A case of in utero spondylothoracic dysostoses is diagnosed during a routine third trimester ultrasound scan in a low-risk patient. Ultrasound showed spine deformation, hemivertebrae and crab-like ribs. The newborn had no other associated anomalies except inguinal hernia, and karyotype was normal. Bidimensional and 3-4D ultrasound imaging as well as radiograph of the fetus and photos of the newborn are presented and discussed. Sporadic cases are difficult to diagnose and classify, as they are probably due to genetic heterogenicity. Sporadic cases of hemivertebrae are rare and not always lethal…

Frontofacial advancement by distraction osteogenesis using the rigid external distraction device has become an accepted treatment for the deformity associated with craniofacial dysostoses (e.g., Crouzon, Apert, and Pfeiffer syndromes). The technical and physiological principles of osteogenesis distraction are well understood. This study documents the pattern of calcification at the osteotomy sites after distraction by analysis of serial three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scans. The CT scans of 25 patients (11 with Crouzon, 6 with Apert, and 8 with Pfeiffer syndrome) were analyzed. Elev…

Facial dysostoses are clinically and genetically heterogeneous conditions characterized by congenital craniofacial anomalies which result from abnormal development of the first two pharyngeal arches and their derivatives during embryogenesis. Mandibulofacial dysostosis Guion-Almeida type (MFDGA) is a rare and relatively new syndrome described in the literature, first identified by Guion-Almeida et al. in 2000 and 2006. Another 108 cases have been documented after that. Prenatal diagnosis of this syndrome has not been described yet. Here we present the prenatal ultrasound findings in a case whe…

The only family known so far to have developed cranio-facial dysostose, has been the object of a new study. Since 1962, 3 new infants affected by this disease were born and another 3 died. The syndrome is characterized by an important growth deficit, small cranium with thin skull bone, a peculiar facies with marked hypoplasia of the middle portion and mandible, multiple and various teeth anomalies. The long bones are short and bent; thickening of the cortex occurred during puberty or in the post-puberal period and seems to increase with age. The mean life-span seems normal. The syndrome is tra
