Assorted Skin Procedures: Foreign Body Removal, Cryotherapy, Electrosurgery, and Treatment of Keloids.

Clinicians in the primary care setting will encounter various different skin conditions requiring procedural intervention. There are many different procedural approaches to treatment. Knowing which modalities are available and best suited to handle a particular skin lesion allows for flexibility for patient and clinician. Although some treatment modalities may be used more than others, it is helpful to be at least familiar with basic in office skin procedures such as removal of foreign bodies, cryotherapy, electrosurgery, and treatment of keloids, as these procedures are helpful in addressing …

Vaginal Hysterectomy by Electrosurgery for Benign Indications Associated with Previous Cesarean Section.

Background: Vaginal hysterectomies have been associated with difficulties in patients who have had cesarean sections prior to such hysterectomies. However, the Purohit technique may obviate the problems and make it easier to perform these operations. Objectives: This research tested an approach designed to facilitate vaginal hysterectomy in patients with previous cesarean sections in the absence of fixed adhesions of uterine corpi to previous anterior abdominal scarring. Design/Method: An observational study was conducted in a private general hospital between February 2010 and June 2012. All c

Health technology assessment through the six sigma approach in abdominoplasty: Scalpel vs electrosurgery.

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure conducted to reduce excess abdominal skin and fat and improve body contouring. Despite being commonly performed, it is associated with a risk of complications such as infection, seroma, haematoma and wound dehiscence. To reduce the incidence of complications, different methods are used to create the abdominal flap, i.e., incision with a scalpel or electrosurgery. In this study, health technology assessment (HTA) using the Six Sigma methodology was conducted to compare these incision techniques in patients undergoing abdominoplasty. Two consecutively enrol…

Monopolar Electrosurgery-Induced Axillary Burns From Aluminum-Containing Antiperspirant Deodorant Use During Blepharoplasty.

Electrosurgery is a widely utilized and generally safe surgical technique; however, rare cases of iatrogenic skin burns can occur. Here, the authors present a 60-year-old woman with bilateral vision-impairing dermatochalasis and xanthelasma who sustained bilateral axillary burns following monopolar electrosurgery during a blepharoplasty. The burns fully healed after 3 months with no medical intervention. No intraoperative or external risk factors for electrosurgery burns were identified other than the patient's preoperative application of an aluminum-containing antiperspirant deodorant. This c…

The correction of conjunctivochalasis using high-frequency radiowave electrosurgery improves dry eye disease.

We aimed to determine the clinical impact of conjunctivochalasis (CCh) and its correction using high-frequency radiowave electrosurgery (HFR-ES), for signs and symptoms of dry eye disease (DED). Forty patients diagnosed with symptomatic CCh were prospectively enrolled. As a result, patients with CCh had moderate to severe DED and most of them exhibited meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Corneo-conjunctival fluorescein staining score (CFS) and all lid-parallel-conjunctival-folds scores (LIPCOFs) were positively correlated. Nasal LIPCOF significantly correlated with symptoms and tear volume. Cen…

Treatment of gingival fibromas using CO2 laser and electrosurgery in a patient with tuberous sclerosis.

A 10-year-old boy with a history of tuberous sclerosis was sent for evaluation of numerous papules on his lower gum area. The parent was concerned that the lesions were interfering with oral hygiene. A diagnosis of oral fibromas was made and treatment options of gingivectomy or electrosurgery combined with carbon dioxide laser were described to the patient and his parent. Therapy with electrocautery and a pulsed carbon dioxide laser was decided on and utilized. We describe for the first time the combination of electrosurgery and carbon dioxide laser as a treatment method for oral fibromas. A s…

Autonomous Closed-Loop Control for Robotic Soft Tissue Electrosurgery Using RGB-D Image Guidance.

Oral cavity cancer, a common head and neck cancer, is typically treated through precise tumor excision via electrosurgery. Autonomous robotic electrosurgery has demonstrated the potential to achieve more accurate and consistent resection margins compared to manual methods, thereby improving surgical outcomes. However, current autonomous systems face challenges in tracking tissue deformation during electrosurgical cutting due to unpredictable and complex soft tissue dynamics. Failure to monitor and adapt to tissue deformation can significantly compromise resection precision. This paper presents…

Carbon Dioxide Laser Transconjunctival Lower Blepharoplasty: An Objective and Quantitative Comparison to Monopolar Electrosurgery.

BACKGROUND: The ability to simultaneously cut and perform hemostasis with low lateral thermal injury makes carbon dioxide laser a useful tool in blepharoplasty. Monopolar electrosurgery is another commonly used cutting tool that improves the quality of hemostasis and cutting speed. This study aimed to objectively and quantitatively assess the intraoperative and postoperative outcomes of transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty using either a carbon dioxide laser or monopolar electrosurgery. METHODS: Between August of 2018 and March of 2021, 78 patients who underwent transconjunctival lower blep…

Arthroscopic shoulder stabilization Differential treatment strategy with Suretac, Fastak, holmium: YAG laser and electrosurgery.

The goal for arthroscopic stabilization of anterior glenohumeral instability is to achieve an outcome equivalent to or better than open procedures. A number of arthroscopic procedures have been advocated to reestablish continuity of the inferior glenohumeral ligament complex (IGHLC) with the glenoid. Implantable suture anchors were developed to avoid the problems associated with arthroscopic staple capsulorrhaphy like iatrogenic injury of the glenoid or humeral surface, loosening and migration of the staple. Several transosseous techniques include the need for an accessory posterior incision,
