Common medial elbow injuries in the adolescent athlete.

Recently there has been increased year-round sports participation among children and adolescents with limited to no rest periods. This has led to increases in pediatric repetitive stress injuries, once considered a rarity. Whether in the throwing athlete or in the athlete that experiences repetitive axial loading; increased medial tension and overload syndromes can lead to stress reactions and fractures. This occurs in the developing athlete due to the bone being weaker than the surrounding tendons and ligaments. The medial elbow is a high stress area and is susceptible to many conditions incl

Nerve injuries about the elbow in the athlete.

The athlete's elbow is a remarkable example of motion, strength, and durability. The stress placed on the elbow during sport, including the throwing motion, may lead to soft-tissue ligamentous and nerve injury. The thrower's elbow illustrates one example of possible nerve injury about the elbow in sport, related to chronic repetitive tensile and compressive stresses to the ulnar nerve associated with elbow flexion and valgus position. Besides the throwing athlete, nerve injury from high-energy direct-impact forces may also damage nerves around the elbow in contact sports. Detailed history and

[Sport injuries and overuse damage of the elbow].

Sports injuries of the elbow joint can be acute or can arise due to chronic overuse. Such overstress syndromes are common in overhead, throwing and racket sports activities. The present article introduces diagnostic algorithms developed from knowledge gained through motion analysis, clinical examination and further imaging. The diagnosis of the overtaxing syndromes mainly depends on these findings. Basically most of the disorders in the elbow joint can be treated conservatively. If this is not the case or if the conservative treatment does not succeed, arthroscopic techniques, ligament reconst

Overhead throwing injuries of the shoulder and elbow.

Injuries to the shoulder and elbow are common in athletes involved in sporting activities that require overhead motion of the arm. An understanding of the forces involved in the throwing motion, the anatomic structures most at risk, and the magnetic resonance imaging appearances of the most common associated injuries can help to improve diagnostic accuracy when interpreting imaging studies in these patients.

Prevention of elbow injuries in youth baseball pitchers.

There is concern among sports medicine practitioners that the number of youth baseball pitchers with elbow injuries appears to be increasing. Research points to overuse as the principle risk factor. The risk of elbow pain in youth pitchers is correlated with the number of pitches thrown in a game and in a season. Adolescents who competitively pitch more than 85 pitches per game, more than 8 months out of a year, or with arm fatigue are several times more likely to require elbow surgery. Poor pitching mechanics also appear to contribute to injury risk. Existing research does not show a signific…

Shoulder and elbow injuries in the adolescent athlete.

The shoulder and elbow represent two of the most commonly injured joints in the adolescent population. Specific injuries vary by sport and can involve various structures, depending on the mechanism of injury. Unlike the adult shoulder, the immature skeletal structure of the adolescent athlete can lead to several unique injuries. By understanding the special demands placed on the immature shoulder, the sports physician can more effectively treat the resultant injury. This article reviews the diagnosis and management of unique injuries to the shoulder and elbow in the adolescent athlete.

Functional outcomes of elbow injuries managed according to the Wrightington classification of elbow fracture-dislocations.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to review the functional outcomes of patients managed by the application of the Wrightington elbow fracture-dislocation classification system and its corresponding management algorithms. METHODS: This is a retrospective consecutive case series of patients over the age of 16 with an elbow fracture-dislocation managed according to the Wrightington classification. The primary outcome was the Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) at the last follow-up. Range of movement (ROM) and complications were collected as a secondary outcome. RESULTS: Sixty patients qualified for

Treatment of complex elbow injuries with a postoperative custom-made progressive stretching static elbow splint.

BACKGROUND: Complex elbow injuries consist of fractures of one or several of the bony stabilizers of the elbow, including the radial head, proximal ulna, coronoid process, collateral ligaments, and capsular complex. These injuries, if not properly treated, were reported to have a poor prognosis with recurrent instability, stiffness, posttraumatic arthrosis, and pain. This study was conducted to review clinical outcomes after fracture stabilization and ligament repair with a postoperative custom-made progressive stretching (CMPS) elbow splint in the treatment of complex elbow injuries. METHODS…

The radiological findings in complex elbow fracture-dislocation injuries.

Elbow fracture-dislocation is a complex injury which can lead to significant bony and soft tissue damage. Surgical intervention is guided towards restoring joint stability, allowing early mobilization and preventing long-term joint stiffness. The most common types are posterolateral, posteromedial, Monteggia type (and variants), and anterior trans-olecranon fracture-dislocations. Posterolateral fracture-dislocation is characterized by a radial head fracture (± anterolateral coronoid fracture) and typically capsuloligamentous disruption (lateral collateral ligaments injury is the most common).

Shoulder and Elbow Injuries in the Adolescent Throwing Athlete.

Shoulder and elbow injuries in the adolescent population can be generally divided into skeletally immature and skeletally mature. Skeletally immature injuries refer to damage to the open growth plate (physis) in the young athlete, which have distinct differences in long-term risks if not managed correctly due to the potential for growth disturbance. Skeletally mature injuries occur in athletes with closed growth plates and are less likely to limit growth potential. It is important to recognize these different types of injuries, as well as the patients most at risk for each type because treatme…

Injuries and Conditions Affecting the Elbow Flexor/Pronator Tendons.

Common flexor-pronator tendon injuries and medial epicondylitis can be successfully treated nonoperatively in most cases. Operative treatment is reserved for patients with continued symptoms despite adequate nonoperative treatment or in high-level athletes with complete rupture of the common flexor-pronator tendon. The physical examination and workup of patients with flexor-pronator tendon injuries should focus on related or concomitant pathologies of the medial elbow. The gold standard for surgical treatment of flexor-pronator tendon ruptures or medial epicondylitis includes tendon debridemen

Sideswipe injuries around the elbow: Management and functional evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Sideswipe injuries constitute a subgroup of complex elbow trauma. Almost all of these are high energy open injuries. There is no fixed protocol that is followed in the earlier studies. The injury pattern is grotesque and ill managed with poor functional outcome. We report the functional outcome in our series of patients who sustained sideswipe injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty four patients presenting with sideswipe injuries around the elbow were managed and functional results evaluated. The patients were followed for 15-94 months (mean 74 months). 32 of these were males a

Elbow injuries in the young athlete--an orthopedic perspective.

Elbow injuries in young athletes are increasing with these athletes specializing in a single sport at an early age and participating in their chosen sport at a high level year-round. The majority of these injuries occur from valgus loading of the elbow, either repetitively causing an overuse injury or more acutely resulting in a fracture or dislocation. Capitellar osteochondritis dissecans, medial epicondyle injuries and ulnar collateral ligament injuries are three of the most common elbow injuries occurring in young athletes.

Elbow injuries in throwing athletes: a current concepts review.

Repetitive overhead throwing imparts high valgus and extension loads to the athlete's elbow, often leading to either acute or chronic injury or progressive structural change. Tensile force is applied to the medial stabilizing structures with compression on the lateral compartment and shear stress posteriorly. Common injuries encountered in the throwing elbow include ulnar collateral ligament tears, ulnar neuritis, flexor-pronator muscle strain or tendinitis, medial epicondyle apophysitis or avulsion, valgus extension overload syndrome with olecranon osteophytes, olecranon stress fractures, ost
