Syrup of ipecacuanha as an emetic in adults.

The emetic actions of syrup of ipecacuanha have been evaluated in 105 adult patients presenting at the emergency department of the Royal Perth Hospital with a diagnosis of accidental or intentional poisoning. The australian Pharmaceutical Formulary (APF) and the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) formulations of the syrup were compared and gave similar overall emetic responses of 88% and 89% respectively at a dose level of 15 ml. A 30 ml dose regimen of the APF formulation gave a slightly but not significantly increased overall emetic response of 96%. There were no differences between the three

The emetic and anti-emetic effects of the capsaicin analogue resiniferatoxin in Suncus murinus, the house musk shrew.

1. In SUNCUS: murinus the ultrapotent capsaicin analogue resiniferatoxin (RTX) induced an emetic response in the dose range 1 - 1000 microg kg(-1), s.c. The latency was inversely related to dose and ranged from 41.2+/-4.4 min. (1 microg kg(-1), s.c.) to 2.7+/-0.6 min. (1000 microg kg(-1), s.c.). 2. The emetic response to RTX (10 or 100 microg kg(-1), s.c.) was blocked or markedly reduced by pre-treatment with RTX (100 microg kg(-1), s.c.), 8-OH-DPAT (100 microg kg(-1), s.c.), morphine (2 mg kg(-1), s.c.), neonatal capsaicin (100 mg kg(-1), s.c.) and the NK(1) receptor antagonist CP-99,994 (10

A comparison of commonly used anti-emetics for the prevention of emetic sequelae after a major gynaecological surgery.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving one hundred ASA I-II patients undergoing major gynaecological surgery. OBJECTIVE: To study anti-emetic efficacy of intravenous (IV) ondansetron (4 mg), droperidol (2.5 mg), metoclopramide (10 mg), and placebo. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 100ASA physical status I-II undergoing major gynaecological surgery were randomized to receive intravenously (IV), one of the four test drugs 10 minutes before the end of anaesthesia. The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting following a standard anaesthetic technique

Comparison of droperidol, haloperidol and prochlorperazine as postoperative anti-emetics.

The results of this study demonstrate that prochlorperazine, haloperidol and droperidol are all effective post-operative anti-emetic compounds when compared to saline but vary in onset of activity and duration of action. Haloperidol has the shortest onset of action, being effective within 30 minutes of intravenous administration. Prochlorperazine has an intermediate onset of action and droperidol is the slowest of the three compounds but the only one to provide significant anti-emesis 4-24 hours following administration. Our data suggest that a combination of haloperidol and droperidol may be
