Pulsed low-energy stimulation initiates electric turbulence in cardiac tissue.

Interruptions in nonlinear wave propagation, commonly referred to as wave breaks, are typical of many complex excitable systems. In the heart they lead to lethal rhythm disorders, the so-called arrhythmias, which are one of the main causes of sudden death in the industrialized world. Progress in the treatment and therapy of cardiac arrhythmias requires a detailed understanding of the triggers and dynamics of these wave breaks. In particular, two very important questions are: 1) What determines the potential of a wave break to initiate re-entry? and 2) How do these breaks evolve such that the s

Negative motor networks: Electric cortical stimulation and diffusion tensor imaging.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the networks of Negative motor areas (NMAs) using electric cortical stimulation and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). METHODS: Twelve patients with intractable focal epilepsy, in which NMAs were identified by electrical cortical stimulation, were enrolled in this study. Electric stimulation at 50Hz was applied to the electrodes during motor tasks to identify the NMAs. DTI was used to identify the subcortical fibers originating from the NMAs found by electrical stimulation. RESULTS: NMAs were found in lateral frontal areas (premotor area (PM) and precentral…

Electric-Acoustic Stimulation After Reimplantation: Hearing Preservation and Speech Perception.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing preservation after cochlear implantation allows for fitting of acoustic and cochlear implant technologies in the same ear, known as Electric-Acoustic Stimulation (EAS). Cochlear implant recipients with EAS who experience an internal device failure face the additional risk of residual hearing loss during reimplantation. This report reviews the case of an EAS recipient with long-term hearing preservation and significant benefit who experienced a device failure and underwent cochlear reimplantation. PATIENT: Case study who presented with an internal device failure after nearly

Can transcranial electric stimulation with multiple electrodes reach deep targets?

To reach a deep target in the brain with transcranial electric stimulation (TES), currents have to pass also through the cortical surface. Thus, it is generally thought that TES cannot achieve focal deep brain stimulation. Recent efforts with interfering waveforms and pulsed stimulation have argued that one can achieve deeper or more intense stimulation in the brain. Here we argue that conventional transcranial stimulation with multiple current sources is just as effective as these new approaches. The conventional multi-electrode approach can be numerically optimized to maximize intensity or f…

Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) for cancer pain in adults.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related pain is complex and multi-dimensional but the mainstay of cancer pain management has predominately used a biomedical approach. There is a need for non-pharmacological and innovative approaches. Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation (TENS) may have a role for a significant number of patients but the effectiveness of TENS is currently unknown. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review was to determine the effectiveness of TENS for cancer-related pain in adults. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsychINFO, AMED and PED

[Observation on acupoint electric potential in pilots under vestibular stimulation].

To study the possibility of using acupoint electric potential as an index for evaluation of pilot's reaction to vestibular stimulation, electric potential was measured on both sides of left and right Neiguan points and Zusanli points in 80 pilots. Rotation chair was used as the method of stimulation. The results showed that changes of acupoint electric potentials were not significant (P >0.05) during 5 min uniform rotation. While the changes under head motion stimulation were significant (P<0.05 or 0.01) as compared with the pretest values. Relationship between symptoms and the corresponding a

Shocking therapy: uses of transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation in dermatology.

The use of transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation is new to dermatologists but has a long history. A list of published applications includes use in therapy for postherpetic neuralgia, increased peripheral circulation, itching, varicose ulcers, ischemic ulcers, diabetic neuropathy, leprous neuritis, would healing, increased survival of skin flaps, Raynaud's phenomenon, scleroderma, esophageal dysmotility, and glossodynia.

Electric muscle stimulation for pressure sore prevention: tissue shape variation.

This study measured changes in tissue shape and deformation at the seating interface produced by electric muscle stimulation (EMS) of the gluteus maximus. The purpose of the study was to investigate the application of EMS for pressure sore prevention. Limitations of pressure measurements for analysis of load distribution are discussed and a rationale developed for using tissue shape and deformation to further characterize the seating interface. Ultrasonic imaging of the seating interface is described under three conditions: buttocks suspended, external load applied with no EMS, and external lo

Temporary Pacing for Electric Cardiac Stimulation and Neuromodulatory Cardiovascular Therapy.

The widespread prevalence and significant consequences of cardiac arrhythmias have been addressed by adopting cardiac stimulation and neuromodulation implantable devices. The oldest, most commonly employed, and most well-known technology is the permanent transvenous cardiac pacemaker. However, in select emergent clinical scenarios and transient pathologies, temporary pacing is preferred. More recently, neuromodulatory vagal nerve stimulation has emerged to address neurologic, psychiatric, and nociceptive pathologies, generating significant clinical and scientific interest in the invention of t

Transcranial electric stimulation modulates firing rate at clinically relevant intensities.

BACKGROUND: Notwithstanding advances with low-intensity transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), there remain questions about the efficacy of clinically realistic electric fields on neuronal function. OBJECTIVE: To measure electric fields magnitude and their effects on neuronal firing rate of hippocampal neurons in freely moving rats, and to establish calibrated computational models of current flow. METHODS: Current flow models were calibrated on electric field measures in the motor cortex (n = 2 anesthetized rats) and hippocampus. A Neuropixels 2.0 probe with 384 channels was used in an i
