Ecology: Electrical Cable Bacteria Save Marine Life.

Animals at the bottom of the sea survive oxygen depletion surprisingly often, and a new study identifies cable bacteria in the sediment as the saviors. The bacterial electrical activity creates an iron 'carpet', trapping toxic hydrogen sulfide.

Agricultural land usage transforms nitrifier population ecology.

Application of nitrogen fertilizer has altered terrestrial ecosystems. Ammonia is nitrified by ammonia and nitrite-oxidizing microorganisms, converting ammonia to highly mobile nitrate, contributing to the loss of nitrogen, soil nutrients and production of detrimental nitrogen oxides. Mitigating these costs is of critical importance to a growing bioenergy industry. To resolve the impact of management on nitrifying populations, amplicon sequencing of markers associated with ammonia and nitrite-oxidizing taxa (ammonia monooxygenase-amoA, nitrite oxidoreductase-nxrB, respectively) was conducted f

Human microbial ecology: lactobacilli, probiotics, selective decontamination.

Health care-associated infections are closely associated with different medical interventions which interrupt the balance of human microbiot … ity to vancomycin, cefoxitin, ciprofloxacin and some new tetracyclines. We have relied on microbial ecology data showing that the GI tracts of adults and the elderly are simultaneously colonised at least with several (four to a maximum of 12) Lactobacillus species expressing variable intrinsic insusceptibility to the aforementioned antimicrobials, accordi …

Organophosphorus-degrading bacteria: ecology and industrial applications.

The first organophosphorus (OP) compound-degrading bacterial strain was isolated from a paddy field in the Philippines in 1973. Since then, several phylogenetically distinct bacteria that can degrade OP by co-metabolism, or use OPs as a source of carbon, phosphorus or nitrogen, have been isolated from different parts of the world. There is huge potential for industrial applications of OP-degrading bacteria. Important advances in our understanding of the microbiology, genomics and evolution of OP-degrading bacteria have been made over the past four decades, and are discussed in this review.

Physiological ecology of overwintering in hatchling turtles.

Temperate species of turtles hatch from eggs in late summer. The hatchlings of some species leave their natal nest to hibernate elsewhere on land or under water, whereas others usually remain inside the nest until spring; thus, post-hatching behavior strongly influences the hibernation ecology and physiology of this age class. Little is known about the habitats of and environmental conditions affecting aquatic hibernators, although laboratory studies suggest that chronically hypoxic sites are inhospitable to hatchlings. Field biologists have long been intrigued by the environmental conditions …

Tularemia is a disease caused by several subspecies of Francisella tularensis, although the severity of the disease varies greatly from subs … for better molecular epidemiological investigations and more precise ecological analysis. Tularemia ecology is still only partially understood, with many knowledge gaps about the disease reservoir and vectors. Molecular analysis has identified a major population split within F. tularensis subsp. tularensis that points toward distinctive ecological adaptat …

Importance of ecology in Aedes aegypti control.

Aedes aegypti is one of the world's most widely distributed mosquitos and is of considerable medical importance as a vector of dengue and yellow fever. Not surprisingly therefore there has been more written on its biology than any other mosquito. The present paper summarizes ecological studies undertaken on this vector, including those on pre-adult mortalities, life-tables, adult dispersal and survival rates. In discussing surveillance techniques it is pointed out there are still no reliable methods for monitoring adult populations. The importance of the resting habits of adults and house cons

Special circumstances: Mountains called "Los Andes", the Humbolt maritime current, subtropical region; which makes the peruvian territory present the ecosystem which influence the fauna, flora, and pothology. Contain diseases like parasite dermatosis (mal de Pinto, verruga peruana, leishmaniasis, blastomycosis and pain) have close relation with the different ecosystem of the peruvian territory. This study only includes these dermatosis and are resumed as follows: The disease called, mal del Pinto is only diffused in the arid coast, andean valleys and the virgin forest (it is found in altitudes

Epidemiology and ecology of sporotrichosis in Japan.

Some characteristics in epidemiology and ecology of sporotrichosis in Japan are summarized as follows: 1) In some areas of Japan, sporotrichosis shows relatively high incidence. 2) Frequent onset of the infection in the cold season. 3) Preponderance of the infection in females. 4) Preponderance of the infection in children and aged persons. 5) Predilection of lesions on the face of children as well as on the upper extremity in the case of adolescent and adult patients. 6) Familial occurrence. 7) High frequency of demonstration of the parasite in tissue.

The ecology of Chagas disease in Chile.

Chagas disease probably affects over half a million people in Chile, principally in rural communities in the fertile valleys of the arid 'norte chico' region, north of Santiago. The main domestic vector is Triatoma infestans, but Triatoma spinolai, although mainly in rocky sylvatic and peridomestic ecotopes, also invades houses. Since the Spanish invasion in the sixteenth century, and particularly during the last 100 years, the endemic region has suffered an ecological breakdown, largely due to excessive timbering and over-grazing, which has led to a denuded landscape with severe loss of agric
