Fungal colonisation of formaldehyde-embalmed fetal and adult cadavers: Species identification and occupational health implications.

BACKGROUND: While cadaveric dissection is a cornerstone of medical education, standard formaldehyde-based preservation often fails to ensure microbial sterility. Fungal colonisation of preserved specimen's compromises tissue integrity and poses occupational health risks, including respiratory issues, for students and laboratory staff. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to isolate, identify, and characterize fungal species from formaldehyde-preserved adult and fetal cadavers to inform and strengthen disinfection strategies in anatomy laboratories. METHODS: Sixty swab samples were collected from the

Are spinal cord and medulla samples from embalmed donors suitable for histological examination? A pilot study.

A general belief exists that tissue from anatomical donors, especially from the central nervous system (CNS), may not be suitable for histological investigation. This is based on the idea that fixation routinely used in embalming whilst optimal for enabling dissection, insufficiently preserves tissue architecture at the cellular level. However, anatomical donors represent a precious resource for microscopical investigation, provided that preservation is sufficient to enable recognition of structures at the histological level. This could considerably extend the biomedical knowledge currently ga…

THE CONSTRAINING EFFECT OF THE LATERAL FEMORAL INTERMUSCULAR SEPTUM ON PASSIVE HIP ADDUCTION IN UN-EMBALMED CADAVERS.

BACKGROUND: Due to the lack of verifiable iliotibial band elongation in response to stretching, the anatomical, biomechanical, and physiological responses to treatment of iliotibial band syndrome remain unclear. The lateral intermuscular septum, consisting of multiple myofibroblasts, firmly anchors the iliotibial band to the femur. PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this in-situ study was to examine the constraining effect of the lateral intermuscular septum on available passive hip adduction range of motion in un-embalmed cadavers. It was hypothesized that an iliotibial band-septum-compl

Impact of shoulder internal rotation on ulnar nerve excursion and strain in embalmed cadavers. A pilot study.

DESIGN: Laboratory study, repeated-measures design. OBJECTIVE: To determine if the substitution of shoulder internal rotation for external rotation during the upper limb neurodynamic test (ULNT3) evokes a comparable ulnar nerve excursion and strain in embalmed cadavers. Shoulder external rotation is a primary movement component of the ULNT3. It has been suggested that shoulder internal rotation may provide a similar load to the nervous system. There are no data to either support or negate this claim. METHODS: Excursion and strain were measured in the ulnar nerve of six embalmed cadavers duri

Building ultrasound-guided procedure skills in regional anesthesiology: simulation training with a formalin-embalmed cadaver model.

BACKGROUND: The use of ultrasound guidance in regional anesthesiology procedures has become the standard of care. Using ultrasound to guide a needle is a highly technical skill that requires deliberate training and repetitive hands-on practice to master. Cost effective and anatomically realistic simulation training opportunities are needed to allow medical trainees to develop these skills prior to performing procedures on patients. Simulation training with formalin-embalmed cadavers, which are the most widely available type of body donor, may provide appropriate and effective needle-guidance t

Comparison of modified Thiel embalming and ethanol-glycerin fixation in an anatomy environment: Potentials and limitations of two complementary techniques.

Thiel-fixed specimens have outstandingly lifelike visual and haptic properties. However, the original Thiel method is expensive and requires an elaborate setup. It is therefore of principal interest to modify the Thiel method in order to make it available to a broader user group. A modified Thiel embalming method will be described in detail and compared to ethanol-glycerin fixation with the help of illustrative examples. The visual properties, haptic properties, the usability for performing histological investigations, costs and potential health aspects will be considered. Tissues fixed with t…

Use of Thiel-embalmed cadavers in urology training and their ability to retain real-life anatomy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Thiel-embalmed cadavers (TeCs) have been proposed as an alternative and probably safer method of surgical training, compared to formalin-embalmed cadavers. We aimed to perform a systematic review on the use of TeCs in urology training and their ability to represent real-life anatomy. METHODS: PubMed, SCOPUS and Cochrane databases were searched for articles with purpose to explore the use of TeCs in urology training, without date restrictions, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. From each paper, we evaluated the ty

Experimental investigations of the human oesophagus: anisotropic properties of the embalmed mucosa-submucosa layer under large deformation.

Mechanical characterisation of the layer-specific, viscoelastic properties of the human oesophagus is crucial in furthering the development of devices emerging in the field, such as robotic endoscopic biopsy devices, as well as in enhancing the realism, and therefore effectiveness, of surgical simulations. In this study, the viscoelastic and stress-softening behaviour of the passive human oesophagus was investigated through ex vivo cyclic mechanical tests. Due to restrictions placed on the laboratory as a result of COVID-19, only oesophagi from cadavers fixed in formalin were allowed for testi

Surgical training in extraperitoneal laparoscopic para‑aortic lymphadenectomy for the treatment of gynecological cancer using a Thiel‑embalmed cadaver.

The extraperitoneal laparoscopic approach (ELPAN) for para-aortic lymphadenectomy provides excellent visibility of the left side of the aorta, thus facilitating surgery in the retroperitoneal space. This technique is highly complex compared with the transperitoneal approach. In particular, advanced techniques are required to develop an appropriate surgical field in the narrow retroperitoneal space; therefore, surgeons need to undergo a significant amount of training to become competent. A variety of tools are available for surgical training but are limited by their ability to reproduce complex

Round window and promontory movements during bone conduction with different middle ear conditions in Thiel embalmed specimens.

BACKGROUND: Thiel conservation is mainly based on a watery solution of salts. We have shown that bone conduction (BC) evokes motion in normal middle ears of Thiel embalmed specimens that is comparable to the motion for other cadaveric models. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: We evaluated whether promontory and round window (RW) motion identifies differences in BC transmission for different middle ear conditions. METHODS: We investigated the conditions of mobile ossicle chain, cement-fixed stapes and stapedectomy in seven ears. A retroauricular bone anchored hearing system provided BC stimulation. The motion

Kinematic and Kinetic Comparison of Fresh Frozen and Thiel-Embalmed Human Feet for Suitability for Biomechanical Educational and Research Settings.

BACKGROUND: In vitro biomechanical testing of the human foot often involves the use of fresh frozen cadaveric specimens to investigate interventions that would be detrimental to human subjects. The Thiel method is an alternative embalming technique that maintains soft-tissue consistency similar to that of living tissue. However, its suitability for biomechanical testing is unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine whether Thiel-embalmed foot specimens exhibit kinematic and kinetic biomechanical properties similar to those of fresh frozen specimens. METHODS: An observational study …
