Expression of the beacon gene in endocrine glands of the rat.

Beacon gene has been recently identified in the rat hypothalamus, and reported to be overexpressed in obese animals. This pattern of expression suggests that beacon may be involved in the functional regulation of neuroendocrine axes. Hence, we have investigated the expression of beacon in the endocrine system of the rat. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction showed the expression of beacon mRNA in the hypothalamus, adenohypophysis, thyroid gland, adrenal gland, testis, ovary and pancreatic islets. Immunocytochemistry demonstrated the presence of the beacon immunoreactivity in all tis

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare, low-grade, cutaneous neoplasm that may be associated with invasive mucinous carcinoma. Tumors typically present as slow-growing, flesh-colored, nonspecific papules or nodules that favor the eyelids in older individuals. Histologic examination usually reveals basaloid nodules composed of cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm, with focal mucin production and occasional glandular structures. Definitive diagnosis requires immunohistochemical staining. Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinomas have been noted to stain positively

Hedgehog signaling: endocrine gland development and function.

The role of hedgehog signaling is analyzed in relation to the developing endocrine glands: pituitary, ovary, testis, adrenal cortex, pancreas, prostate, and epiphyseal growth. Experimental and pathological correlates of these organs are also discussed. The second section addresses a number of topics. First, the pituitary gland, no matter how hypoplastic, is present in most cases of human holoprosencephaly, unlike animals in which it is always said to be absent. The difference appears to be that animal mutations and teratogenic models involve both copies of the gene in question, whereas in huma…

[Adrenocorticotropic function of the pituitary gland in endocrine diseases].

In examination of 123 patients with diabetes mellitus. Itsenko-Cushing disease, Addison's disease, thyrotoxicosis and adiposity there was revealed an increase in the content of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in the blood. Comparison of the ACTH and cortizol concentration in the blood permitted to suppose a different mechanism of the derangements revealed. An increase of the adrenocorticotropic function of the hypophysis in diabetes mellitus, Itsenko-Cushing disease and thyrotoxicosis was accompanied by a rise in the blood cortizol level. A fall of glucocorticoid function of the adrenal

Endocrine control of the immunosuppressive activity of the submandibular gland.

Extracts of the submandibular gland (SMG) of rats contain fractions that stimulate the in vitro proliferation of Con A-treated lymphocytes. One of the stimulatory fractions was also shown to induce in vivo immunosuppression in rats and mice in several experimental models. Since many other biologically active factors of the SMG had been found to be hormone dependent, we investigated the effects on the immunosuppressive factor of hypophysectomy (Hx) and of hormonal reconstitution in male Fischer rats. Hx induced a marked atrophy of the SMG together with an almost complete disappearance of both t

Spontaneous lesions in endocrine glands of experimental Wistar rats and beagle dogs.

A retrospective analysis was undertaken at Zydus Research Centre to understand the incidences of spontaneous lesions in endocrine glands of Wistar rats and beagle dogs. The data from a total of 841 Wistar rats (418 males and 423 females) and 144 beagle dogs (72 males and 72 females) was used from placebo/vehicle treated control group of different non-clinical toxicity studies. The lesions in various endocrine glands were classified according to the species and age of the animals at termination of study. Among the endocrine glands, the highest numbers (types) of spontaneous lesions were observe…

Supernumerary parathyroid glands in hyperparathyroidism associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate frequency, anatomic presentation, and quantities of supernumerary parathyroids glands in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT1) associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1), as well as the importance of thymectomy, and the benefits of localizing examinations for those glands. METHODS: Forty-one patients with hyperparathyroidism associated with MEN1 who underwent parathyroidectomy between 1997 and 2007 were retrospectively studied. The location and number of supernumerary parathyroids were reviewed, as well as whether cervical ultrasound and parat

Oncocytic cardiomyopathy in an infant with oncocytosis in exocrine and endocrine glands.

An 11 week old female infant with congenitally malformed eyes died from intractable cardiac arrhythmia. The heart showed extensive oncocytic transformation of myocytes, and this distinctive cardiomyopathy affected the conduction system. Oncocytes were found also in endocrine (pituitary, thyroid) and exocrine (submandibular, sublingual, minor salivary) glands. There is morphologic evidence that the lesions were caused early in gestation, possibly by a viral infection such as rubella.

The Adrenal Gland and Pancreatic Islets - A Beneficial Endocrine Alliance.

Intraportal islet transplantation in patients with type 1 diabetes enables restoration of glucose-regulated insulin secretion. However, several factors hamper a widespread application and long-term success: chronic hypoxia, an inappropriate microenvironment and suppression of regenerative and proliferative potential by high local levels of immunosuppressive agents. Therefore, the identification of alternative and superior transplant sites is of major scientific and clinical interest. Here, we aim to evaluate the adrenal as an alternative transplantation site. The adrenal features a particular

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and the Adrenal Gland: From Toxicity to Endocrine Disruption.

Endocrine disruptors are exogenous compounds that pollute the environment and have effects similar to hormones when inside the body. One of the most widespread endocrine disruptors in the wild is the pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT). Toxic doses of DDT are known to cause cell atrophy and degeneration in the adrenal zona fasciculata and zona reticularis. Daily exposure in a developing organism to supposedly non-toxic doses of DDT have been found to impair the morphogenesis of both the cortex and the medulla of the adrenal glands, as well as disturbing the secretion of hormones in
