Emotion regulation strategy correlates with discrete state emotion in major depression.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Research has shown that state emotion can affect emotion regulation strategies in healthy samples. Emotion regulation plays an important role in depression. We hypothesized that for depressed individuals, experiencing anxiety or anger affects emotion regulation strategy use differently than experiencing sadness. DESIGN AND METHODS: Individuals diagnosed with chronic or recurrent depression (N = 386) responded to vignettes of hypothetical stressors and reported their state emotions and emotion regulation strategies in a thought-listing procedure. We modeled the effec

The temporal deployment of emotion regulation strategies during negative emotional episodes.

Time is given a central place in theoretical models of emotion regulation (Gross, 1998, 2015), but key questions regarding the role of time remain unanswered. We investigated 2 such unanswered questions. First, we explored when different emotion regulation strategies were used within the course of an emotional episode in daily life. Second, we investigated the association between the temporal deployment of strategies and negative emotional experience. We conducted a daily diary study in which participants (N = 74) drew an intensity profile depicting the temporal unfolding of their negative emo

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia, emotion, and emotion regulation during social interaction.

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) figures prominently in emotional responding, but its exact role remains unclear. The present study tests two hypotheses: (1) Between-person differences in resting RSA are related to emotional reactivity, and (2) within-person changes in RSA are related to regulatory efforts. Pairs of women watched an upsetting film and discussed it. One woman in each of the experimental dyads was asked to either suppress or to reappraise during the conversation. Their partners and both members of the control dyads conversed naturally. Between-person differences in resting RSA

Relationship between hope, optimism, emotional regulation, and pain in fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain disorder that is marked by psychological distress. While previous research has predominantly focused on negative outcomes such as anxiety and depression, this study investigates the role of positive psychological constructs-hope, optimism, and emotional regulation-in relation to pain perception among individuals with FM. OBJECTIVES: The study aims to find the relationship between hope, optimism, emotional regulation, and pain in patients with fibromyalgia. METHODS: A total of 270 patients with FM were included in the study. The present study us…

Childhood trauma exposure disrupts the automatic regulation of emotional processing.

Early-life trauma is one of the strongest risk factors for later emotional psychopathology. Although research in adults highlights that childhood trauma predicts deficits in emotion regulation that persist decades later, it is unknown whether neural and behavioral changes that may precipitate illness are evident during formative, developmental years. This study examined whether automatic regulation of emotional conflict is perturbed in a high-risk urban sample of trauma-exposed children and adolescents. A total of 14 trauma-exposed and 16 age-, sex-, and IQ-matched comparison youth underwent f

Breaking the links in intergenerational violence: an emotional regulation perspective.

The saying "violence begets violence" is an apt descriptor of the cycle of family violence, as children who witness parental violence are at high risk for repeating family violence in their own adult intimate relationships. Neuroscience research suggests that emotional regulation may be an important link in the heritability of family violence, and promotes awareness of the importance of internalizing as well as externalizing responses to stress, neglect, and abuse. This study argues for a trauma-informed approach to identifying children and parents whose symptoms of emotional dysregulation may…

The Role of Emotion Regulation in Clinical Interventions.

Emotion regulation is a multifaceted process essential to mental health. This review synthesizes established theoretical models within an integrative framework of emotion regulation that links individual regulatory abilities with the dynamic processes through which emotions are modulated. It outlines how these abilities develop through the interplay of biological predispositions and environmental factors, learning processes, and beliefs about emotion and highlights how regulatory abilities and process-level dynamics interact within a feedback-sensitive system. Repeated failures in this system,

Emotion regulation: The role of hypnotizability and interoception.

Hypnotizability-related differences in interoception may be relevant to emotion regulation. The present study examined the relationships between hypnotizability, interoceptive sensibility (IS) and interoceptive accuracy (IA), and the use of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. One hundred and two healthy volunteers, assessed for hypnotizability, completed questionnaires assessing absorption, state anxiety, IS and emotion regulation. A portion of them (N = 62) participated in the heartbeat counting task, measuring IA. IS was positively associated with hypnotizability and cognitive

Birdsong and the Neural Regulation of Positive Emotion.

Birds are not commonly admired for emotional expression, and when they are, the focus is typically on negative states; yet vocal behavior is considered a direct reflection of an individual's emotional state. Given that over 4000 species of songbird produce learned, complex, context-specific vocalizations, we make the case that songbirds are conspicuously broadcasting distinct positive emotional states and that hearing songs can also induce positive states in other birds. Studies are reviewed that demonstrate that that the production of sexually motivated song reflects an emotional state of ant

Neural representation of emotion regulation goals.

The use of top-down cognitive control mechanisms to regulate emotional responses as circumstances change is critical for mental and physical health. Several theoretical models of emotion regulation have been postulated; it remains unclear, however, in which brain regions emotion regulation goals (e.g., the downregulation of fear) are represented. Here, we examined the neural mechanisms of regulating emotion using fMRI and identified brain regions representing reappraisal goals. Using a multimethodological analysis approach, combining standard activation-based and pattern-information analyses,

Regulation of emotions in psychogenic nonepileptic seizures.

BACKGROUND: Despite the long history of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES), relatively little is known about the mechanisms that cause and maintain this condition. Emerging research evidence suggests that patients with PNES might have difficulties in regulating their emotions. However, much remains to be learned about the nature of these difficulties and the emotional responses of individuals with PNES. This study aimed to gain a detailed understanding of emotion regulation processes in patients with PNES by examining differences between patients with PNES and a healthy control group wit

Mindfulness and emotion regulation--an fMRI study.

Mindfulness--an attentive non-judgmental focus on present experiences--is increasingly incorporated in psychotherapeutic treatments as a skill fostering emotion regulation. Neurobiological mechanisms of actively induced emotion regulation are associated with prefrontally mediated down-regulation of, for instance, the amygdala. We were interested in neurobiological correlates of a short mindfulness instruction during emotional arousal. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated effects of a short mindfulness intervention during the cued expectation and perception of negative a

Emotion regulation and psychopathology: the role of gender.

This review addresses three questions regarding the relationships among gender, emotion regulation, and psychopathology: (a) are there gender differences in emotion regulation strategies, (b) are emotion regulation strategies similarly related to psychopathology in men and women, and (c) do gender differences in emotion regulation strategies account for gender differences in psychopathology? Women report using most emotion regulation strategies more than men do, and emotion regulation strategies are similarly related to psychopathology in women and men. More rumination in women compared to men

Emotion recognition and regulation in anorexia nervosa.

It is recognized that emotional problems lie at the core of eating disorders (EDs) but scant attention has been paid to specific aspects such as emotional recognition, regulation and expression. This study aimed to investigate emotion recognition using the Reading the Mind in the Eyes (RME) task and emotion regulation using the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) in 20 women with anorexia nervosa (AN) and 20 female healthy controls (HCs). Women with AN had significantly lower scores on RME and reported significantly more difficulties with emotion regulation than HCs. There was a si

To Regulate or Not to Regulate? Situational and Individual Differences in Emotion Regulation Initiation in Daily Life.

Situational and individual differences shape how and why people regulate emotions, but whether emotion regulation is initiated remains understudied. We hypothesize that, for example, less familiar situations might be associated with more regulation initiation, and people who believe emotions are controllable initiate regulation more frequently. Using experience sampling (N = 216; 7x/14 days), we found that participants initiated regulation 60% of the time over the past 2 hr. As predicted, people initiated regulation in less familiar, less pleasant contexts, and with more dominant, less warm so

Negative emotional reactivity and regulation in 12-month-olds following emotional challenge: Contributions of maternal-infant emotional availability in a low-income sample.

We predicted that the quality of mother-infant play as measured by the second edition of the Emotional Availability Scales (EAS; Biringen, Robinson, & Emde, 1993) would be significantly associated with infant emotion regulation over and above infant emotional reactivity in response to an emotionally challenging event. Forty-five 12-month-old infants and their mothers participated in a play session and a protocol designed to elicit infant emotional reactivity and emotion regulation. Emotional reactivity (initial negative response to stress) was conceptualized as reflective of infant temperament

Assessing emotion regulation difficulties in adolescents: validation and clinical utility of the difficulties in emotion regulation scale, 16-item.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation difficulties have been identified as an underlying mechanism in the development and maintenance of psychopathology. The need to improve our understanding of emotion regulation difficulties to accurately assess and treat adolescents in child and adolescent psychiatric settings is essential. METHOD: In the first part of the study, the psychometric qualities of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, 16-item version (DERS-16) were examined in a clinical child and adolescent psychiatric (CAP) sample. In the second part, the DERS-16 was used to examine emotion
