Circulating methods of placental protein 5 (PP5) were studied in patients with severe preeclampsia and eclampsia. Elevated PP5 levels were frequently observed in the eclampsia group. This elevation may be due to disturbance in endogenous coagulation mechanisms at the placental site.

Preeclampsia is a multisystem disorder after the 20(th) week of gestation, that is usually associated with raised blood pressure, proteinuria, and pathologic edema. Eclampsia is defined as the occurrence of conculsions in association with the syndrome of preeclampsia. In Europe and other developed countries eclampsia complicates approximately 1 in 2,000 deliveries, while in developing countries estimates vary between 1 in 100 to 1 in 1,700. 44% of seizures occur postnatally, the remainder being antepartum (38%) or intrapartum (18%). Although rare, eclampsia probably accounts for 50,000 materna…

A review of eclampsia in Kelantan was undertaken from 1983-1988. There were 146 documented cases in the state (66 per 100,000 deliveries). Eight maternal deaths occurred. Sixty seven (45.9%) were primigravida. Six of the 79 multiparous women developed eclampsia for the first time following remarriages to new partners. The multisystem dysfunction resulting from eclampsia resulted in varied maternal complications. Fatal cerebral haemorrhage (3 cases), acute pulmonary oedema (8 cases), acute renal failure (6 cases), HELLP Syndrome (8 cases) and acute abruptio placentae were the commoner complicat…

Eclampsia is a prevailing hypertensive disorder that poses more significant risks to mothers and neonates globally. This review aimed to investigate eclampsia [preeclampsia and postpartum eclampsia (posteclampsia)] and the supportive role of dietary and lifestyle management. The review was compiled by searching various engines such as Google Scholar, Research Gate, BASE, PubMed Central, National Center for Biotechnology Information, and other related search engines. Eclampsia is believed to involve genetic and nongenetic factors, although the precise underlying mechanism remains unclear. Never…

BACKGROUND: Cerebral complications of pre-eclampsia are a leading cause of maternal mortality. Better understanding of the pathophysiology may enable the development of novel strategies to protect the maternal brain. We aimed to investigate blood-brain barrier injury and neuroinflammatory pathways in women with eclampsia and pre-eclampsia compared to normotensive pregnancies.
METHODS: This observational cross-sectional study conducted between March 2021 and June 2023, included women with eclampsia, pre-eclampsia, and normotensive pregnancies admitted to Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, South Af…

BACKGROUND: Magnesium sulphate is the drug of choice for the prevention and treatment of women with eclampsia. Regimens for administration of this drug have evolved over the years, but there is no clarity on the comparative benefits or harm of alternative regimens. This is an update of a review first published in 2010.
OBJECTIVES: To assess if one magnesium sulphate regimen is better than another when used for the care of women with pre-eclampsia or eclampsia, or both, to reduce the risk of severe morbidity and mortality for the woman and her baby.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched Cochrane Pregna…

OBJECTIVE: This study examined risk factors for perinatal mortality associated with anaesthesia for caesarean delivery in patients with pre-eclampsia/eclampsia. The study is apt because perinatal mortality rate is one of the indicators of health status of pregnant women, new mothers and their newborns. The information obtained may help to assess changes in public health policy and practise amongst women of child-bearing age.
AIM: The role of anaesthesia in perinatal outcome in pre-eclamptics.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: The hospital records (cases notes, labour ward and newborn special care unit …

BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are important causes of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality in the developing countries. There is need to provide the most effective management to pre-eclamptic and eclamptic patients. There is now evidence that magnesium sulphate is the most effective anticonvulsant.
METHOD: In this article , a literature review was made on the contribution of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia to maternal mortality and how it can be curtailed by the use of magnesium sulphate.
RESULTS: The drug is administered by the Pritchard or Zuspan regimen, although modificat…

Over the last decade there has been an increase in the use of MgSO4 for the prevention of seizures in women with severe pre-eclampsia or eclampsia. At the Rotunda Hospital it is regularly used for this purpose. The aim of this study was to audit the use of MgSO4 at the hospital, to determine whether the drug was being used according to the hospital's protocol and to observe its effectiveness in the prevention of eclampsia in our population. A retrospective chart review over the two years from 1/1/2000 to 31/12/2001 was undertaken. Outcome measures assessed were; Patient selection, Administrati…

The management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia with chlormethiazole is reviewed. Chlormethiazole, magnesium sulphate and benzodiazepines were found to be easy to administer, rapidly acting and effective in controlling convulsions. Respiratory depression in the fetus was found to be shorter lived when using chlormethiazole than the other two treatments.

A 36-year-old woman, who had given birth once before, had an eclamptic epileptic seizure eight days after caesarean delivery of healthy premature twins. Severe headache and loss of vision, leading to blindness, had not been recognised as prodromal signs by the healthcare professionals involved. Thereafter, she suffered a generalised epileptic seizure with tongue bite. She recovered fully after treatment with magnesium sulphate and nifedipine. Eclampsia is a severe condition with high rates of maternal complications, such as abruptio placentae, disseminated intravascular coagulation, neurologic…
