A minimally invasive reduction and synthesis method for calcaneal fractures: the "Brixian bridge" technique.

Calcaneal fractures are difficult to treat because of their often-related sequelae. The authors present a simple, rapid, economic, and easy-to-perform technique that uses percutaneously positioned Kirschner wires plus a plaster cast for the reduction and stabilization of certain calcaneal fractures. A review of the relevant literature is also provided.

SARS-CoV-2 infection remodels the host protein thermal stability landscape.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a global threat to human health and has compromised economic stability. In addition to the development of an effective vaccine, it is imperative to understand how SARS-CoV-2 hijacks host cellular machineries on a system-wide scale so that potential host-directed therapies can be developed. In situ proteome-wide abundance and thermal stability measurements using thermal proteome profiling (TPP) can inform on global changes in protein activity. Here we adapted TPP to high biosafety conditions amenable to SARS-CoV-2 handling. We …

The economic costs of martial disruption for young women over the past two decades.

This paper examines the economic costs of separation and divorce for young women in the United States from the late 1960s through the late 1980s. Broadened opportunities for women outside marriage may have alleviated some of the severe economic costs of marital disruption for women. This paper contrasts the experiences of two cohorts of young women: those who married and separated or divorced in the late 1960s through the mid-1970s and those who experienced these events in the 1980s. Based on panel data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Youth 1979-1988. Young Women 1968-1978, and Young

Epidemiology and control of bovine babesiosis in South Africa.

Babesiosis is the cause of serious economic losses in South Africa and involves most areas with an annual rainfall of more than 400 mm. Both Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis are present and both are considered to be important. The vectors, distribution and factors influencing enzootic stability of both species are discussed. Except in some areas only marginally suitable for ticks, and where tick control alone may be adequate, control by immunisation is recommended. Short term prevention can be achieved by chemoprophylaxis.

An economic evaluation of thermostable vaccines in Cambodia, Ghana and Bangladesh.

This paper evaluates the incremental health and programmatic cost impacts of new vaccine products, as compared to the standard vaccine products in multi-dose vials in Cambodia, Ghana, and Bangladesh. The authors use a cost-effectiveness model to estimate the impacts of introducing four thermostable vaccines with single-dose presentations: measles, yellow fever, bacille Calmette-Guérin, and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis-hepatitis B. The effectiveness of all of the vaccines increases with the thermostable formats. The incremental costs associated with the introduction of thermostable vaccines inc

A Fast and Highly Stable Aqueous Calcium-Ion Battery for Sustainable Energy Storage.

Aqueous alkali-ion batteries are gaining traction as a low-cost, sustainable alternative to conventional organic lithium-ion batteries. However, the rapid degradation of commonly used electrode materials, such as Prussian Blue Analogs and carbonyl-based organic compounds, continues to challenge the economic viability of these devices. While stability issues can be addressed by employing highly concentrated water-in-salt electrolytes, this approach often requires expensive and, in many cases, fluorinated salts. Here, we show that replacing monovalent K+ ions with divalent Ca2+ ions in the elect

Microencapsulated phage composites with increased gastrointestinal stability for the oral treatment of Salmonella colonization in chicken.

Salmonella infection, one of the common epidemics in the livestock and poultry breeding industry, causes great economic losses worldwide. At present, antibiotics are the most commonly used treatment for Salmonella infection, but the widespread use of antibiotics has increased drug resistance to Salmonella. Phage therapy has gradually become an alternative method to control Salmonella infection. However, phage, a specific virus that can infect bacteria, has poor stability and is prone to inactivation during treatment. Microencapsulated phage microspheres can effectively solve this problem. Labor mobility buffers cascading supply-chain losses from occupational heat stress.

Escalating global temperatures threaten economic stability by worsening occupational heat stress and reducing workforce productivity. Despite advancements in macroeconomic modeling, current risk assessments rely on coarse annual aggregations and ignore internal labor mobility, thereby masking highly unequal sub-national vulnerabilities and underestimating how labor mobility buffers cascading supply-chain losses. Here we present a high-resolution, agent-based dynamic supply chain network model that integrates empirical daily mobility data across 313 Chinese cities to quantify the spatiotemporal…
