Residential environment, human behavior and socio-economic status in transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis in central Iran.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a vector-borne disease occurred through the bite of sandflies. Due to impact of environmental factors on the disease, this study aimed to assess the association between socio-economic status (SES), domestic, peri-domestic, and human behavior factors and the transmission of CL in Isfahan province in central Iran. This case-control study was conducted from March 2021 till March 2022 on 322 participants. Cases and controls were selected among CL patients and people with no history of leishmaniasis respectively by cluster random sampling method in a ratio of 1:1. A

Beyond the jab: Modeling HIV vaccine acceptance in sexual and gender minorities with behavioral economic demand.

This study was an investigation of the utility of behavioral economic demand curves (quantitative models showing how consumption changes with price) in assessing acceptance of hypothetical HIV vaccines among sexual and gender minorities (SGMs). Two experiments used simulated purchase tasks (hypothetical scenarios measuring purchasing decisions). SGMs were recruited through Reddit and LGBTQ+ community organizations across the United States. In Experiment 1, participants were randomly assigned to nine instructional sets combining varying vaccine administration modes (oral, mucosal, or subcutaneo

How does monetary loss empathy modulate generosity in economic sharing behavior? An ERPs study.

Previous studies have shown that generosity is driven by empathy and that both generosity in economic sharing behavior and monetary loss empathy decay as the social distance increases. However, it is still unclear whether this decay in economic sharing generosity can be influenced by the decay in monetary loss empathy. In the current study, we carried out two experiments to investigate this issue to deepen our understanding of the relationship between monetary loss empathy and generosity in economic sharing behavior. Our results show that in the observation group (observers watch their friend,

A behavioral economic analysis of the effects of rimcazole on reinforcing effects of cocaine injection and food presentation in rats.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Rimcazole, a σ-receptor antagonist with affinity for the dopamine transporter (DAT), decreases rates of cocaine self-administration at doses lower than those that affect food-reinforced responding. As response rates are multiply determined, behavioral-economic analyses were used to provide measures of the reinforcing effectiveness of cocaine and food after rimcazole treatment. Further, effects of combinations of the DAT inhibitor, methylphenidate, and σ-receptor antagonists (BD1008, BD1063) were compared to those of rimcazole to assess mechanism of rimcazole effects.

Community-based behavior change promoting child health care: a response to socio-economic disparity.

BACKGROUND: Early initiation of breastfeeding after birth is a key behavioral health factor known to decrease neonatal mortality risks. Yet, few demographic studies examined how a community-based intervention impacts postpartum breastfeeding among the socio-economically deprived population in Sub-Saharan Africa. A post-intervention evaluation was conducted in 2011 to measure the effect of a UNICEF-led behavior change communication program promoting child health care in rural Niger. METHODS: A quantitative survey is based on a post hoc constitution of two groups of a study sample, exposed and

Daily assessments of behavioral economic indices and drinking among rural-residing adults with at-risk drinking.

In a secondary analysis among adults with at-risk drinking who live in rural areas (N = 75; 62.7% Female; 98.7% White), we examined the predictive ability of behavioral economic (BE) indices (demand, delay discounting, and proportion of alcohol-free activities) for next-day alcohol use via daily surveys across the range of alcohol use severity. These relations were tested using linear mixed-effects models, including evaluating the interaction of BE indices with alcohol use severity. In unadjusted analyses, proportion of alcohol-free activities (β [95% CI]: -0.022 [-0.038, -0.006]), demand inte

Long-term comparative trajectories of health, behavioral, and economic outcomes: From pre-diagnosis to survivorship.

PURPOSE: Although cancer survivorship involves interconnected changes in health, health behaviors, and economic well-being, few studies have comprehensively examined how these outcomes evolve before and after a cancer diagnosis within the same population over time. Using population-based longitudinal data, we characterized trajectories before and after incident cancer diagnosis and compared them with those of matched individuals without cancer. METHODS: Using 15 waves (1992-2022) of the Health and Retirement Study, we identified 5,423 incident cancer cases and matched them to up to four contr

Behavioral Economic Assessment of Contraceptive Use and Abortion Access Among College Cis Women in the U.S.

College students are at increased risk of sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies, complicated by changes in abortion access across the United States. The current study utilized a behavioral economic framework to examine how sex-related behavior, knowledge, and attitudes as well as access to abortion impacted valuation of condoms and an emergency contraceptive (i.e., morning after pill) among cis women college students (N = 109). Behavioral economic tasks included condom demand (ConPT) and condom delay discounting (ConDD) in the context of a one-night stand as well as a novel

Balancing choice and socioeconomic realities: analyzing behavioral and economic factors in social oocyte cryopreservation decisions.

PURPOSE: This research investigates the influence of personal income, the likelihood of pregnancy from cryopreserved oocytes, and the risk of infertility, on the decision-making process of women. The study employs the economic stated preference framework alongside the Theory of Planned Behavior in order to comprehend the process of decision-making. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The data had been collected from women between the ages of 18 and 65 via questionnaire employing conjoint analysis (CA). Through the utilization of this methodology, the factors influencing women's choices concerning oo

Behavioral Economic Incentives to Support HIV Care: Results From a Randomized Controlled Trial in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: This study tests behavioral economics incentives to improve adherence to antiretroviral treatment (ART), with 1 approach being low cost. SETTING: Three hundred twenty-nine adults at Mildmay Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, on ART for at least 2 years and showing adherence problems received the intervention for about 15 months until the study was interrupted by a nation-wide COVID-19 lockdown. METHODS: We randomized participants into 1 of 3 (1:1:1) groups: usual care ("control" group; n = 109) or 1 of 2 intervention groups where eligibility for nonmonetary prizes was based on showing

Behavioral Economic Strategies to Improve Enrollment Rates in Clinical Research: Embedded Recruitment Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: Nearly 1 in 3 clinical trials end prematurely due to underenrollment. Strategies to enhance recruitment are often implemented without scientific rigor to evaluate efficacy. Evidence-based, cost-effective behavioral economic strategies designed to influence decision-making may be useful to promote clinical trial enrollment. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated 2 behavioral economic strategies to improve enrollment and retention rates across 4 clinical trials: information provision (IP) and contingency management (CM; ie, lottery). IP targets descriptive and injunctive norms about partic

Behavioral economic analysis of the effects of N-substituted benztropine analogs on cocaine self-administration in rats.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Benztropine (BZT) analogs and other atypical dopamine uptake inhibitors selectively decrease cocaine self-administration at doses that do not affect responding maintained by other reinforcers. Those effects were further characterized in the current study using a behavioral economic assessment of how response requirement (price) affects reinforcers obtained (consumption) in rats. METHODS: Two groups of rats were trained to press levers with food (45-mg pellet) or cocaine (0.32 mg/kg/injection) reinforcement under fixed-ratio (FR) 5-response schedules. In selected sess

The effect of pregnancy intention on important maternal behaviors and satisfaction with care in a socially and economically at-risk population.

This study examined the association of pregnancy intention with maternal behaviors and the woman's perceived satisfaction with her prenatal and delivery care. Face-to-face interviews with 478 primarily Medicaid eligible women in Indianapolis, Indiana during their postpartum hospital stay were conducted to assess their degree of satisfaction with prenatal care and pregnancy intention, stratified into wanting to be pregnant now, later or never. Behaviors and characteristics influencing utilization of prenatal care were obtained from linked birth certificate data. A greater proportion of younger

Impact of layered behavioral, socio-economic and school-based interventions on selected behavioral and biomarker indicators among adolescent girls and young women in Uganda.

Globally, adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) continue to be at an elevated risk of HIV infection. We assessed the impact of layered behavioral, socio-economic and school-based interventions on selected behavioral and biomarker indicators among AGYW in Uganda. We used data from two serial cross-sectional surveys conducted in 14 (eight intervention and six comparison) districts in 2018 (n = 8,236) and 2023 (n = 5,449). Between 2019 and 2023, AGYW in the intervention districts received social and behavioral change communication plus either socio-economic support, vocational skills-based trai

Estimating the Economic Value of Supported Online Parent-Led Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Prevent Child Anxiety Problems: Economic Evaluation of the MYCATS Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Childhood anxiety disorders are common and lead to substantial negative long-term outcomes in various life domains. Although digital interventions for preventing childhood anxiety problems have been increasingly used in the recent decade, there is limited evidence documenting their cost-effectiveness (CE). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the CE of a parent-led online cognitive behavioral therapy with therapist support (OSI+TS) alongside usual school practice (USP), compared to USP alone for children aged 4-7 years at risk of anxiety disorders identified through universal s

Compensate at your own risk: heterogeneity in compliance with preventive behaviors through the lens of economic and social preferences.

Preventive behaviors are crucial for controlling the spread of infectious diseases. Until now, most of the literature on the understanding of the willingness to comply with preventive behaviors at the individual level has focused on either one of those behaviors or studied several behaviors but independently. However, preventive behaviors might not be independent of each other’s and the question of the relationship between these various behaviors deserves to be further investigated. The COVID-19 pandemic represents an interesting setting to study compliance with preventive behaviors when sever

The Role of Alcohol Expectancies in the Association Between Behavioral Economic Alcohol Demand, Relative Reinforcement, and Alcohol Problems.

Alcohol consumption and related problems are common among college students. Prior research links behavioral economic (BE) constructs of alcohol demand and relative reinforcement (RR), and alcohol expectancies, with alcohol consumption/problems. However, research has yet to examine the associations between BE, expectancy theory, and alcohol use outcomes. In this study, college students (n = 287) completed a single online survey assessing demand, RR, alcohol expectancies, and alcohol use/problems. We examined the cross-sectional indirect association of expectancies and drinking on the relationsh

Compliance in the public versus the private realm: Economic preferences, institutional trust and COVID-19 health behaviors.

To what extent do economic preferences and institutional trust predict compliance with physical distancing rules during the COVID-19 pandemic? We reexamine this question by introducing the theoretical and empirical distinction between individual health behaviors in the public and in the private domain (e.g., keeping a distance from strangers vs. abstaining from private gatherings with friends). Using structural equation modeling to analyze survey data from Germany's second wave of the pandemic (N = 3350), we reveal the following major differences between compliance in both domains: Social pref

Using simple economic games to assess social orienting and prosocial behavior in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

Deficits in socio-emotional reciprocity, in prosocial behavior and in developing social relationships are diagnostic criteria of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), usually assessed by self-report or observation. Simple social experiments developed by behavioral economists allow for quantification of ASD-related social behavior. In this study, we used such experiments to compare social-economic decision-making between ASD adolescents and neurotypical controls. Precisely, we analyzed social orienting and prosocial behavior in 17 adolescents with ASD (Asperger syndrome) and 24 matched neurotypical a
