial metabolism in an urban stream network.

1. Urban streams are degraded by a suite of factors, including burial beneath urban infrastructure, such as roads or parking lots, which eliminates light and reduces direct organic matter inputs to streams from riparian zones. These changes to stream metabolism and terrestrial carbon contribution will likely have consequences for organic matter metabolism by microbes and dissolved organic matter (DOM) use patterns in streams. Respiration by heterotrophic biofilms drives the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, but we lack a clear understanding of how stream burial and seasonality affect microbial c…

Dissolved organic matter drives fraction-specific mobilization and transformation of redox-sensitive constituents in groundwater.

The anomalous mobilization of redox-sensitive elements (Fe, Mn, N, As, and P) in riparian groundwater is frequently associated with dissolved organic matter (DOM) influx; however, the contrasting roles of labile protein-like and recalcitrant humic-like DOM remain poorly resolved. Here, we employed tyrosine (Tyr) and humic acid (HA) as model compounds for labile, protein-like DOM and recalcitrant, humic-like DOM, respectively, and conducted gradient incubation experiments (0, 20, and 100 mg/L) under both sterile and non-sterile conditions. By integrating hydrochemical time-series, solid-phase s…

The conservative mixing behavior of dissolved organic matter: Assessment of size distributions and optical properties.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous and influences pollutant transport, photochemistry, and water treatment. As a heterogeneous mixture, current theories suggest that DOM forms supramolecular assemblies; yet, common statistical methods assume the principles of additivity and conservative mixing. This study evaluates whether mixtures of DOM sources follow conservative mixing principles as measured by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) coupled with organic carbon, absorbance, and fluorescence detectors. Blends of DOM isolates and wastewater effluent were evaluated using one-, two-, and…
