Emotions as intrinsic colored noise in biological systems.

The idea that emotions in biological systems are analogous to intrinsic colored noise is advanced and justified. A model describing the dynamics of operation of biological networks under the influence of colored noise is suggested. The agents of a biological network can be represented either by biological species, such as humans and animals, or by neurons of the brain, or by the nodes of a neural network. Operational actions, or decisions, in a biological noisy network are based not only on the evaluation of utility of alternatives, but also on the agents emotions. The model is probabilistic, …

Hypospadias surgery: understanding parental emotions, decisions and regrets.

This paper builds an argument about genital surgery in the context of medical treatment of children and young people with variations in sex characteristics. First, I set out what is known from existing research including psychological research, surgical follow-up studies and parental regret studies. Second, I present an analysis of surgeons' talk about children, young people and parents in relation to genital surgery. This paper focuses most specifically on hypospadias surgery, but the argumentation is relevant for other kinds of genital surgery carried out in the context of genital variations

Attenuated Access to Emotions in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

The Seeking Proxies for Internal States (SPIS) model of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) posits that OCD is associated with attenuated access to internal states. Here we explored the implications of this model in the realm of emotions. Participants with OCD, anxiety disorders, and nonclinical control participants completed the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT), assessing two domains of emotional intelligence: Experiential emotional intelligence (EI), reflecting the ability to perceive and feel emotions accurately, and Strategic EI, reflecting the ability to understan…

Degenerative dementias: Alterations of emotions and mood disorders.

Degenerative dementias such as Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia result in distinct alterations in emotional processing, emotional experiences, and mood. The neuropathology of these dementias extends to structures involved in emotional processing, including the basolateral limbic network (orbitofrontal cortex, anterior temporal lobe, amygdala, and thalamus), the insula, and ventromedial frontal lobe. Depression is the most common emotion and mood disorder affecting patients with Alzheimer's disease. The onset of depression can be a prodromal sign of this dementia. Anxiety can als

Recognizing children's emotions in child abuse and neglect.

Past research has suggested that parents' ability to recognize their children's emotions is associated with an enhanced quality of parent-child interactions and appropriateness of parental caregiving behavior. Although this association has also been examined in abusive and neglectful parents, the results are mixed and do not adequately address child neglect. Based on the Social Information Processing model of child abuse and neglect, we examined the association between mothers' ability to recognize children's emotions and self- and professionals-reported child abuse and neglect. The ability to…

Activities suggestion based on emotions in AAL environments.

The elderly population is increasing and the response of the society was to provide them with services directed to them to cope with their needs. One of the oldest solutions is the retirement home, providing housing and permanent assistance for the elderly. Furthermore, most of the retirement homes are inhabited by multiple elderly people, thus creating a community of people who are somewhat related in age and medical issues. The ambient assisted living (AAL) area tries to solve some of the elderly issues by producing technological products, some of them dedicated to elderly homes. One of the

Gender and emotions: Icelandic parents experiencing childhood cancer.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate gender difference and the level of well-being among 26 Icelandic parents of children under 18 years with cancer and to compare mothers' and fathers' caregiving demands. Contrary to expectations, there was no overall significant difference between mothers' and fathers' well-being or their caregiving demands. On the other hand, the level of well-being was significantly different between the parents; 56% of the mothers showed clinically or problem-indicative stress, compared to 26.3% of the fathers. These findings emphasize the impact of cancer in children

Early environment, emotions, responses to stress, and health.

A harsh early family environment is related to mental and physical health in adulthood. An important question is why family environment in childhood is associated with these outcomes so long after its initial occurrence. We describe a program of research that evaluates a model linking these variables to each other. Specifically, we hypothesize that low social competence and negative emotional states may mediate relations between a harsh early family environment and physiological/neuroendocrine responses to stress, as well as long-term health outcomes. We report evidence that the model characte

Emotions, morbidity, and mortality: new perspectives from psychoneuroimmunology.

Negative emotions can intensify a variety of health threats. We provide a broad framework relating negative emotions to a range of diseases whose onset and course may be influenced by the immune system; inflammation has been linked to a spectrum of conditions associated with aging, including cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, Alzheimer's disease, frailty and functional decline, and periodontal disease. Production of proinflammatory cytokines that influence these and other conditions can be directly stimulated by negative emotions and stressful ex…

Prinzmetal's angina and emotions: A neglected psychosomatic entity.

Prinzmetal's angina, a form of angina precipitated by vasoconstriction or spasm, appears to be a somatic phenomenon, but there is evidence, from research and case reports, of a major psychological component. In this study, individuals with Prinzmetal's angina were interviewed to determine the nature of their interpersonal relationships and their intrapsychic state at the time of onset of their chest pain. In addition, short developmental histories were obtained. The authors found that onset of chest pain was related to experiencing intense affect, and multiple levels of interpersonal and intra

Quantifying the density of Friedman's pathogenic emotions (AIAI).

Because of both psychoneuroendocrine and psychobehavioral mechanisms, the chronicity of negative emotional arousal is probably the final common pathway mediating the relationship of psychosocial factors (cognitions, environments and behaviors) on one side of the mind-brain chasm, and ischemic heart disease (IHD) on the other. But the problem of "denial" remains a potential source of measurement error in studies of the association of such factors and IHD endpoints. The present study examined the association of patient-reported and spouse/friend-reported AIAI (aggravation, irritation, anger and

Working Through Your Emotions: Exercise Repairs the Experience of Positive and Negative Emotions Through Cognitive Emotion Regulation After a Recalled Stressor.

Exercise is suggested to help regulate emotions; however, its role in the underlying cognitive emotion regulation process-starting with a cue, cognitive actions to modify emotions, and desirable emotional changes-has not yet been demonstrated. This study therefore investigates whether (a) exercise up-regulates positive emotions and down-regulates negative emotions after recalling a stressor; (b) cognitive emotion regulation strategies mediate these effects; and (c) this process is more pronounced in emotionally intelligent (EI) individuals. University students (N = 134) recalled a stressor and…

I Will Listen to Your Emotions, But I Will Hide My Own: People's Different Strategies to Regulate Their Own Versus Others' Emotions.

We can regulate our own and other people's emotions, but it is not clear whether we use the same strategies to regulate others' emotions as we do to regulate our own. In three preregistered studies, we compared participants' preferences for eight different emotion regulation strategies as a function of target identity. Study 1 (N = 119) compared regulating oneself versus a friend and found that direct action, distraction, suppression, and downward comparison were all used significantly more on oneself compared to a friend, while humor, valuing, and receptive listening were all used more on a f…

Intracerebral stimulation inducing emotions in SEEG: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Direct intracerebral electrical stimulation during SEEG offers a unique opportunity to explore the neural correlates of human emotional experience, yet data on stimulation-induced emotions remain scattered and no systematic review has specifically addressed this topic. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review subjective emotional responses induced by SEEG stimulation and characterize their anatomical distribution, valence, hemispheric lateralization, and relationship with stimulation parameters. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect was cond…

Exploring reasons why people do not regulate their emotions.

Research to date focuses on how people regulate their emotions, but more commonly, people do not regulate. We built a bottom-up taxonomy of reasons for investigating why. In Study 1a (N = 250 U.K. community members; collected in 2023) people who did not regulate during a recent stressful event were asked to describe their reasons. We established a list of 14 reasons, and a new sample rated their agreement (Study 1b, N = 248, United Kingdom; 2023). Study 2 (N = 326, Australia; 2024) investigated reason frequency in everyday life using experience sampling. Our studies were conducted in English a…
