Orbitofrontal Epilepsies: Intracranial Electroencephalography and Surgical Aspects.

Orbitofrontal epilepsies (OFE) produce variable clinical semiologies and nonspecific electrographic patterns thereby being challenging to localize. Furthermore, systematic studies of the surgical management and outcomes in OFE are sparse. The authors review the current literature and discuss the intracranial electroencephalography, microsurgical techniques, and surgical outcomes of patients in the context of a 20-year surgical experience in treating 24 patients with OFE. The authors distinguish between purely orbitofrontal resections (OF-focal, n = 10) and those in whom additional brain region…

Intraoperative pediatric electroencephalography monitoring: an updated review.

Intraoperative electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring under pediatric anesthesia has begun to attract increasing interest, driven by the availability of pediatric-specific EEG monitors and the realization that traditional dosing methods based on patient movement or changes in hemodynamic response often lead to imprecise dosing, especially in younger infants who may experience adverse events (e.g., hypotension) due to excess anesthesia. EEG directly measures the effects of anesthetics on the brain, which is the target end-organ responsible for inducing loss of consciousness. Over the past ten …

Heart Rate Variability During Short-Term Electroencephalography.

INTRODUCTION: Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of the function of the brainstem nuclei that modulate heart rhythm through the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. HRV is reduced in many health conditions. It is a predictor of increased mortality in patients who have had myocardial infarction, and of sudden death in persons with epilepsy.   Methods: We measured HRV in the single-channel electrocardiogram (ECG) of 103 patients undergoing a short electroencephalogram (EEG) of 20 to 90 minutes' duration, whose EEG results were normal. RESULTS: We found that despite the normal

Relational local electroencephalography representations for sleep scoring.

Computational sleep scoring from multimodal neurophysiological time-series (polysomnography PSG) has achieved impressive clinical success. Models that use only a single electroencephalographic (EEG) channel from PSG have not yet received the same clinical recognition, since they lack Rapid Eye Movement (REM) scoring quality. The question whether this lack can be remedied at all remains an important one. We conjecture that predominant Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models do not adequately represent distant REM EEG segments (termed epochs), since LSTMs compress these to a fixed-size vector from

Timing of periventricular leukomalacia using neonatal electroencephalography.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the timing of brain damage involved in the onset of periventricular leukomalacia in the perinatal period we recorded and analyzed neonatal electroencephalograms (EEGs). METHODS: Twenty-four preterm birth infants proved by real time ultrasonic examination or MRI to be suffering from periventricular leukomalacia underwent serial electroencephalography from soon after birth. RESULTS: Thirteen (54%) demonstrated intrauterine injury patterns, 2 infants (8%) showed postnatal injury, and in the remaining 9 cases (38%) the time of injury could not be determined by electroencep…

Quantitative Analysis of Electroencephalography in Hypnosis: A Neurophysiological Approach.

Hypnosis is a unique state of consciousness marked by heightened response to suggestions, focused attention, and altered cognitive control. This article explores the neural connections involved in hypnosis through electroencephalography (EEG) studies, examining brain changes during hypnosis and their relationship to hypnotic depth and susceptibility. Theta waves, linked to hypnotic depth, are stronger in highly hypnotizable individuals, while gamma waves are associated with focus, suggestion acceptance, and emotional responses. Hypnosis also induces frequency-dependent reorganization of large-…

Quantitative electroencephalography in the diagnosis of dementia with Lewy bodies.

The spectral analysis of the resting-state eyes-closed electroencephalographic (rsEEG) activity typically shows abnormal delta (< 4 Hz), theta (4-7 Hz), and alpha (8-12 Hz) power in older patients with cognitive deficits due to progressive neurodegenerative diseases. Interestingly, abnormally prominent posterior rsEEG power < 8 Hz with periodic fluctuations in the pre-alpha/theta range has been considered a supportive biomarker for diagnosing patients with prodromal or manifest dementia due to Lewy bodies (DLB) in international guidelines. Here, a panel of experts shortly reviews the concepts

An Electrophysiological/Electrochemical Microelectrode for Electroencephalography and Adrenaline Sensing.

Wearable and implantable microelectrodes are widely used to investigate brain function and treat neurological disorders. Here, we present a dual-function electrophysiological and electrochemical (EC) microelectrode composed of Cu-doped graphene nanosheets. The graphene nanosheets were vertically grown via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and possess excellent electrical properties while exhibiting enhanced electrochemical (EC) activity due to the in situ-doped Cu. An electroencephalography (EEG) headband for humans, adrenaline (Adr) measurement device, and indwelling needle cores were successfu…

Quantitative Electroencephalography Findings in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus.

Objective. Diabetes mellitus (DM) causes structural central nervous system (CNS) impairment, and this situation can be detected by quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) findings before cognitive impairment is clinically observed. The main aim of this study is to uncover the effect of DM on brain function. Since QEEG reflects the CNS functioning, particularly in cognitive aspects, we expected electrophysiological clues to be found for prevention and follow-up in DM-related cognitive decline. Since a majority of the psychiatric population have cognitive dysfunction, we have given particular…

Electroencephalography profiles as a biomarker of wellbeing: A twin study.

Alterations to electroencephalography (EEG) power have been reported for psychiatric conditions such as depression and anxiety, but not for mental wellbeing in a healthy population. This study examined the resting EEG profiles associated with mental wellbeing, and how genetics and environment contribute to these associations using twin modelling. Mental wellbeing was assessed using the COMPAS-W Wellbeing Scale which measures both subjective and psychological wellbeing. In 422 healthy adult monozygotic and dizygotic twins aged 18-61 years, we examined the association between mental wellbeing an…

An Electroencephalography Connectomic Profile of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to identify brain regions whose frequency-specific, orthogonalized resting-state EEG power envelope connectivity differs between combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and healthy combat-exposed veterans, and to determine the behavioral correlates of connectomic differences. METHODS: The authors first conducted a connectivity method validation study in healthy control subjects (N=36). They then conducted a two-site case-control study of veterans with and without PTSD who were deployed to Iraq and/or Afghanistan. Healthy individuals (N=95) and t

Electroencephalography in the Diagnosis of Genetic Generalized Epilepsy Syndromes.

Genetic generalized epilepsy (GGE) consists of several syndromes diagnosed and classified on the basis of clinical features and electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities. The main EEG feature of GGE is bilateral, synchronous, symmetric, and generalized spike-wave complex. Other classic EEG abnormalities are polyspikes, epileptiform K-complexes and sleep spindles, polyspike-wave discharges, occipital intermittent rhythmic delta activity, eye-closure sensitivity, fixation-off sensitivity, and photoparoxysmal response. However, admixed with typical changes, atypical epileptiform discharges are
